Roxy Riders Train Together At Red Bull Girls Only Surf Camp – Lima, Peru

Top female surfers Sally Fitzgibbons (World #2) and Sofia Mulanovich (World #3) as well as 14 year old Roxy team rider Chelsea Tuach (Under 18 reigning National Champion and Caribbean Ladies’ Champion- Barbados) are in top shape after their strong efforts at Red Bull’s all girls training camp. The girls took part in five intensive training days (May 27 – June 1) with each surfer working on specific aspects of both technique and nutrition. The dedicated athletes also worked on aerials, continuing what they had learnt earlier in the year at Red Bull Project Air.

“I feel more confident with my surfing after working with coaches on some progressive maneuvers’, it’s been good preparation for my next WT event”- Sally Fitzgibbons

“I am extremely happy and excited about surfing with Sofia and Sally, two of my greatest idols”- Chelsea Tuach

A great cross of team work and motivation. As you can imagine the event resulted in quite the rewarding experience for the girls on so many levels!

Catching up with the ASP World Junior Champ Laura Enever

By: Jake Howard

When it comes to finding an angle to take, there are few better in sport than to cover a hometown kid making good on their talent. Enter Laura Enever. A North Narrabeen surf rat by heart, last week she won the ASP World Junior title in front of all the “Northy boys.” It was the second world title of young Laura’s career, which leads me to believe we should pay her some mind. Here’s what she has to say about it all:

You’re the ASP World Junior Champ, how does it feel?
I’m feeling pretty amazing right now! I don’t think it has fully sunk in yet. To win the World Junior Title at home, and to be able to share with all my family and friends has always been my dream. The whole of North Narrabeen was pretty much packed on the beach supporting me and cheering me. When I won it was just such a special moment, everyone was so happy and excited, I felt like I had won the world title not only for me, but for my home. It was the perfect day. It was the best day of my life.

What was the hardest thing about winning the title?
In my first heat of the contest I got off to a really nervous start, and kind of freaked myself out. It was such a big lead up to the event and I just wanted to surf really well in front of everyone at home and do really good, but it backfired. I just got really nervous. After that heat I just told myself I wanted to have fun, not worry and just enjoy surfing my home break. Everything just went my way from there.

How did you celebrate your win?
Well, all the Northy boys had already started “celebrating” before my final even got underway. Then after I won everyone took me straight up to North Narrabeen Surf Club and we partied on. Quiksilver put a whole lot of money on the bar, so everyone was having the best time. All the Northy boys got me up on a table and sung me the North Narrabeen song and made me skull from the world title cup. I think they were proud of me.

There aren’t very many surfers that can say they’ve won both the ASP and the ISA world titles, what does that mean to you?
It is pretty cool. I guess world titles are something you can never take away from someone, so it’s pretty special. One day I would love to win the ASP World Title but for now I’m stoked on my junior world titles, and just want to take it all in and enjoy it.

What’s next on your schedule?
I’m heading up to the Gold Coast for the Roxy Pro trials, as well as the ASP Banquet, which I’m really excited about. I actually really wanted to win World Juniors so I could get invited to the banquet and go shopping and get dressed up with everyone. I’m so looking forward to it. Other than I’m going to just keep doing the Australiasion Pro Junior events this year, as well as the WQS contests. But I don’t really have any plans, I just want to go with the flow, have fun, surf some really good waves, and keep experiencing everything along the way. I’m really excited for the rest of the year.

A Day in the Life of Shauna!

A Day in the Life of…

SUPER Shauna:
RETAIL AND MARKETING MANAGER FOR ROXY AND QUIK

Job Title/Description of what you do:
Retail Marketing Manager – Roxy & Quiksilver

I do retail marketing for Roxy and Quiksilver which basically means I work very closely with the shops that buy Roxy and Quik product and sell it to consumers like you! It starts with the overall campaigns. I work with the VP’s of marketing from both brands to take their seasonal campaign messages and bring them in-store. That means bringing them to life in terms of windows, in-store visuals such as lightboxes, artwork, etc. Any of the pretty images you see in store that represent the Roxy and Quiksilver brand. There is a whole strategy behind that.

The campaigns continue into events and promotions at the store level. We create consumer based events to both support the store and promote the brands and the current campaign message. Right now I am working on more summer based promotions around the Roxy ‘Hello Summer’ campaign. Swimwear is a key component of that as well as the overall summer collection (which is amazing btw!). You’ll see the four campaign messages through all the retail channels I work though – Stand by Your Tan, Eat Your Heart Out, Wear Your Heart on Your Sleeve, and Show Your Stripes. Overall my mission is to connect the campaign dots in a retail environment and make sure the brand integrity is intact and consistent in all markets.

