Roxy Ride Days: 3rd Canadian stop at Grouse Mountain, BC

The Roxy Ride Days cross Canada tour entered it’s third of four stops Saturday, March 16 at Grouse Mountain, in North Vancouver, to a third straight sold out crowd of female riders. Roxy Canada riders Joanie Robichaud and Marie-Andree Racine Gagnon and Roxy pro and backcountry boss, Robin Van Gyn, joined the Women’s Snowboard Federation coaches to inspire the participants. The weather was on the heavy side of “dewy” but neither the campers, the coaches nor the Roxy pros were phased and by the end of the day the sun won the struggle and the infamous Grouse city view showed itself. Vitamin D victory!

The welcome visibility upped the trick level for the afternoon game of R.O.X.Y. (based on the rules of H.O.R.S.E. or S.K.A.T.E.). The four riders that received the “fewest letters” were Evelien Langerwerf (Small Box), Vanessa Agonos (Intermediate Box), Tina Chiu (Intermediate Jump) and the super stylish Angelisa Edwards (Advanced Group). Special high fives go to Vanessa Agonos for high-fiving 20 girls, while jibbing, after her box victory.  The photo below does a better job explaining this.

Speaking of winners, there can only be one winner of a shiny new Roxy Ollie Pop snowboard. Drawing names out of a hat left two girls standing and the winner to be determined by a ‘crab race’ and ‘leg wrestle’. Robin Van Gyn played umpire and the room took on a hilarious snowboard-meets-cage-fighting vibe. A fun end to a memorable day at Grouse Mountain! Next camp is at Lake Louise, AB on March 30 followed by Mammoth Mountain, CA on April 6. For more information and to register, please visit RoxyRideDays.com.

Roxy Outdoor Fitness: How Gillian Gibree stays in Shape without the Dumbbells or Treadmill

When Gillian Gibree isn’t busy teaching stand up paddle yoga at her company Paddle Into Fitness in San Diego, CA, she can be found competing and placing in some of Stand Up Paddling’s most prestigious and high profile events around the world. Find out how she stays in shape for her demanding career without stepping foot in a gym.

Workout:

I love going on fitness adventures, so I start the day with a paddle session near my house in San Diego. This time, I even got a cool shot of some dolphins playing nearby! After a few sets of paddle sprints, I grab my sneakers and hit the trails to explore the canyons. The view from the top of Sunset Cliffs is amazing! Nothing like getting my sweat on while watching a beautiful California sunset!

Stand Up Paddle Yoga

The health benefits and simplicity of SUP and yoga make them the perfect match! Stand up paddle yoga keeps me in tune and in nature. Stand Up Paddle Boarding strengthens the core, tones every muscle, and gets me out on the water. Yoga improves flexibility and balance, while restoring all bodily systems by creating physical, mental, and spiritual harmony. SUP is the fastest growing sport in the world and SUP yoga is popping up everywhere! I’ll actually be training future SUP yoga teachers for their certification next month on a Mexico Retreat!

Gear:

Whether it’s support on my downhill trailrun, or flexibility during my SUP training session, the Perfectly Seamless Bra always has me covered!

Roxy Ride Days: The 2nd stop at Mont Avila, Quebec

The Roxy Ride Days cross Canada tour had its second stop this weekend at Mont Avila, near Montreal Quebec, to a sold out crowd of female riders. Upping the excitement were special guest coaches, including: Canadian Roxy rider Joanie Robichaud, recently appointed Transwold Snowboarding’s Rookie of The Year, Corinne Pasela, and legend Erin Comstock. The day began with girls showing off their skills in the pro and progression park where the light snowfall gave everything a pretty coating and cushy landing. The Mont Avila terrain park staff did an incredible job with the progression park and really allowed girls to push their comfort level.

As with every Roxy Ride Day, the camp ends with a game of R.O.X.Y. which is based on the rules of H.O.R.S.E. or S.K.A.T.E. A trick is called and if you cannot land the trick you receive a letter. The process repeats itself until the girl with the least letters is left standing and is crowned the winner. Taking top honors for the Jump was Gabby Kedzierski, Advanced Rail went to Veronique Laramée and Intermediate Rail to Emilie Fillion.
Congratulations to everyone who pushed themselves!

On the topic of prizes, a shiny new Roxy Ollie Pop Snowboard needed to be given away. With the ROXY Outdoor Fitness launching this Spring it seemed fitting to have a push-up battle for the coveted board prize. Several push-ups later there was a clear and muscular winner. Great job Chloe Vo! The next camp is at Grouse Mountain, BC on March 16 followed by Lake Louise, AB on March 30. Start practicing your push-ups and dance moves as you never know what the next snowboard challenge may be.

Sign up for upcoming camps here.

