Maldives Uncovered with Stylist Tal Kohen

How did the trip to Maldives inspire your own personal wardrobe or styling for the shoot?
The designers at Roxy do such an amazing job bringing out the personalities of their surfers and customers in their clothes. The Maldives was the perfect location to compliment the Roxy Spring ’13 collection. The vivd colors and fun patterns in the pieces worked great with the culturally rich and bright, beautiful surroundings. To complete the look and achieve the ultimate Roxy girl vibe, I incorporated bold colored and organic jewelry.

Where do you get your best inspiration from as a stylist?
Besides movies, television, fashion books, and magazines, my strongest inspiration comes from the people who surround me in the places I call home: New York City and Los Angeles. NYC is home to some of the most unique, creative, and fashionable people, while LA’s relaxed warm weather breeds more comfortable, confident, and free-spirited people.

How long have you been styling and how did you get into it?
I’ve been styling professionally for about 7 years now, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve been styling my family and friends.
I was born and raised on the west coast, but I always knew I wanted to live in New York, the fashion capital. After graduating college, I decided to make the move. I got very lucky early on and was given the opportunity to assist a stylist on a commercial. She took a chance on me given that I had no real professional styling experience of my own. After that, I was hooked. Through contacts and acquaintances, I went on to style TV shows and photo shoots, and within a short time, went off on my own.

What was your most memorable moment while styling the surfers in the Maldives?
The Roxy girls are pure fun – there is never a dull moment. Some of my most memorable Maldives moments are watching Kelia [Moniz]and Kassia [Meador] surf wearing the saltwater chinos, Bruna [Schmitz] swaying a little boat back and forth almost tipping it over, and Monyca [Byrne-Wickey] and Sally [Fitzgibbons] dancing at the bow on our way to a remote sand island. Oh and of course the day all the girls decided to jump off the top level of our 4 story boat into the water. Sorry, there are just too many, I couldn’t give you just one moment…

Any tricks of the trade that every girl should know?
Besides investing in fashion staples such as jeans, the perfect T, the “go with everything” bag…the best and most important thing to wear is confidence. If you feel great, you look great.

If you weren’t styling…what would you dare to be doing?
I love food and I love traveling. If I wasn’t a stylist, I would absolutely love to be a traveling food critic!

Thanks to Tal Kohen for answering our ‘need-to-knows’ and to all the girls looking to get a little inspiration in their own lives, remember to dream big and #DAREYOURSELF everyday. See all of Tal’s top picks for Spring!

catalog countdown: winter style inspiration

Our upcoming Winter catalog spotlights June Bhongjan and Esthera Preda, the girls behind the lens of the Roxy Wanderlust snowboarding video series. They are masters of cold weather style, so we caught up with them for some winter fashion advice.

You have such unique style, how do you stay stylish in cold weather and snow while also staying warm and dry?
June: I love using warm functional first layers that keep heat in and close to my body, then layering it with a few of my favorite button ups and jackets. Everything else is about wearing a few key statement pieces that are also functional, like bundling up with a thick knit scarf and keeping your clothes dry with a long water resistant parka. It can end up feeling bulky if you do it wrong, so it’s important to invest in some technical first layers (like Roxy’s Tree Trunk layers) and good outerwear. Layering lets you mix and match to create your own personal style.

What inspires your winter style?
Esthera: I could say that my winter style is a mix between street fashion and vintage children’s winter wear. I like my pants and jackets to have modern cuts but I also like to wear big beanies, wool mittens and oversize jackets (the kind your mom would zip up for you in the morning).

Any tips on transitioning your closet from summer to winter?
June: I still wear my favorite tank tops and shorts, but I layer them with fall staples like leggings, scarves, oversize cardigans, flannels or denim button up shirts. If this isn’t enough I throw on my favorite military parka.
Esthera: During winter, I try to give a second life to my summer clothes by layering up. For example, to wear a delicate summer dress, I pair it with a wool sweater, thick leggings and combat boots with warm socks. For me, mixing fabrics and layers is the trick!

How would you describe your off snow style compared to your on snow style?
Esthera: They’re both pretty similar in the way that I like to add layers and wear earth tones. But off snow, I like to experiment a little more. Right now, Roxy’s hi-lo hem pullovers (the Rochester and the Elm) are my favourite. I also really like the Briarwood street jacket because it’s very convenient when it’s time to transition from snowboard clothes to a street style.

Name your all time favorite piece of flare during the winter, and why?
Esthera: Beanies! I’m very picky when it comes to finding the best beanie. When I do find a good one, I keep it for years.
June: I love my red flannel. It’s a classic red and black plaid, but I’ve been wearing it for 6 years now and I haven’t even thought of retiring it.

The mountains will open soon, what fun new style ideas /trends your looking forward to trying out this season? Esthera: I’m excited about all those new riding shirts that combine the look of a flannel over a hoodie like Torah Bright Dusk Riding Shirt. I’ve been wearing flannels over hoodies for years now, but the combination of both into an insulated good fitting shirt seems very appealing to me.

Fall for Colored Denim

As Summer comes to a close and Fall rolls in so does an exciting blend of new colors. More simply, we’re tripping out on color and obsessing over our colored denim.

With colors reminiscent of the coast of Northern California: Big Sur (the location of this year’s Fall photo shoot), a mix of warm sunset hues, golden glows, moss covered coastlines,  turquoise sea-lines, and a mix of our favorite deep indigos infuse our denim to make an unmatched mix up of fun colors for Fall.

Since denim undoubtedly reigns supreme in our closets this time of year we’re delighted to have plenty to pick from…And we love that the ankle length gives that extra needed versatility to pair with ankle booties like the Westbourne boots and looks rocker chic with a pair of rolled up Skinny Floods in Moss Cove (a personal fav of Kelia Moniz).

For a softer approach, the boldly beautiful Gold denim is nothing short of sweet alongside the cropped vanilla Moon Fall top, and for the feet, some lacey Sloane Boots, in tan of course!  To us, this is the perfect golden girl ensemble for the season.

Continuing with the denim trend, warm it up with vivid scarlets in the Coastal Cove denim. This rich color is easily mixed with some easy Azul sandals or some strappy two-tone Biscayne Boots, and don’t forget a sweater!

…and in the spirit of our opening pic…sorry Summer, but ‘That’s a wrap!’

Chasing the White Trend…

We love white and want to show it in every way possible. We love it because it’s fresh, crisp and so ROXY!

That’s why we’re chasing the White Trend this Spring season. Here are some of our top picks for white right now…

We love this white bikini because it will intensify your tan and look great with any coverup- go for the Wild Emotion tiki tri bikini top & Brazilian string bikini bottoms.  Try pairing it with a lacey top like Sky of Stars and play up the crop with your favorite pair of shorts or dress it up with some jeans and wedges. Another great layering option is the Take Flight Sweater. With its dolman sleeve and crochet detailing, it’s an easy piece to throw on and off…did we mention it’s White!
