Meet the YKPA Kids of Bali, and be inspired by their spirit

YKPA Kids Bali

Giving back and getting involved with the local community during Bali’s Big Eco Weekend has been an incredible experience! Even better, connecting with the communities we visit is always the icing on the cake.

Inspired to continue giving back to the Bali community, we discovered the story of YKPA kids through some of the items they sell locally. YKPA “Yayasan Kasih Peduli Anak” is making an impact by offering opportunities, giving loving support, education, health care, and skills for disadvantaged children.

Kelia Moniz, Rosy Hodge, Bruna Schmitz, LeeAnn Curren and Sally Fitzgibbons spent an afternoon getting to know the kids and learning about the organization.

As we toured the home, a group of kids were practicing some of their dancing. Initially shy, they showed us their moves- a beautiful mix of contemporary and traditional Balinese dancing.

It wasn’t long before they were pulling the Roxy team up for a few lessons!

Laughing at our lack of rhythm for the Balinese style, the kids took over the dance floor with another choreographed performance.

With the dance lessons over, the kids took us out into their courtyard. Communication wasn’t easy with the language barrier but laughter and a soccer ball were the perfect tools for translation.

YKPA Kids Bali

It was a special afternoon, to spend time with the children who have so little when it comes to possessions but so much when it comes to passion and spirit.  We enjoyed all of the laughter we shared and won’t forget this day in Bali.

Bali’s Big Eco Weekend: Educating, Protecting & Conserving Bali’s Beaches…One Sea Turtle at a Time!

Roxy and Quiksilver team riders and legends kicked off Bali’s Big Eco Weekend with ateam signing at Legian Beach. A huge crowd gathered for the chance to meet their heroes and grab an autograph and a photo or two. The team loved sharing the mutual stoke from the fans! Plenty of smiles all round!

Getting ready for the beach clean up, we rolled up our sleeves and joined the dedicated clean up crew of local community members and visitors to help clean up Legian Beach.

With non-degradable waste as the by-product of not just the local environment, but also from the rapidly growing population of Indonesia, raising awareness of the alarming issue was the driving force of the weekend.

Despite picking up trash, we still managed to look stylish, as clearly demonstrated by Bruna!

As the cleanup efforts were tallied, we joined the crowd and headed to the presentation. We were welcomed by a traditional band and beautiful Balinese dancers, the excitement drawing people in as they came in from the surf. Given a brief presentation of the initiatives beginnings, we all pledged to continue the clean up efforts in Bali and to take the message home to share with others.

As the formalities finished up, the Bali Sea Turtle Society announced it was time for the turtle release! Over 1,000 hatchlings were ready to be released into the ocean.

Rosy, Sally, Kelia and Bruna each gave their turtles a few words of encouragement before setting them off into the wild, hoping they would not only survive but come back to Bali’s beaches to mate in the future.

It was a great moment to share as we watched the tiny turtles make their way towards the water then swept into the ocean to begin their new life!

As the day drew to a close, competitors of the Uluwatu Challenge were invited to partake in a Balinese Hindu ceremony.

Dressed in traditional sarongs, we took our place on the sand as the blessing was given by the local temple priest. Showered with sacred water and blessed with the customary rice placed on the forehead for good fortune, we watched the sun set over the ocean.

Congratulations Stephanie! 5x Word Champion Stephanie Gilmore Voted #1 on ESPN’s List of Top 50 Female Athletes in Action Sports

Guess who has done it again!?!?

Stephanie Gilmore

That’s right…5x ASP Women’s World Tour Champion & ROXY team rider, Stephanie Gilmore was voted #1 on ESPN’s list of  the top 50 female athletes in action sports!

Stephanie Gilmore

Stephanie Gilmore came out swinging in 2014. After a lackluster, injury-plagued season that saw her slide down the ASP ratings to an uncharacteristic fifth in 2013, Stephanie proved she’s just as much a competitive threat as ever, dominating the ROXY Pro Gold Coast to take the first event of the new year.  She is currently tied for 1st place on the Women’s World Championship Tour with Carissa Moore.

Transcending surfing, Gilmore is also an ESPY winner, as well as a Laureus World Sports Award recipient.

Roxy stands out as the true heart of the mountain and the wave, with 3 athletes clenching positions in ESPN’s top 50. Olympic gold medalist snowboarder Torah Bright was ranked #9 and Sally Fitzgibbons, an ASP world championship contender, rounded out the list at #31.

#MakeItWest: 2014 Margaret River Pro Recap

Stop #2 on the ASP Women’s World Tour brought us to Western Australia to the Margaret River Pro where ROXY team riders Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Bianca Buitendag finished on top in the ASP tour rankings!

WCT Womens Ratings

From sunrise to sunset the waves at Margaret River delivered everything from world class perfection to some very challenging conditions with afternoon on-shore winds. A win at Margaret River takes a lot of patience and surf experience. Many of the athletes surf on multiple boards and have to adjust to the changing surf conditions throughout the day.

2014 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro

Stephanie Gilmore surfed strong throughout the week and finished the event in 3rd place. This is a huge win for Stephanie, placing her in a tie for 1st place with Carissa Moore in the current ASP Women’s World  Championship Tour rankings!

Sally Fitzgibbons surfed as a fierce competitor from day 1 of the event. Spending two weeks surfing in Western Australia prior to the event, Sally proved to have great local knowledge with her wave selection, finishing the event in 3rd place.

The ROXY girls hit the ASP Red Carpet

Action item for the evening – ASP red carpet and awards show for the Roxy girls…which means a little styling, makeup and hair to help celebrate and congratulate these girls on 2013 well done! Plus, it’s just fun to get dolled up and styled up with your friends so we had to make it happen.

Accepting her second consecutive Longboard World Title was none other than Roxy’s own Hawaiian beauty Kelia Moniz – who was an absolute showstopper in her #POPsurf neoprene cropped top and flowy skirt. The best part, was Kelia left it up to her fans to pick between yellow and pink…and the winning color turned out to be her favorite too (but of course she couldn’t have gone wrong in either!).

ROXY Pro Gold Coast 2014 #ROXYpro

The first stop of the 2014 ASP World Tour, the ROXY Pro Gold Coast, officially kicks off March 1st.  It’s summer in Australia so expect sunshine, bikinis and some epic surfing with surprises along the way (you’ll see).

This also marks the first time the ASP is officially taking over the tour and we’re excited to see the changes  to support women’s surfing around the world. Roxy team riders Stephanie Gilmore @StephanieGilmore , Sally Fitzgibbons @Sally_Fitz and Bianca Buitendag @BiancaBuitendag will begin their season alongside other familiar faces on the new Women’s ASP World Championship Tour [WCT]. A favorite spot of the WCT for more reasons than one, the Gold Coast – Snapper Rocks (better known as Australia’s Super Bank) hosts a perfect right-hand point and boosts the premier amphitheater setting to experience the action firsthand (just see the pictures for a taste)…And the weather looks in our favor as well!

Roxy’s very own Rosy Hodge will also be taking over as part of the core commentary team for the ASP.  Nothing beats the South African beauty and her quick witted reporting (nothing – period), so we’re stoked to see her representing the tour.

So…get ready for some giveaways (check back here soon), follow ROXY on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for all the latest updates and don’t forget to watch live on the ASP’s new event website.

In the meantime, let the trailer set the stage and get a taste of what’s to come for the 13th edition of the ROXY Pro Gold Coast!
