Stephanie Gilmore Joins Team Average!

It’s finally here!  ROXY has the exclusive Monster Children x Team Average surf film, which features World Champion surfer and ROXY team rider Stephanie Gilmore and Quiksilver team rider Craig Anderson.

The crew at Monster Children piled Stephanie, Craig, Dion Agius, Dylan Rieder and Andrew Allen into a bus and spent two weeks traveling around Sri Lanka searching for surf and skate as part of the Team Average series, which centers around adventure, friendship, and ultimately, getting lost.

Behind the Scenes at the 2014 US Open of Surfing

Last week we took a break from the office to watch ROXY Team riders Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Bianca Buitendag compete in the 2014 US Open of Surfing right in our backyard in Huntington Beach, CA!

Between autograph signings, team dinners & daily treks down to Main Street to catch all the live action on the beach…our team definitely kept busy throughout the week!

Both Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore won their heats in the Quarterfinals on Saturday, despite really tough conditions and a dropping swell.  The two Roxy team riders went head to head in the semi-finals on Sunday, with Steph beating Sally with a 16.10 to advance to the finals.  Steph scored an impressive 9.93 – a nearly perfect wave!

In the finals, Steph competed against fellow Australian Tyler Wright.  Steph started strong but it was Tyler’s 8 wave that allowed her to take the lead and turn the heat around.  Steph finished 2nd to Tyler in a really close final.

Sally is now ranked 2nd in the world and Steph is 4th as they head into the next WCT stop at Trestles in San Clemente, CA from September 9-20.

Didn’t get to catch any of the action at the US Open this year? Here are some of our favorite behind the scenes photos captured by ROXY’s social media team!

Loving Lost in Bali: Mt. Agung Sunrise Trekking Part 1

Mt. Agung, Bali

Welcome to Mt. Agung, the tallest and holiest mountain on the island of Bali at 9,944 feet above sea level! Famous for it’s picturesque sunrise vantage points and breathtaking panoramic views across the entire island of Bali, we couldn’t help but sign up for the full moon mountain hike to see for ourselves.

Bamboo Indah, Bali

To prepare ourselves for the challenging day ahead, we took the afternoon to physically and mentally prepare with an afternoon yoga session in the Minang house at Bamboo Indah. Overlooking Ubud’s rice terraces, this was the perfect place to mentally prepare for the exciting journey ahead.

Rosy Hodge, Kelia Moniz, Lee-Ann Curren and Bruna Schmitz enjoyed a private lesson from a local yogi, complemented with a stunning visual of bright green leaves and the soft sounds of chirping birds in the background.

On June 20th, The Conditions will be Perfect on Every Beach

That’s because today, June 20th, is International Surfing Day, and Roxy is supporting the Surfrider Foundation to spread the word and share the stoke.

Which means we’re asking surfers and non-surfers alike to head to their favorite beach to surf, participate in beach clean up, or just hang out and enjoy the weather.

And to sweeten the deal, Roxy is donating $10 from every boardshort and swim piece sold today to our selected charity, Kind Surf.* Because good karma swells. And the oceans belong to everyone.

Kind Surf is an international non-profit organization that helps disadvantaged kids through the practice of surfing and environmental education. Kind Surf, Quiksilver and Roxy will be hosting a beach day today for disadvantaged kids in Valencia, Spain at Port Saplaya beach who would otherwise not have an opportunity to enjoy International Surfing Day.

Our Bali Big Eco Weekend event kicks off today as well, which will include beach cleanup efforts, a sea turtle release and the Uluwatu Challenge.

Surfrider Foundation is hosting over 150 events across the globe to enable every person to give back to their local beach or favorite surf break. Find an International Surfing Day event near you.

Sally Fitzgibbons Fiji Pro

She’s done it again! Sally Fitzgibbons gets her second consecutive tour victory in winning the Fiji Pro!

The waves at Cloudbreak might have been the best surfing conditions the women have ever seen during competition, where 8-10-foot waves set the stage for some incredible surfing.

After nailing one of the best barrels in the semifinals scoring a near perfect 9.07, Sally advanced to the finals to join fellow ROXY surfer Stephanie.

It was a tight final against Stephanie, surfing in challenging conditions at Cloudbreak. Ultimately, Sally’s 9.0 score in the finals beat Stephanie’s score of 8.73.

“Winning at Cloudbreak is such an awesome feeling”, she said. “You get smashed across the reef but you have to pick yourself up and get going again.”

Meet Bianca Buitendag: ROXY Team Rider, Rookie of the Year & ASP World Tour Surfer

Meet Bianca Buitendag. ROXY Team Rider, Rookie of the Year & ASP World Tour Surfer. The 20 year old South African native is one of the newest faces on the ASP Women’s World Tour—and aside from being a fierce world tour competitor in the water, she’s a total sweetheart! We caught up with Bianca before her next stop in Rio to talk surf snacks, wetsuit tricks & pre-surf playlists!

ROXY: What is your favorite breakfast to eat before a surf?

BIANCA: A local South African porridge. I just can’t get enough of it!

Bianca Buitendag

ROXY: How do you keep your skin/hair healthy with so much exposure to sun and salt?

BIANCA: I overload on sunblock, mostly cream with a zinc base. I have a fair skin with a lot of freckles so protection is important. For my hair I use  high quality hair products and rinse and wash after every long day in the salt and sun.

Bianca Buitendag

Bianca Buitendag

ROXY: Any tricks for easily getting in/out of a wetsuit?

