ROXY Outdoor Fitness ambassador and DARE YOURSELF finalist Angie Chiuzzi Johnson shows us how she gets her workouts to work ‘double duty’ for her. See how her daily fitness routine paired with healthy eating can help you achieve a well-balanced workout regimen.

After a rigorous backyard yoga session (complete with headstands) in the Double Duty Tank and Standard Tight it’s important to refuel your body with a good dose of carbs, protein, and superfoods.

As a Holistic Health Coach, Angie’s philosophy is that a healthy diet is just as important as a great workout.  Embracing a life of self-sustainability by growing her own garden and raising a flock of chickens for fresh eggs, some of Angie’s favorite post-workout meal comes from her own garden by the sea.

Here’s one of Angie’s quick and easy recipes inspired by her own garden that you can make at home after a challenging workout of your own:

-       ¾ cups of your choice of: Coconut milk, almond milk, or hemp milk

-       1 scoop of your favorite natural hemp or whey protein powder

-       ½  of a banana

-       3-4 ice cubes

-       4 strawberries (or a few blueberries)

-       1 teaspoon local bee pollen

-       1 teaspoon spirulina

-       1 branch kale

-       Mix ingredients together and bend away to bliss!

Roxy Outdoor Fitness ambassador Katie McLean knows any great workout is maximized by the food you eat. Make your Roxy Outdoor Fitness workout worth it by fueling up after with a healthy, hearty salad. Wanna know the secret to scrumptious salads? It’s simple: satisfy all the sensations of taste. Think a bitter, a sweet, a spice, a hearty protein, a healthy fat, and some crunchy, creamy, or juicy textures. Now get creative and come up with your custom combination of ingredients!

1. Start with a bitter lettuce as your base: romaine, spinach, spring mix, arugula, kale, chard.

*Cheat any salad complete with these staples: tomato, onion, avocado, and ground pepper.

2. Incorporate some texture: sprouts, chopped cabbage, cucumber, celery, broccoli, beets, bell pepper.

*Bonus points for color!

3. Go nuts: slivered almonds, walnuts, pistachios, pepitas, sunflower seeds, chia seeds.

5. Fill up on protein: quinoa, chickpeas, beans, lentils, tofu, turkey, chicken, salmon, or sliced hardboiled egg.

6. Add something sweet and juicy: apple, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, grapes, tangerine, kiwi, mango, pomegranate.

And a chewy dried fruit: cranberry, raisin, apricot, goji berries.

*Scope what’s in season at your local farmers market for the freshest ingredients and try something new in your salad like summer squash or peaches, raw or grilled!

7. Dress it up simply: The freshest, tastiest, simplest, and healthiest dressings are homemade.

Take a few moments to center yourself by sitting in the Lotus Position and practicing conscious breathing while listening to the waves.

The perfect start to beach yoga is Salutation To The Sun.

After this the variety of yoga poses are endless, some well known poses include Warrior Pose, Plank, Tree Pose, or Cobra.

To add a new level of difficulty to your work out you can even try a headstand in the sand.

ROXY Outdoor Fitness: Gillian Gibree brings SUP Yoga to a whole new level in Tahoe, California

Last Saturday, ROXY Outdoor Fitness ambassador Gillian Gibree brought SUP Yoga to a whole other level on beautiful Lake Tahoe, California. Approximately 200 SUP Yogis gathered during the Tahoe Nalu SUP Festival and flowed through a sun salutation to break the world record for the largest number of people practicing SUP Yoga at once!

Since the weather in mountains has already cooled down, Gillian decided to wear her Daybreak Tee and Enhance Capris during her nautical flow. The top has a flattering open back that gave her style during her down dog!

After the final Namaste was said on the crystal clear lake, everyone cheered with paddle in hands. Following the class, Roxy and Paddle Into Fitness donated prize packages to the SUP Yogi who held the longest headstand and the largest donor for the Tahoe Safe Alliance, a local women’s shelter. The event had a great turnout, gorgeous mountain weather, and supported an awesome cause!

