A Day in the Life of Cedar!
By Jennifer Andrews | Published February 1st, 2010A Day in the Life of…CREATIVE, COOL CEDAR:
ROXY’S AMAZING EVENT MANAGER
(Cedar on the North Shore of Oahu)
Job Title/Description of what you do: I am the Events Manager. I work in the Marketing department and manage all the events for the women’s brands at Quiksilver which include Roxy, Quiksilver Womens, Raisins, Radio Fiji, and Leilani. Events give me the opportunity to work on many different types of projects. I produce and manage all of our sporting events, such as surf contests and snowboarding contests (join us at Roxy Chicken Jam!), as well as any sort of product launch event, tour or movie premiere. In addition to this I also manage and produce all our photoshoots. This means finding and choosing models that represent the brands the best, and booking hair stylists, make-up artists, photographers, and cool locations.
Time worked at ROXY:
5 years…whoa, time flies!
Defining moment at Roxy:
In my five years here I’ve had many defining moments at Roxy, but the most memorable was during my first big event, the Roxy Pro Hawaii. I stood back and took everything in – the huge event set-up, all the people making it happen on site, all the best surfers in the world, and the perfect waves of the North Shore of Oahu. I thought to myself, “Wow, I made this happen.” To realize this was an amazing feeling which let me know I made the right choice in my career and made all the hard work worth it.

(Cedar with the crowd of Roxy Pro Hawaii behind)
Fav part of working for ROXY:
The people! I’ve made some of my best friends here. There are so many people here at Roxy who share my two main interests, fashion and surfing! Where else can you talk about the hottest new trends then catch a quick surf on your lunch break?
Â
Style Icon/Style Inspiration:
Wow, where to start?! Kate Moss and Sienna Miller are both amazing with their unique, sexy and effortless style. They definitely continue to inspire me year after year. Rachel Bilson seems to always be very well put together. Sarah Jessica Parker makes me want to wear even the craziest stuff because it looks so great on her!
Â
Go-To Fashion Item or Outfit right now:
Tights! I just got the most amazing BCBG Max Azria tights with huge cut-outs in them. I wear them with some sort of tunic and flat boots. I’m also loving all the fun tights Roxy makes, styled under my boyfriend shorts with motorcycle boots.
Â
Advice to Readers:
Style advice – Wear what you want and rock it with confidence! If you feel great and confident in what you are wearing chances are you look great too. Have fun with it!
Career Advice – Pick a career you have an interest in, not just something that you think is practical or will make you lots of money. If you are passionate about what you do the money will come. You spend most of your adult life at work so you want to enjoy it!
Â
Exciting Upcoming Projects:
There are a lot of exciting things coming up for me. I’m currently working on the Roxy Chicken Jam, which is a snowboarding event and concert in Mammoth, CA. Everyone should check it out and come snowboarding with me! (Visit: www.roxy.com/chickenjam-usa to check all the event details out) I’m also working on our global swimwear photoshoot and our Fall/Holiday photoshoots. Never a dull moment!

Caught! In the Act of Wearing Roxy…Britta!
By Jennifer Andrews | Published January 21st, 2010This is Britta. I am lucky enough to have my desk right by hers so we have become quite good friends. She is one of the cutest, sweetest people I have ever met (EVER!) and every time you talk with her, you have to resist the urge to hug her…because she is just so cute!
Anyway, another great thing about Britta is her awesome style. It’s very boho chic and she always has an element of suprise…either it be fringed sandals or the fun feather earrings she is wearing below. I am particularly obsessed with the way she is rocking the Pancake sweatshirt (on sale too so grab it fast!) on this rainy, rainy day. She looks so cozy and definitely hugable…per usual!

