Roxy Team Rider Sally Fitzgibbons had the honor of handing over a hefty donation of about $11,000 on behalf of Quiksilver Indonesia on November 1st. The recipient of the check was Pak Agung Tresna of the Kuta Beach Sea Turtle Conservation which supports the on-going efforts to preserve the endangered sea turtles of Bali and ensure their survival.

Sally along with the Quiksilver Indonesia surf team carried 30 newly hatched turtles to the beach and sent them out in the Indian Ocean.  

“These little guys are so cute,” Sally exclaimed.  “I wish I could take one home with me!  This is such a special experience for me, seeing these tiny turtles being cared for and being protected then released into their natural environment.  I feel so honored see it first hand, and to be a part of it here today,” she added.

We completely agree- how can you not love these little guys?

2011 Point Mugu Surf Contest! August 20-21st at Naval Base Ventura County

The 2011 Point Mugu Surf Contest presented by Quiksilver, is coming to the Ventura Naval Base August 20 and 21st. The contest is open to the public and admission is FREE. Over 150 surfing contestants are expected with processional surfers John Mel, Adam Virs, Typer Newton among others participating at one of the Southern California’s best surfing locations.

This particular surfing area off the coast of Point Mugu faces in a south direction which gives a unique wave. The South swell, submarine canyon and sandbars cause waves to break differently and bigger than at other beaches. There are six different divisions: Open, Military Men, Open Women, Quiksilver Young Guns, Body Board and Quiksilver Expressions Session featuring pros. Check in starts at 6:30am and the competition will run from 7am – 5pm. Each heat lasts 15 minutes. There will be multiple heats per division and the top two scores from each heat will advance for that division. The finals are scheduled for August 21, 2011.

The third round of the women’s event at the US Open of Surfing was greeted with sunshine and 2-3 ft waves. The lumpy, bumpy conditions this afternoon were much better than Monday’s first rounds, making it easier for the girls to find those workable sections. 

Sally and Sofia both battled it out against Hawaii’s Melanie Bartels, who opened up the heat with the leading score. Sofia took over mid-heat after her huge snap and recover in the white wash, topping Mel’s high score.

Sally couldn’t seem to find the right wave, but her patience paid off after finding a couple lined up waves toward the end of the heat and throwing down multiple maneuvers. Sally’s total score was a 10.6, finishing in first place. Sofia closed the heat with a 9.97 and will be surfing in round four tomorrow.

Congratulations to Roxy’s Phillipa Anderson for winning the Chilli Junior Pro over the weekend in fun head high surf at Trigg Point in Perth, Australia. This puts Phillipa in the #1 position on the ASP Junior Rankings. “I’m stoked that I won,” Anderson said. “I’ve been training hard because I go to Europe tomorrow for an ASP 6-Star event and I really want to do well. This event has given me confidence and I’m feeling good and I hope I can keep the roll going over there.”
Phillipa heads to Hossegor, France for the Swatch Girls Pro, a 6 star ASP Star Series event. She will join Roxy team riders, Sally Fitzgibbons, Rosy Hodge, Bruna Schmitz, LeeAnn Curren, Sofia Mulanovich, Ornella Pellizari, Sarah Baum and Sarah Mason. Go Team Roxy! Stay tuned for updates.

The fifth Women’s World Tour Event stop out of seven in Rio de Janiero, Brazil is on hold today due to small swell conditions. Roxy’s own Sally Fitzgibbons and Sofia Mulanovich surfed Round 1 yesterday both winning their heats and advancing straight to Round 3. Tatiana Weston-Webb Wins the Pipeline Pro!

It was perfect weather for the Science Hawaii Womens Pipeline Pro, at the Banzai Pipeline, on O’ahu’s North Shore. As the whales played offshore, waves were solid in the 4-8 foot range with light trades, and just a little rain. 42 of the best womensurfers and bodyboarders from Hawaii and around the world competed for $3000 in prize money and the chance to surf uncrowded Pipeline for a day. Team Roxy dominated the Shortboard division, with 13 year old Tatiana Weston-Webb Winning the event over teammate Brianna Cope in the final.
Congrats to both girls for a strong showing at the world famous Pipeline!