Maldives Uncovered with Stylist Tal Kohen

How did the trip to Maldives inspire your own personal wardrobe or styling for the shoot?
The designers at Roxy do such an amazing job bringing out the personalities of their surfers and customers in their clothes. The Maldives was the perfect location to compliment the Roxy Spring ’13 collection. The vivd colors and fun patterns in the pieces worked great with the culturally rich and bright, beautiful surroundings. To complete the look and achieve the ultimate Roxy girl vibe, I incorporated bold colored and organic jewelry.

Where do you get your best inspiration from as a stylist?
Besides movies, television, fashion books, and magazines, my strongest inspiration comes from the people who surround me in the places I call home: New York City and Los Angeles. NYC is home to some of the most unique, creative, and fashionable people, while LA’s relaxed warm weather breeds more comfortable, confident, and free-spirited people.

How long have you been styling and how did you get into it?
I’ve been styling professionally for about 7 years now, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve been styling my family and friends.
I was born and raised on the west coast, but I always knew I wanted to live in New York, the fashion capital. After graduating college, I decided to make the move. I got very lucky early on and was given the opportunity to assist a stylist on a commercial. She took a chance on me given that I had no real professional styling experience of my own. After that, I was hooked. Through contacts and acquaintances, I went on to style TV shows and photo shoots, and within a short time, went off on my own.

What was your most memorable moment while styling the surfers in the Maldives?
The Roxy girls are pure fun – there is never a dull moment. Some of my most memorable Maldives moments are watching Kelia [Moniz]and Kassia [Meador] surf wearing the saltwater chinos, Bruna [Schmitz] swaying a little boat back and forth almost tipping it over, and Monyca [Byrne-Wickey] and Sally [Fitzgibbons] dancing at the bow on our way to a remote sand island. Oh and of course the day all the girls decided to jump off the top level of our 4 story boat into the water. Sorry, there are just too many, I couldn’t give you just one moment…

Any tricks of the trade that every girl should know?
Besides investing in fashion staples such as jeans, the perfect T, the “go with everything” bag…the best and most important thing to wear is confidence. If you feel great, you look great.

If you weren’t styling…what would you dare to be doing?
I love food and I love traveling. If I wasn’t a stylist, I would absolutely love to be a traveling food critic!

Thanks to Tal Kohen for answering our ‘need-to-knows’ and to all the girls looking to get a little inspiration in their own lives, remember to dream big and #DAREYOURSELF everyday. See all of Tal’s top picks for Spring!

Roxy Ride Days 2013 kicks off at Blue Mountain in Ontario

The Roxy Ride Days kicked off in Blue Mountain, Ontario with a sold out event. The event was capped at 60 riders to ensure a comfortable coach-to-camper ratio. Demo boards were out, music was turned up and the Women’s Snowboard Federation (WSF) and Roxy team riders ensured everyone was progressing.

Roxy team rider Samm Denena was there to push the campers, and rounding out the day was a special guest appearance by Erin Comstock who recently celebrated 10 years with the Roxy team. Girls were lined up for half an hour to get an autograph, but what made Erin even more legendary is that she flew from the west coast on a red eye, drove right to the mountain and coached all day, then immediately flew to another snowboard trip. What a pro!

The day was also special day as it marked the 1 year anniversary of team rider Sarah Burke’s passing. Blue Mountain was her old stomping grounds (with Midland, the town where she grew up, not far away) it seemed most fitting that there would be such a large group of girls on snow, progressing, laughing and supporting each other #CelebrateSarah

Congratulations to Dayna Pinkey (Jump Jam Winner), Logan Sager, Bailey McDonald and Cali Sossia (Jib Jam, Small, Medium and Large Feature Winners).

For future Roxy Ride Days registration and dates, please click here. Next stop is at Mont Avila on February 23rd!

Kicking off the 2014 Winter Olympic ride

This past weekend kicked off the contest road to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia with the World Cup/Grand Prix at Copper Mountain, and Roxy girls came out with guns blazing, earning gold, silver and bronze medals in various events.
Torah Bright is back on top! With smooth big airs and stylish technical tricks Torah nabbed her first Gold medal halfpipe finish since her 2010 Olympic win.
Kjersti Buaas used her veteran know-how to navigate the slopestyle course in blustery conditions and took home the silver medal.

Our newest team members, skiers Dara Howell and Brita Sigourney both rode their way to the top of the podium. Dara’s massive spins earned her a 2nd place finish in the Women’s Skiing Slopestyle, while Brita’s skills in the pipe earned her a 3rd place finish in Women’s Skiing Halfpipe.

Congrats to all of the team, you continually inspire and impress us. Best of luck on the contest road ahead, we’ll be behind you all the way!
