A Bajan Christmas

This holiday season, I checked in with Roxy Team Rider Chelsea Tuach at her beautiful hometown on the island of Barbados.

Chelsea is dominating not only the Caribbean, but this last year she finished 9th at the World Games in Peru. I found out why, after surfing with her and watching her shred this Christmas.

Chelsea took me around the island and taught me a few tricks of the trade I believe I need to share…

Congratulations to Roxy Team Rider Tatiana Weston-Webb – Winner of the 2011 Rip Curl Grom Search North America Finals

Yesterday, Roxy Team Riders Chelsea Tuach from Barbados, Nikki Viesins from Florida, and Tatiana Weston-Webb from Hawaii met in the cold, shark-infested waters of Ocean Beach, San Francisco to compete for the prize at the 2011 Rip Curl Grom Search National Finals.

The waves were 3-4 feet and choppy, but the girls made the most of the mediocre conditions in the morning, all advancing through round one into the semifinals.

During the semi final heats, Nikki Veisins struggled to find a high score that would put her in the advancing position. Chelsea was advancing in second place, right up to the last minute, but was nipped by a .10 by Hawaiian surfer Mahina Maeda. Still, she finished with an impressive 5th place overall.  Tatiana Weston-Webb took a first place in the semifinal, and surfed strong into the final heats.

In the final round, Tatiana and her fellow Hawaiian locals were in it for the $500 win and a chance to surf in the international finals at Bells Beach in Australia.

Tatiana opened up the heat with a solid 7.10 for her first high score, starting the heat strong. Mahina Maeda answered back with a 6.50, but Tatiana bettered her first score by showcasing her power turns and vertical snaps, earning a 6.43.

In the last five minutes, Tatiana surfed to her potential and scored an astonishing 9.50, almost a perfect ten! She had everyone combed after her impressive display of huge, power hacks and combination of maneuvers.  Tatiana took home the $500 prize, and a chance to surf in the Rip Curl Grom Search International Finals in Bells Beach, Australia.

Congratulations Tatiana! Watch the highlights from the contest HERE.

Roxy Team Rider Kelia Moniz Takes 2nd at the Swatch Girls Pro in China!

Yesterday Kelia “Sis” Moniz showcased her undeniable talent at the unique Swatch Girls Pro in China, the last of the 2011 ASP Women’s Longboard Tour events.

Eighteen- year old “Sis” from the South Shore of Oahu surfed with power and grace, overtaking every heat from round one. In the final, she battled it out against Chelsea Williams from Australia in the shoulder to head high waves of Riyuewan Beach.

Williams opened the heat with a solid 6.83, but Moniz answered back with a 5.83, and followed up with a 5.0. Soon after, she backed those scores up with a 6.53, but Williams took the lead with her final wave, an 8.50 at the end of the heat. Kelia finished with an impressive 12.36 overall.

Another honorable mention, Kassia Meador never fails to entertain with her renowned style and technique. Kassi took third overall and 2nd in the world. Roxy Team Rider Jennifer Smith finished the year with third in the world. Congrats to the entire Roxy Surf Team for all their hardwork and accomplishments!

Come celebrate with us!

There are events across the globe (not limited to JUST beaches, check out the events in the midwest!) on the USA West Coast, USA Midwest, USA Islands, USA Gulfcoast, USA Great Lakes, USA East Coast, and International locales.

The goal:

take the day, or at least part of the day, to go out, catch a wave or three and — while you’re at it — help clean up your favorite beach. In conjunction with the Surfrider Foundation, we’ll be organizing a handful of offical beach cleanups, but that doesn’t stop you from beautifying your own stretch of sand

from International Surfing Day

Roxy is joining in the fun at Bolsa Chica State Beach