BIANCA: It gets better with repetition! The quality and stretch of the wetsuit material helps the most.

ROXY: If we were to take a peek at your iPhone/iPod, what songs would be on your playlist?

BIANCA: Artists like Ben Howard, Tom Odell, Beirut, Bon Iver and some golden oldies.

ROXY: What’s it like being on the ASP Women’s World Tour?

BIANCA: It is surreal in many ways. You travel all over the face of the planet, changing time zones every 10 days. You compete against the worlds best all in the pursuit of becoming World Champion. You have the opportunities to do what you love every single day of your life. You have the platform to inspire. No wonder it is one of the most coveted positions to be in!

Bianca Buitendag

ROXY: What is your ‘typical’ pre-competition rituals?

BIANCA: I have recently started listening to music to block out the distraction of my surroundings before heats. I make sure my equipment is prepared and that I have clarity about my strategy.

Bianca Buitendag

Tune in May 7th to see Bianca, Sally & Stephanie compete in stop #4 on the ASP Women’s World Tour in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil! We’ll be streaming the event LIVE on our Twitter so make sure to tune in @ROXY to follow along & catch all the live action!

#MakeItWest: 2014 Margaret River Pro Recap

Stop #2 on the ASP Women’s World Tour brought us to Western Australia to the Margaret River Pro where ROXY team riders Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Bianca Buitendag finished on top in the ASP tour rankings!

WCT Womens Ratings

From sunrise to sunset the waves at Margaret River delivered everything from world class perfection to some very challenging conditions with afternoon on-shore winds. A win at Margaret River takes a lot of patience and surf experience. Many of the athletes surf on multiple boards and have to adjust to the changing surf conditions throughout the day.

2014 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro

Stephanie Gilmore surfed strong throughout the week and finished the event in 3rd place. This is a huge win for Stephanie, placing her in a tie for 1st place with Carissa Moore in the current ASP Women’s World  Championship Tour rankings!

Sally Fitzgibbons surfed as a fierce competitor from day 1 of the event. Spending two weeks surfing in Western Australia prior to the event, Sally proved to have great local knowledge with her wave selection, finishing the event in 3rd place.

Board Games with Teen Vogue #POPsurf

How about a little bit of board games with ROXY team riders Stephanie Gilmore and Monyca Eleogram and our favorite travel partner and beach read, Teen Vogue?

We met up for a little test drive of our new ROXY POP Surf collection for a quick beach/street rendezvous up at Matador State Beach and Surf Rider Beach, situated in Stephanie’s favorite little California getaway – Malibu. With boards in tow and plenty of palm print we spent the day slaving away under the sun!

Teen Vogue’s POP Surf picks included this Neon Tide Long Sleeve Rashguard, the Neon Tide Surfer Bustia, and the Sunset Remix Tank Dress, but the question remains…what’s your favorite POP Surf piece? See for yourself and share back with us #POPsurf.

Congratulations to the 2014 ROXY Pro Gold Coast Winner Stephanie Gilmore

Stephanie Gilmore Wins the 2014 #ROXYpro Gold Coast ©timo

It was the final of finals for the 2014 ASP ROXY Pro Gold Coast.

To set the scene, after two absolutely stacked semifinal heats with Stephanie Gilmore up against 2013 reigning world champ Carissa Moore, closely  followed by heat two with Rookie of the Year Bianca Buitendag facing off against powerhouse Lakey Peterson, Snapper Rocks was absolutely pumping and energy was nothing short of electric!

Local girl, 4x Roxy Pro champ, and ROXY team rider Stephanie Gilmore made incredible wave selections during her heat and walked away with an upsetting win over Carissa Moore.

South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag took on California girl, Lakey Peterson at Snapper Rocks and narrowly took the win and would face off in the final matchup of the day.

A first final ever for Bianca Buitendag, she brought so much heart and excitement into this final. A goofy footer and rookie, Bianca couldn’t have had a more memorable match up against teammate Stephanie Gilmore. It was the absolute biggest heat in her young career.

With weather on our side, and the waves getting bigger as the day progressed, it was homegrown Gold Coast native Stephanie Gilmore who took the prized 2014 ROXY Pro Gold Coast crown after being paraded up the beach by friends and family for her 5th ROXY Pro victory. Considered her favorite spot on the entire tour Stephanie commented, “To win here today at the ROXY Pro at Snapper on the Gold Coast is one of my absolute favorite things in the world to do. Today has been an incredible day, it’s been a long week, but so many emotions, so much anticipation, and um yeah, wow, I love winning here in front of my friends, my family, the waves were pumping, the guys and the girls were spoiled and, yeah, thank you, thanks to everyone at ROXY for supporting me, and of course the Quiksilver family to be down here with all the boys watching is really cool and obviously congratulations to Bianca. To surf the final with Bianca is really special.” Stephanie Gilmore #ROXYpro Gold Coast Stephanie Gilmore #ROXYpro Gold Coast

After zero victories last year, and her lowest ranking on the WCT, we’re thinking this is a major comeback year for Stephanie Gilmore and starting off the season on this note with Women’s Surfing where it is only makes us excited to see more! More! MORE!

We asked Steph about her mindset going into the next tour events, “To start off the year with a win has just been so amazing. I didn’t even get one win last year, to start the year off at home definitely makes me feel confident heading into Bells & Margaret River. The rest of the Australian leg is going to be great and I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t wait. “
