Maldives Uncovered with Stylist Tal Kohen

How did the trip to Maldives inspire your own personal wardrobe or styling for the shoot?
The designers at Roxy do such an amazing job bringing out the personalities of their surfers and customers in their clothes. The Maldives was the perfect location to compliment the Roxy Spring ’13 collection. The vivd colors and fun patterns in the pieces worked great with the culturally rich and bright, beautiful surroundings. To complete the look and achieve the ultimate Roxy girl vibe, I incorporated bold colored and organic jewelry.

Where do you get your best inspiration from as a stylist?
Besides movies, television, fashion books, and magazines, my strongest inspiration comes from the people who surround me in the places I call home: New York City and Los Angeles. NYC is home to some of the most unique, creative, and fashionable people, while LA’s relaxed warm weather breeds more comfortable, confident, and free-spirited people.

How long have you been styling and how did you get into it?
I’ve been styling professionally for about 7 years now, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve been styling my family and friends.
I was born and raised on the west coast, but I always knew I wanted to live in New York, the fashion capital. After graduating college, I decided to make the move. I got very lucky early on and was given the opportunity to assist a stylist on a commercial. She took a chance on me given that I had no real professional styling experience of my own. After that, I was hooked. Through contacts and acquaintances, I went on to style TV shows and photo shoots, and within a short time, went off on my own.

What was your most memorable moment while styling the surfers in the Maldives?
The Roxy girls are pure fun – there is never a dull moment. Some of my most memorable Maldives moments are watching Kelia [Moniz]and Kassia [Meador] surf wearing the saltwater chinos, Bruna [Schmitz] swaying a little boat back and forth almost tipping it over, and Monyca [Byrne-Wickey] and Sally [Fitzgibbons] dancing at the bow on our way to a remote sand island. Oh and of course the day all the girls decided to jump off the top level of our 4 story boat into the water. Sorry, there are just too many, I couldn’t give you just one moment…

Any tricks of the trade that every girl should know?
Besides investing in fashion staples such as jeans, the perfect T, the “go with everything” bag…the best and most important thing to wear is confidence. If you feel great, you look great.

If you weren’t styling…what would you dare to be doing?
I love food and I love traveling. If I wasn’t a stylist, I would absolutely love to be a traveling food critic!

Thanks to Tal Kohen for answering our ‘need-to-knows’ and to all the girls looking to get a little inspiration in their own lives, remember to dream big and #DAREYOURSELF everyday. See all of Tal’s top picks for Spring!

DVF loves ROXY: interview with Designer Diane Von Furstenberg in Malibu

We were all so excited for Diane to meet our surfers Monyca and Kelia for the first time in Malibu. Diane seemed to marvel as her creations for the DVF loves ROXY collection came to life on the girls- the prints, the cuts, the quality and just how great the product moved and looked on!

We were eagerly anticipating hearing about the inspiration for the collection directly from Diane, and she did not disappoint- from stories of her time spent on the beach to parallels of the DVF Woman and Roxy girl. Diane’s mission to empower women to ‘Be the woman you want to be” seemed to be realized in the Roxy girls- and it was so fitting that her mantra for this collection became ‘Follow your heart and dare.”

We invited fashion blogger Aimee Song to our Malibu shoot to meet Diane and the girls. We love Aimee’s beach-wise sense of style, and knew she would be the perfect person to cover the launch of the DVF loves ROXY collection- check out her Behind the Scenes post from the shoot!

Maldives Surf Trip with Roxy

Playful right-handers and crystal-clear waters—the Maldives almost seems like they were made for our Roxy Surf Team. The tropical paradise has three key surfing zones spanning over 300 miles—that’s 300 miles of pristine point breaks as well as colorful, shallow reefs. Whether it was Sally Fitz slashing a front-hand right, or Kassia Meador dancing on her longboard, the Roxy girls were chasing dreams and catching waves just in time when spring fever set in. They grabbed their spring bikinis for single-fin cruises and reef explorations. Check out a snapshot of their Maldivian adventures.

Get out there, your wave is waiting…#DAREYOURSELF

Congratulations, Kelia Moniz, 2012 ASP Women’s Longboard World Champion!

Roxy’s professional longboarder Kelia Moniz was crowned Women’s Longboard World Champion after winning the Swatch Girls Pro in Hainan, China. With her fluid, rail-to-rail surfing and classic hang tens, “Sister” had last year’s champ, Chelsea Williams combed in the finals. “I can’t believe how awesome it feels, I’m so thrilled to get the win…Wow, I’m the World Champion…that’s awesome!” Kelia won her first heat and hit the ground running in every round, showcasing finesse in even the toughest of conditions. The humble and selfless surfer is knows as “Sister” to her hometown on the South Shore of Oahu, and that’s what she’s become to the world at large. Sister’s biggest goal is to be a “positive influence in women’s surfing,” she says. “I want to help make women’s surfing bigger.”

Congratulate Sister by tagging your own #SisterMoments on Twitter and on Instagram (we all have a Sister that makes us Smile!) Don’t forget to tag @Roxy and @KeliaMoniz #ASPWorldLongboardChamp too!

A Day in the Life with Roxy Professional Longboarder Kelia Moniz

I’m Kelia Moniz, and I’m in Hainan, China for the Swatch Pro Longboard World Champs. This is the second consecutive year that this wonderful event in China will run. I’m so excited to head back there this year. The waves are so fun and not too many people know how to surf so the lineup is empty! The culture there is so rich, too. I love the welcoming community and amazing hospitality that makes the trip so special. It’s going be a good year, and I’m hoping for an even better result!!

Before I left, I ran through the Roxy shop to pick up some Holiday MUST HAVES! I’m loving this season’s fun color, prints, and textures. Just a little bit of everything to complete my winter wear wardrobe, and of course some pieces for my trip to China to keep me warm in style.

Here’s my list:

Moonstone Jacket
Elm Sweater
Autumn Fall Hat
Love Seeker Dress

Wish me luck!
Love,
Sister