Time worked at ROXY:
It will be 6 years in June! Half a dozen, baby! Boy, am I getting old! I started in ’04 right out of college.

Defining Moment at ROXY:
Hm… I feel pretty cool most of the time :) I have to say when I began my career at Roxy I did a lot of grunt work. I still do (that’s the little well kept secret of marketing – you schlep around a lot of the time!) but it’s all part of the fun! I used to plan a lot of events for Roxy. One of which was an Editor Surf Camp. We’d invite some key editors from the magazines we run ads in and invite them to escape for a Roxy weekend! We’d take them to Montauk, NY to experience the Roxy surf lifestyle! Yes, the surfing, partying, dancing, etc. was all a blast but I think my defining moment was driving back to the JFK airport in our rental car. We had to split at about 5am to make our flight. In my car were Lisa Andersen and Jen Smith. Jen Smith would become the 2009 women’s longboard world champion, and Lisa Andersen is a surf icon. I thought to myself while driving down the Long Island Expressway, “How freaking cool is this? I’m chatting it up with Lisa Andersen who is riding shotgun and Jen Smith is passed out in the backseat.” You can’t beat that…

Fav Part of Working for ROXY:
Probably that I don’t wear shoes a good part of the day. I’m sure people would rather that I did but I don’t get any weird looks. Also that I can sing at my desk. I like to sing what I’m thinking like ‘I am tired and hungry and would like to eat a burrito for lunch today!!  La la la la la!”  You are encouraged to be yourself here and practice what you preach. We are a brand all about being fun, spontaneous, natural and full of spirit. We don’t say one thing but do another. No one wears suit – if they did they would stick out like a sore thumb. You are encouraged to get out and get in the water when you can. That’s where you get your inspiration and your motivation to keep going! Roxy truly is a lifestyle even at work. I’ve also just recently got approval to put a giant trampoline in our warehouse where we have a skate park. Yes, there are a few girls that do skate but the majority is boys. Us ladies need a place to blow off some steam too! I’d say that is a pretty sweet part of Roxy – you can request trampolines for stress maintenance sessions!

Style Icon/Style Inspiration:
Three letters: M-K & A. Love them! I want to be them. They can pull off any look – glam, derelict, whatever. They are amazing. My cube mates here know I’m obsessed with them. My little sister actually looks like them a bit too. I think she’s actually even more obsessed – but she can pull it off because she has great style and is teeny-tiny herself. I also love Rachel Bilson – another one that just gets it. She can make anything look amazing. Very simple and clean yet right on point.

Shauna as Rachel Zoe for Halloween 2009

Go-To Fashion Item or Outfit right now:
I’m definitely a fan of the ‘hippy-chic’ look. I mix it with a little bit of prep which becomes of hybrid of hippy-preppy-chic. I can’t quite explain how that works but somehow it does. I’ve always loved anything big and roomy. I like to tell people that I invented jeggings. I also think I invented jeans tucked into boots but I have yet to see the royalty checks role in… hm. But basically my go-to look is skinny bottom, big top. I have skinny chicken legs and big hair so I like to rock that look a lot.

Advice to Readers:
Internships!! Probably the best thing you can do for yourself. Try a few careers on for size and see what you really like before you go full force with it. You may surprise yourself. Ask a lot of questions and really job shadow someone. A lot of times people want to go for a career because they like the idea of it. But find out it is not what they expected at all. An internship can help you figure this out.
I would also suggest going on an adventure after college. Take a little time off before starting your career. It’s pretty much the last time you can just take off for 3 months without worrying too much. You get so much life experience out of those trips and they are very necessary.

Thanks Shauna! Check back next month for another ROXY superstar!

Sponsor Village at the Chicken Jam

If  you wanted to give your legs a little rest from being up at the mountains all day, we’d say the Sponsor Village was a good way to go.

Sponsors set up tents filled with all kinds of fun surprises. Cover Girl provided make-overs, Paul Mitchell let you test their favorite products, and our friends at DC had a green screen photo-booth. Other sponsors included Rockstar, High Cascade, Zumies, FuelTV, Lib Tech/GNU, DC, Quiksilver. Each of our sponsors provided games and prizes, raffles, and our favorite freebies! We had our own booth where we demo’d new ROXY boards including boards with the new C2BTX  technology.

Fun at the Sponsors Village
