Roxy Outdoor Fitness: Prep your body for your next outdoor adventure

Yoga outdoors with Amy Murphree #ROXYOutdoorFitness

As fitness and adventure fiends, Roxy girls continue to push boundaries and exceed limits. But it’s important to find a balance, listen to our bodies, and honor it without pushing it over the edge. Whether it’s trailblazing through the woods or taking on beach bootcamps, our muscles experience a tremendous amount of pounding, shortening, and tightening. When we do not restore, elongate, and stretch these muscles, imbalances and injuries occur. Yoga is a powerful tool that will not only help us develop better body awareness and balance, but it’s the best way to prevent muscle overuse and injury.

Yoga outdoors with Amy Murphree #ROXYOutdoorFitness

Roxy professional surfer and athlete Amy Murphree has had scoliosis most of her life, which has challenged her throughout her surfing and training career. Her tools for surfing success and injury prevention include yoga and stretching on a daily basis.

Checkout Amy’s Roxy Outdoor Fitness tips for yoga success:

Just breathe.

Breathing is one of the most important parts of yoga. Remember to consciously breathe into your muscles as you stretch into each pose. Try the four-count breathing- four counts breathe in, hold for four counts, four counts breathe out. Feel your belly rise and fill your lungs at the same time for a deeper breath. If you can, set aside 30 minutes a day to be calm, find your center and clear your mind.

Anyone can do it.

Yoga isn’t a chore as some people think. You don’t have to be Gumby to get a good stretch in. Downward dog is an easy pose that is great for lengthening your hamstrings and extending your vertebrae. Simply plant your hands on the ground while pressing your hips high and yearning your heels for the mat.

You can add lifting one leg high up behind you keeping your hips squared to the mat for three-legged dog. Breathe in to lift, and out to lengthen while releasing your shoulders down from your ears. This will deepen the stretch and sets you up to move into half pigeon or runners lunge, which are great hip-openers.

Once you start making yoga or even just a few quick stretches a habitual part of your day you will notice an increasingly heightened state of awareness as well as a nice reward for all the hard work you put into your outdoor workouts.

Not only does my practice elongate my muscles and strengthen my core, but I also find inspiration and peace, which puts a positive spin on my day. Practicing in great gear makes it even better. Roxy’s new Outdoor Fitness line allows us as athletes to have the best equipment available to perform in with style and ease.

Golden Girl Torah Bright takes to the waves of California & stops by Roxy headquarters

T_1

Olympic Gold Medalist and team rider Torah Bright took a break from the snow and came west to California for a little R&R and a quick drop and shop at Roxy headquarters. Sunshine, bikinis, beach, and lots of laughs soon ensued; Just what the doctor recommended after a recent injury leaving Torah holding off on hitting the pipe just yet!

Summer ROXY Styles!

Torah was in great spirits getting bright bikinis for her weekend in Santa Monica and surf date with Bruna Schmitz. Her personal picks and most recent wear was the Bronzed Melody U Bandeau cleverly paired with the bright Radiate Love Scooter Bikini bottoms.

Torah Bright goes to California!

Her creative pairing might even inspire you to Mix and Match and Make Your Own! What do you think?

Torah Bright goes surfing with Bruna Schmitz and fellow snow team rider Aimee Fuller!

After snagging a pair Carnival Shorts, the Golden Maze Dress, and bikinis galore it was back to business, which for Torah includes a full review of her upcoming Roxy Bright Edition collection (expect a bit of GOLD per usual!!!).

You could sense the accomplishment she felt when seeing the collection as she announced, “…it’s spot on. Exactly what I wanted”. Torah’s new collection will be going with her to the Olympics in Sochi, Russia next February as she defends her Olympic gold medal, but for now, we’re heading straight for the sunshine and beach – golden girl Torah Bright included.

Tic Tac Toes #ROXYsandals DIY

Tic Tac Toe(s) #ROXYsandalsPlaying games on the beach between surf breaks and surf snacks is one of our favorite things to do in the summertime. We decided to start DIY’ing and came up with ‘Tic Tac Toes(s) in the sand #ROXYsandals’ and put our creativity to good use!

This DIY is super easy and well worth the 20 minutes it takes to make! All you need is a remnant piece of fabric (about the size of a pillow case or an old shirt), masking tape, paint, a straight edge, pencil, and some game pieces. We used some starfish and seashells in place of our X’s and O’s.

