Featured Artist: Blusom

Album: The Fundamental Drift
Featured Track: “American Walkabout”
Myspace: /blusom
Facebook: /blusom
Label: Second Nature Recordings

Nearly a decade ago, Denver rock veterans Jme White and Mike Behrenhausen created a number of home-recorded experimental tracks that eventually found their way to Second Nature Recordings. The Kansas City label not only released the duo’s debut album, 2003’s Go Slowly All the Way Round the Outside, but its 2005 follow-up, The Metapolitan, as well. Working as Blusom, White and Behrenhausen craft melodic electronic music padded with layers of acoustic instrumentation; White lays down each track’s bedrock with beats, keyboards and whatever else he may find laying around, while vocalist Behrenhausen contributes lyrics to the mix. Rather than devolve into a predictable clash of digital-versus-organic, Blusom’s songs stand apart as a seamless blend of these two seemingly disparate elements. Get a taste of the duo’s “American Walkabout” in our recent Roxy Europe tour video!

Kassia Meador Re-signs With Roxy!

We’re happy to share these awesome news…straight from the wire:

KASSIA MEADOR RE-SIGNS WITH ROXY AS AMBASSADOR AND DESIGNER

Encinitas, California (June 15, 2011) – Pro surfer, photographer and artist, Kassia Meador, renews her partnership with Roxy, adding the title of designer to her list of talents. The 28-year-old California girl has been an integral part of both women’s surfing and the Roxy brand’s growth since she was 17-years-old. Kassia will now be both a Roxy ambassador to women’s surfing, while also officially lending her k*meador designs to their wetsuits and streetwear collection.

“After all the years together, Roxy’s been like family and such a big part of my life,” says Meador. “Roxy has opened up so many experiences and opportunities to me and women’s surfing and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with their designers; keeping the good vibes going by sharing our designs with their audience.”

Whether traveling the globe with the Roxy Team or taking part in executive roundtables, Kassia’s been deeply involved with nearly every aspect of the Brand. The silhouette of Kass’ frame gracefully maneuvering through peeling waves is iconic after over a decade of magazine covers, films, and advertising campaigns. Roxy launched the k*meador signature wetsuit and lifestyle collections in 2010. The new partnership will allow these lines to grow in the coming years.

“We are so stoked to re-sign Kassia to Roxy. She has long been a part of the Roxy family and we’ve watched her evolve from a phenomenal surfer to an inspirational artist and photographer. She is our muse and the epitome of a surfer girl. Her artistic talents and designs have made their way into our products and creative campaigns. We are proud to continue to support her k*meador wetsuit collections and look forward to expanding her design talents into other categories,” stated Danielle Beck, Vice President of Marketing for Roxy.

Kassia represents Roxy on the surf front in contests and filming for projects including Sight|Sound, Transfer Textures, Dear and Yonder and the Present.

Kassia travels next to France for the Women’s ASP Longboard World Tour stop, the Roxy Jam at the Cotes des Basques, Biarritz, France, being held from July 11 – 17.

Roxy Guest Blogger: Danielle

School’s almost out and the summer party season has officially started! From prom after-parties to spontaneous get-togethers, chilling with friends has never been better!Although my own prom was last year, I’ve had the good fortune of being invited to a friend’s prom this year, convincing me to go out and buy another dress! I decided to play around with my look this time around, and chose to heavily accessorize my already-playful dress. Now, for the party looks…

The great thing about summer parties is that they give you a great opportunity to play around with accessories! During the warm weather, it’s always nice to keep your clothing light and simple, so accessories are the best way to make a statement. Roxy’s Savage Dress is a great option and is available in tons of cute colors (I personally love my old Running Round Dress, which is still available on clearance)! A cute tank, like the Off Shore Tank, paired with shorts or jeans is another great way to stay cool. Now for the accessories- personally, I’m in love with the gorgeous Faceted Curff Watch, which could easily be paired with any outfit. Fun necklaces and bracelets are also great go-to pieces. Another thing to consider when dressing for parties is footwear. While towering heels are always gorgeous, they’re not the most practical. That’s why I like to opt for pretty flats, like the Giselle Flats, which are just as cute, but ten times more comfy!!

TTFN, Roxy girls!!

Sweepstakes Winners surf with Kelia at Waikiki!

