Roxy team rider Kelia Moniz has done it again by claiming her 2nd consecutive ASP Women’s Longboard World Championship after winning the Swatch Girls Pro China 2013 hosted by Wanning in clean 3- 4ft surf peeling across the point break at Riyue Bay. For the third year in a row this event has crowned the ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion, and also for the third year in a row the same two surfers have made the final, with Williams winning in 2011, and Moniz taking the title last year.
Kelia Moniz, just 20 years old, has cemented her place in surfing history by becoming a two-time ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion. Moniz struggled early in the event, but came into form when it counted on Finals day using her trademark elegant style, power and flow to lock in some excellent scores and take the win.
“It doesn’t feel real yet, it will sink it when I go home and celebrate with family and friends,” Moniz said. “I don’t feel like I was surfing my best at the start of the event, and I was a little shaken up going into the final because Chelsea (Williams) was getting 8-point-rides all event. Then I just pulled myself together, listened to some good music, said a prayer, went out there and tried to just stay on my board and it worked. Winning back-to-back ASP World Longboard Titles is unbelievable! I couldn’t be happier.”
We were inspired to give back to the community, learn about the Fijian culture, swim like mermaids, surf the longest waves of our lives, workout with world class surfer Sally Fitzgibbons (and somehow keep up), but more importantly, we made lifelong friends. #DAREYOURSELF
See how the winners spent their time on this little heart-shaped island in this video!
Goodbyes are always the hardest (we’re really not very good at them), so in the last episode of the Ford Hawaii series, it only makes sense to take the long road with Kelia Moniz, Bruna Schmitz, and Kassia Meador on a scenic drive across the island and down into Honolulu in their Ford Fiesta. First stop in Honolulu, a little jam session with Ukelele maestro Jake Shumabukuro at a local recording studio, Island Sounds Studio. Next up, a car ride filled with island trippin’, picture flippin’, and reminiscing on the past 5 days in Oahu. What were your favorite parts of the Roxy Hawaii series? The athletes have theirs…Sandy’s Beach, coconut ice cream, shark cages, canoe racing, Waikiki views, Pineapple field rally races, and the list goes on…
In episode 4, Kelia Moniz (aka Sister), Bruna Schmitz, and a slightly timid Kassia Meador roll up in their Ford Fiesta for a little cliff jumping off the notorious ‘Jump Rock’ in Waimea Bay. The first jump is always the hardest; remember these girls are surfers…not skydivers.
After some turtle-filled free diving the girls fill up at a special place on the North Shore where the surf snack menu includes the famous Chocolate Haupia Pie at none other than Ted’s Bakery. Next stop, the motocross track, to meet up with Kelia’s brothers for a little red-dirt action in the Ford Fiesta! We can’t tell you how badly we want to take this thing for a ride like that again #FiestaMovement
How does a day turn from a healthy Acai bowl breakfast type of morning to potentially being shark bait in the afternoon?
Take a ride in our ROXY Ford Fiesta as the team (with Kelia in the driver’s seat) ‘goes for a snorkel’ with famed local waterman and shark whisperer Mark Healy in Day 3 of our Hawaiian adventure.
It doesn’t get more daring than 1 massive aluminum cage, and over 20 Galapagos sharks followed by a sunset photo shoot with Kassia Meador in Oahu’s famous Dole Pineapple Fields (a view that few tourists ever get to experience).
There’s nothing like getting up early and enjoying a morning sunrise surf session with the Queen of Queens (Beach, that is) – Kelia Moniz (plus, we like to take advantage of an open lineup).
In episode 2, Kelia takes teammates Bruna Schmitz and Kassia Meador around to some of her local favorites as they catch a ride in the Ford Fiesta. With bikinis in tow, they head to the ‘local’ side of the island Makaha Beach – Oahu’s true playground. Enjoy this week’s road tripping adventure and get inspired to try something new – maybe even a SUP Squatch? (just watch…you’ll see what we mean!).
In Kelia’s words “It’s always nice to give a little piece of your heaven to your friends”. Join the movement #FiestaMovement
Join our ride…this is the story of where ‘car meets board’ and for us that journey begins fresh off flight from California to Oahu where ROXY professional surfer and photographer Kassia Meador catches a ride with teammates Bruna Schmitz and Honolulu native Kelia Moniz.
Just think…3 girls, 5 days, and 1 mind blowing adventure that will have you daring to do the unthinkable. This 5 part series has the girls exploring the Island’s waters, waves and mountains, capturing rarely seen images while on Kassia’a editorial photo assignment…tag along as the gang meets some of the Island’s icons while touring in their ROXY Ford Fiesta. Stay tuned for a new ‘ROXY Hawaii: Kelia’s Ride with FORD FIESTA’ episode each week on Tuesday (for the next 5 weeks! Yeow!). #FiestaMovement
A few months ago we invited our friend and New York fashion blogger Kimberly Pesch of Eat.Sleep.Wear. to California for the first time and give her a taste of the ROXY way of life – early morning surf checks, beach bonfires, the team, sunsets for days…the list goes on…
Well, we guess it was enough to make her pack her bags and make her ‘California Dreaming’ a reality since she now calls CA her home!
Enjoy this ROXY Style Spy vid from our shoot in Santa Cruz, CA where Kim breaks down some stylish options with Monyca Byrne Wickey and Kelia Moniz and get inspired for some great Summer-Fall transitional looks that will keep you HOT FOR FALL!
The Inaugural ROXY Montauk Classic event was held this past weekend at Ditch Plains in Montauk, NY. The event brought in locals as well as avid surfers all the way from Florida, Illinois, Hawaii and beyond! Over 100 participants competed for prizes including Paul Mitchell product, local shop Air & Speed gift cards, and tons of Roxy goodies. Five time World Champion, Stephanie Gilmore, World Longboard Champion, Kelia Moniz and Monyca Byrne-Wickey were on site signing autographs, handing out awards and schmoozing and taking pictures with the elated crowd.
Saturday brought clouds and wind but that did not stop the contestants from braving the chilly weather and rippin’ while Sunday was a perfectly, quintessential summer, bluebird day for competition. Kudos to the on-lookers as well those who cheered on our participants and enjoyed the fun!
Event sponsors included Paul Mitchell, activating and offering ‘beachy’ hair-dos which was a non-stop line, Sun Bum sunscreen, which helped keep visitors protected from the New England sun; HeartBeet Juicery joined in and gave out their amazing concoctions of juices; Vitacoco water kept everyone hydrated; and Beachcomber Resort, kept us well-rested!
Huge thanks to the Ditch Plains and Montauk locals for letting us hold the event-hope to see you next year! #ROXYMontaukClassic