Roxy Outdoor Fitness: Take the Long Road

As the days draw out and get warmer, why not take the long road to the beach? Roxy ambassador and blogger Devon DeMint of ‘The Mermaid Chronicles” looks for diverse trails to bike because the various terrains help work a variety of muscles. Plus, surf spots and beaches that require an effort to get to are usually less crowded and lead to more quality time with Mother Nature.

Here’s how to prepare for taking the road less traveled:

1.    Wear layers.  I Always include a quick dry bikini, form fitting pants that won’t get caught in my bike chain, a tank top like the Perfectly Seamless Tank with built in ventilation, flexible boardshorts and a top with long sleeves just in case.

2.    Pack smart. Bring only what you think you’ll need and distribute the weight of these items evenly to balance out the load. Bring a wet bag to carry your sea-soaked suit after you get out of the ocean.

3.    Plan ahead. Know what to expect before you get there. Of course, Mother Nature likes to keep us on our toes us, but checking surf and weather forecasts before you go will help you know what you’re in for.

4.   Be resourceful and utilize the environment around you. Driftwood found on the beach makes for a great shelter or changing room!

5.    Don’t forget food, water and sunscreen! When I’m packing a snack, I love to bring something light and high in vitamins like kale chips.

Here’s a basic recipe you might want to try:

Kale Chips

Serves: 2

  • 1 bunch of kale, washed and dried well
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • A few pinches of Himalayan sea salt
  • Preheat oven to 300º F.
  • Tear large pieces of Kale off the center rib. Place the leaves in a bowl, drizzle with olive oil and toss until coated.
  • Place the kale on 2 baking sheets. Arrange it in a single layer and sprinkle with sea salt.
  • Place in the oven and bake for 25 minutes, or until crisp. Place in a container you can easily seal and transport in your pack. Enjoy!

Office Spy: Meet Senior Graphic Designer for Ecomm Becca K.

Roxy Office Spy! Becca K.

Meet Becca K., Roxy’s in house Graphic Designer and  Roxy’s ‘unofficial’ historian with a collection of vintage hangtags, magazine clippings and other Roxy memorabilia that had all of us Roxy girls taking a trip down memory lane.

Have you ever been curious about what a Graphic Designer’s workspace looks like? Have a look at Becca’s workspace and see what inspires her!

1. ROXY: Tell us about your job and how your work ends up on Roxy.com

Becca:  I’m the Senior Graphic Designer for Roxy E-commerce, so it’s my job to take the marketing campaigns and bring them to life on Roxy.com! I work closely with marketing to become familiar with the story we want to tell, and then work with the web team to create wireframes for the site, the merchandisers to make sure we are showing the correct products, and the developers to make sure the designs are pixel perfect when they transition from being in my hands to being up on the site.

2. ROXY: What’s this?

Becca: When I was 14 I wrote a letter to Roxy telling them what a big fan I was and asked them to send me some stickers. They actually wrote back and sent me some stickers that came in this amazing envelope that I’ve saved for almost 14 years! When I’m having a bad day at work I look at this to keep myself inspired and remind myself about my passion for this brand.

3.  ROXY: How long have you been collecting? What is your favorite?

Becca: I started saving anything with the Roxy logo on it since I was about 12, when I bought my first Roxy piece (I think it was a t-shirt) and I fell in love with the hang tag. I’ve saved every hang tag from every Roxy item I’ve ever bought, along with ads from magazines, posters, stickers, etc. I recently met a fellow designer and Roxy fan online – she followed my personal blog and learned about my love for vintage Roxy and sent me a bunch of amazing ads, books and posters for my collection, all the way from France! It was a great addition to my Roxy archives – thanks Julie!

4.  ROXY: Any cool projects that you’re working on that you can share with us?

Becca: Even though I’m a web designer, one of my favorite parts of my job is when I get to work in the photo studio to create assets for a product trend story like the Mix & Make your own bikini tool!

5. Becca: I love to draw so I try to incorporate my illustrations whenever possible, like the Spring Break promo where I sketched activities to do at each destination, or the holiday and Valentine ’s Day card you might have seen here on the blog!

6. Becca’s desk space

7. Desk essentials—gold & pink seashells!