This past weekend (June 10-12, 2011) Roxy hosted the winners of the “Surf with Kelia” Sweepstakes at the Sheraton Waikiki! The sweepstakes winners, Tara Falk and her mother Jodi Boulier got to enjoy a two day get away with Roxy Surf team-rider Kelia Moniz. Tara 21, a recent college graduate and her mom were excited to celebrate her graduation with a weekend away soaking up the sun and riding the waves in Hawaii! Tara and Jodi are from the outskirts of Seattle, Washington.  You can see why they would be so stoked to be in Waikiki. With their busy lifestyles the beach is a luxury they don’t often get to enjoy.  Though the weather started out to be a bit rainy, it quickly cleared up, providing them with sunny skies and awesome surf conditions.  It was Tara’s first time ever being on a board. Luckily, Roxy team rider Kelia Moniz was there to show her the ropes. Jodi even decided to give stand-up paddling a go for the first time! Many fun moments were shared last weekend, a highlight being dinner at Dukes where stories were told and everybody learned so much about life in Washington for Tara and Jodi.

The Season for Surf

It’s truly time to suit up for surf, especially when the wetsuits scream cool as much as the Cynthia Rowley x Roxy collaboration and Kassia Meador x Roxy wetsuit designs do.

Truly love at first sight- Kassia Meador’s signature line of Roxy wetsuits is absolute genius. As a professional longboarder and Roxy team rider Kassia Meador is no stranger to the way of the waves, but what makes her even more unique is her eye for design. Kassia is the ultimate artist- exploring her talents in photography, with exhibits happening all over the world. She’s the perfect surfer-girl muse and  gal to design a line of wetsuits! The technology inherent in each wetsuit proves to be both functional and practical, but that’s only the start. The eye-catching “XO” motif in the Kassia Meador Long John is fun, flirty and leaves you with lots to Love!  We’re also loving the amazing Kassia Meador Cypher suit and the Wetsuit Vest. The color blocking and use of cool geometric patterns in gray, black, and white is classic with a dramatic and exciting twist.

Cynthia Rowley for Roxy wetsuits is where high fashion meets surf culture- with an affordable price tag of course! With its mix of spring neoprene, bright colors, and credible technology, each wetsuit instantly sweeps you off into a distant 1960s retro culture. No one can deny the beauty in the cut and color of the Cynthia Rowley 2M Wetsuit- Its fresh combination of pastel colors come alive, especially against a bronzed beach landscape.  The design elements get more fun with the likes of the clever, paisley printed, and to die for, criscross back in the 2M Short John or the frisky juxtaposition of neon pink stitching against and electric blue suit like the 2M SpringSuit. I imagine looking fashionable wearing these in any body of water or at  a beach party!

Download of the Week: Gold Leaves “The Ornament”

Available 6/15 – 6/22: Gold Leaves “The Ornament”

Gold Leaves is the brand new project of Grant Olsen, who you might know as the Arthur side of Seattle folk duo Arthur & Yu. Work on his debut solo album, The Ornament, actually started four years ago, but when his laptop and lyric notebook were stolen, Grant decided it was a sign to shift his musical direction and start over. He got married, traveled the world, and wrote a whole new album that includes such disparate styles as country, doo-wop and ’60s brit-pop. It’s a thoughtful, inspired record with unique touches and a personal spirit — one of those albums that helps us get our day started on the right foot. Check out the title track here and see if it works for you.

Torah Bright: Gardening

I’ve been on a home improvement kick for the last few weeks, spending all of my time in the garden weeding, planting and weeding some more. I’m amazed at how much work it can be to maintain a few flowers and some trees, the weeds are seriously out of control.  But it’s nice to get outside and work in the dirt planting and designing our green space while also getting my tan on after a winter spent in the snow. Here are a few photos of the fruits of our labor and now that things are tidied up at home we’re off to Lake Powell for a few days of fun in a houseboat!

tulips sans weeds!

Cheers, Torah

We love the no-nonsense rock of Nashville’s Daniel Ellsworth & The Great Lakes, whose Civilized Man album features a mix of classic Americana instrumentation (guitar, piano, drums, bass) in the vein of folks like Neil Young, early Elton John, The Band and Wilco. You can hear Daniel’s “Electric In Love” in our recent Roxy Europe Surf Tour video.
