The name of this week’s band is also one of our most fervent wishes: Eternal
Summers. While you hopefully spent the last few months relaxing and soaking
up rays, this Virginia-based duo comprised of Nicole Yun and Daniel Cundiff
has been holed up in the back woods, creating the fuzzy, jangly Silver, out
on September 28th on Kanine Records (home to one of our other faves,
Surfer Blood!). As we head into the fall, let the cool, woodsy sounds of Eternal
Summers ease you into things. And look on the bright side: if summer were
eternal we’d never get to go snowboarding!

Some things are just meant to go together – peanut butter and jelly, fresh powder/waves on a sunny day, and Sia and Roxy. Crafting dance pop with a clever, emotional core, Sia has been soundtracking our surf and snow sessions for years now, and her new record, We Are Born, is super fun. It’s a little faster and a little wilder than previous efforts, but still personal. The album’s latest single “Clap Your Hands” has been remixed by Diplo and Prince Vince to make it even more dance floor–friendly (if you never watched Sia dance in the video for “You’ve Changed” you’re missing out).  Though she calls Australia home, Sia’s popular all over the world, inspiring fans with her songs, her fashion, and her charm. We can’t wait to see what she does next!

Available 8/25-9/1: The Thermals “I Don’t Believe You”

Upon first listen, you’d never guess that The Thermals are comprised of only three members. After all, Hutch Harris, Kathy Foster and Westin Glass make a big noise, and it’s getting bigger (and better) with each record of sweaty indie rock anthems. For their upcoming fifth full-length, Personal Life, the band re-teamed with producer Chris Walla (aka lead guitarist for Death Cab For Cutie). He brings his signature crisp and shiny pop production to The Thermals’ power pop melodies, high-energy riffs, and unforgettable hooks.  Personal Life drops on September 7^th on KRS Records, after which the band will head out across America on a month-long tour. We think the single “I Don’t Believe You” just might be the perfect accompaniment to your back to school/work angst. Download it and turn it up!

Available 8/18 – 8/25 – Sister Crayon “Souls of Gold”

Like a lot of bands we’re into, Sister Crayon hail from California – up Sacramento way to be exact. Initially the band consisted only of Terra Lopez playing classical guitar over pre-programmed beats at house parties. Eventually she recruited Dani Fernandez, Genaro Ulloa, and Nicholas Suhr to round things out. After months of performing up and down the coast, their singles are starting to generate major buzz and anticipation for the release of their debut EP Enter Into Holy (Or)ders is high.  The band’s infectious beats, burbling keyboards, and smart female vocals scream “Roxy girl” to us. Are you feeling it??

Happy Monday, everyone! As we enjoy one of the last full weeks of summer, the time is right for a new Land of Talk record. Led by singer/songwriter Elizabeth Powell, this indie rock trio from the frigid climes of Montreal has been on the road for the past two years in support of their debut album, Some Are Lakes. Now they’re back with Cloak and Cipher, a new full length comprised of tunes that are more mature, more sophisticated and more fun. The album also features a load of guests, including members of Stars, Silver Mount Zion Band, Wintersleep, Besnard Lakes, and a little band  you might have heard of called Arcade Fire. Available 8/11 – 8/18 – Tallest Trees “Skinny Little Wrists”

When you hear that a band hails from Nashville you probably assume they’ll be singing about how their boyfriend/girlfriend left them, accompanied by fiddle and pedal steel. Well, not Tallest Trees (though they did record their upcoming debut album, The Ostrich or the Lark, in a log cabin). Mixing electronic elements with stabbing guitars and ethereal harmonies, the Trees’ Thomas Samuel and Dabney Morris build dreamy anthems that are the perfect soundtrack to lying in a hammock or riding home after a long day at the beach. Bethany Costentino of Best Coast sings about the same classic subjects that pop stars do – wanting a boyfriend, how another girl might be prettier than her, how her boyfriend is kind of a letdown – but she does it with a sunny, low-fi sound that is uniquely Californian and nowhere near contemporary. The sound? Think dreamy harmonies and moody backing tracks that could almost be mistaken for Beach Boys outtakes. Best Coast’s debut, Crazy for You, will be released on July 27^th on Mexican Summer Records. It features 12 songs about romance and the beach, and it’s destined to be a record that defines your summer. Check it out!

We’ll just come right out and say it: Roxy hearts Cut Copy. As longtime fans of this Aussie electro-rock trio, we’re thrilled to bring you the new track “Where I’m Going” from their upcoming, as-yet-untitled album, which won’t be out until January. This track is being given away in conjunction with the band’s international tour of giant summer festivals (which includes a stop at Lollapalooza in Chicago), and while it’s not quite as dancefloor-ready as some of their earlier songs, it still sounds pretty delicious. After a few years of being friends – and a few drinks at lunch – Jason Lytle and Aaron Burtch of Grandaddy, and Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray of Earlimart, decided to join forces to become Admiral Radley, a bonafide indie rock supergroup, albeit one that’s a lot more subtle, snarky and humble than most star-studded combos. Formed between the beaches and museums of Southern California, yet heavily influenced by its members’ roots in the Central Valley towns of Modesto and Fresno, “AdRad” creates skewed indie pop that’s smart, funny and as majestic as the crashing surf. We’re super inspired by the energy, drive and enthusiasm of Frankie Rose. In the last few years she’s drummed for three powerhouse bands: Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls and Vivian Girls. Now she’s struck out on her own with Frankie Rose and the Outs, an all-girl band that matches the power and intensity of her three previous bands while sounding entirely new. Taking the lead on guitar and vocals, Rose is backed bassist Caroline Yes, guitarist Margot Bianca, and drummer Kate Ryan. Together this quartet fashions hi-fi, melodic dream-pop that’s influenced by the Beach Boys and Gilbert and Sullivan musicals. The band’s self-titled debut will be released on Slumberland Records September 21^st.