The following day, Gillian participated in the Elite Survivor Race that was a combination of sprint paddleboarding, beach running, and buoy turns in her pink Ready Steady Swim Top and her Land to Sea swim bottoms, finishing third overall in a field of tough competitors. Roxy Outdoor Fitness: 6 easy Exercises to prepare your body for any workout

Climbing is a sport that involves every single muscle of the body, so it is important to be well rounded in workouts. Professional climber and Roxy Outdoor Fitness ambassador Sierra Blair-Coyle knows this better than anyone and demands exercises that prepare her body for difficult holds in climbing.

Here are Sierra’s 6 easy stretches that will get you ready for any workout! And what better way to enjoy your workout then have the technical benefits of the Ready Steady Top that doubles as a swim top and sports bra and the Spike Shorts that are fit to flatter and beat the heat both in and outdoors.

1. Rows in Prone Position (10 reps per arm)

Benefits: Full body exercise.

-Start in push-up stance with feet shoulder width apart, handles balanced on dumbbells.  Alternately pull up elbow behind your back and lower onto ground without moving your body.

2. Pistol Squats (15 reps per leg)

Benefits: Works abdominal and leg muscles.

-Start standing with one leg lifted in front of your body.  Slowly lower yourself as if you are sitting in a chair, while keeping your leg extended in front of you.  Return to standing position and repeat.

*Pistol squats can be completed with or without weight.

3 & 4. Overhead Shoulder Press (15 reps)

Benefits: Works shoulder muscles, upper back, and core.

-Start with elbows by your sides, dumbbells in your hands, palms facing away from you.  Push arms above head until they are straight, but do not lock out your elbows.  Return to starting position and repeat.

5 & 6. V Ups (25 reps)

Benefits: Works abdominal muscles.

-Start laying flat on your back.  Lift arms and legs at the same time to create a V position.  Keep moving until your hands and feet touch, while keeping your arms and legs straight.  Lower into starting position and repeat.

There’s no better way to explore an uninhabited shoreline than in a kayak. Pack a few snacks, toss on your Beach Fever Swim Top, throw on some sunscreen, add a hat and cast off. Here are some tips from ROXY Outdoor Fitness ambassador Devon DeMint of The Mermaid Chronicles to help you get the most out of your adventure.

–Observe the wind, ocean currents and tide before you paddle out.

–Start by paddling in to the wind at the beginning. This way you can tackle the more difficult part of the journey when you have the most energy and ride with the wind on your way back.

–Don’t rely solely on your arms to paddle. Make sure you rotate your torso while engaging your core as you paddle. This will help you propel the kayak with your whole body and get in a good core workout at the same time.

–For a more intense workout, incorporate interval training into your outing. Paddle at full power for two minutes, then coast with your momentum. Rest and repeat.

–Finally, don’t forget to take in the surroundings. It’s not every day that a workout is this scenic!

It’s finally summertime and every Roxy Outdoor Fitness girl is anxious to get active outdoors—but sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t get the memo. Onshore wind or overcast skies, it’s easy to get discouraged by the elements, but there are days you have to take them head-on! Roxy Outdoor Fitness Ambassador and beach volleyball player Rachel Moore show us how to use those windy days to her advantage.

As a beach volleyball player it’s easy to look out the window and see the palm trees blowing in the wind and want to call it quits, but that’s when its time to throw your Onshore Bikini in your Game Ready Backpack, grab a ball, and push yourself the most.

Beach volleyball will help your speed and agility, but the best beach volleyball players are the ones who can control the ball in the wind. Get out there and practice serving, hitting, passing and setting in the wind to get good at controlling the ball. Learn how to wait and watch the ball all the way to contact. This will help you see the direction of the wind and predict where the ball will end up. Pushing yourself in the elements is the best way to fine-tune your skills, and training in the sand provides natural resistance for your body, creating a full body workout. The beach has a tendency to almost grab you around the ankles and hold you as you try to move. Crank up your cardio by jump training, running, and diving in the sand. Take advantage of what Mother Nature gives us. Look at it as challenge and a way to strengthen yourself and your sport!