Sweatshirt: Roxy “Pancake”

Leggings: American Apparel

Daisy O’Dell’s Favorite Songs From 2009
By daisyodell | Published January 15th, 2010Disclaimer: Here are my favorite songs for the year right now. Tomorrow it may be different.
Extended Pretentious Disclaimer: This list is subject to change over the coming years, months, days, and hours. I have a very hard time committing to any sort of ‘best of’ list & am particularly indecisive when it comes to my favorite subject – music. It is not that I am not opinionated (I AM!), but simply that as my moods shift, so do my soundtrack requirements. A song that is is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE RIGHT NOW! may lose favor after several listens. Additionally, songs I am not mad about at first can grow on me. It often takes several years for a band to reach ‘favorite’ status. A hallowed spot in my record collection generally reserved only for David Bowie, Talking Heads, Leonard Cohen, Bjork, Jay-Z, The Smiths & several other musicians that have survived with me over the years. It’s not the size of the body of work (I LOVE Neutral Milk Hotel), but the fact that I keep coming back to these artists again & again & again… Tastes are subjective and my shifts are particularly dramatic. Since I am prone to change my mind, ‘best of’ list are complicated ordeals. That being said, after several weeks of contemplation, I am confident that I’ve narrowed down the list to the songs that (although the order may change) will remain at the top of my favorites list for 2009.
My Favorite Songs From 2009
1. Born On A Day The Sun Didn’t Rise
Black Moth Super Rainbow
Eating Us
The song was the soundtrack to my incredible summer. It gets the top spot for that reason alone.
2. My Girls
Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion
This song was the soundtrack to my winter. It was EVERYWHERE this year but I never seemed to get sick of it. I have about twelve remixes and am fairly sure that this will make almost every blogger top 10 list. Sometimes songs get popular simply because they are great or maybe we all believe the hype…

animalcollective
3. Stillness Is The Move
Dirty Projectors
Bitte Orca
Another super popular band. Another hit. They may be sickeningly trendy, but the Dirty Projectors are fantastic. There collaboration with David Bryne for “Dark Was The Night” almost made this list along with several other songs from Bitte Orca.
4. Breaking The Ice
Jeremy Jay
Slow Dance
My favorite song off one off my favorite albums of 2009. Jeremy Jay definitely takes the prize for the most ipod play this year.

5. Tonight
The Juan MacLean
The Future Will Come
I’ve had this album on rotation for what seems like forever. There are so many great tracks, but this is the one that I keep coming back to. I included it on my Space Disco For Lovers Mix and love how epic it is. The perfect end of the night song.

6. Hellhole Ratrace
Girls
Hellhole Ratrace
“and i dont want to cry my whole life through, i want to do some laughing too. so come on, come on, come on, come on, laugh with me. and i dont want to die without shaking up a leg or two, yeah, i want to do some dancing too. so come on, come on, come on, come on, dance with me.” .. ‘Nuf said.
7. Hysteric
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
It’s Blitz!
This song makes me feel like a teenager. I love how driving and emotional it is. It gets me every time. Period.

yeahyeahyeahs
8. New Theory
Washed Out
Life of Leisure EP
Beautiful.
9. You’re My Eyes (Disco Song) (Pilooski Remix)
Jarvis Cocker
Further Complications
One of my favorite lyricists pairs up with one of may favorite remixers. This song is perfect.

JarvisCocker
10. 1901
Phoenix
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
I’ve heard 1901 in a ton of commercials and on a bunch of TV shows. Nice work Phoenix. Collect those Benjamins (or Francs).
11. I Will Come Back
Holy Ghost!
Green Label Sound
After the success of ‘Hold On’ expectations have been high for Holy Ghost!. They produced a bunch of perfect remixes and really came through with IWCB. The Classixx remix is dope too.
12. Nadine (Memory Tapes Version)
Fool’s Gold
Fool’s Gold
I included this song on my ROXY Athletic Mix. I especially love how it grows and am a sucker for a ‘big finish’.
13. Primary Colours
The Horrors
Primary Colours
Some critics commented that The Horrors made a Jesus and Mary Chain or Cure album with Primary Colours. As a J&MC, Cure, and Horrors fan, I think that’s rad!

thehorrors
14. Blue Skies (The Twelves Remix)
Noah & The Whale
The First Days Of Spring
Blue Skies makes me happy. Been a while since I’ve gone through a breakup, but I imagine that this tune would help. The Twelves pump it up without losing the feel.
You can get this and several more great remixes at Living Ears:

15. Crystalised
The xx
xx
Another band that is so hip it hurts. I hear that their live show is lacking, but I still think these kids made one of the best albums of the year.
16. Two Weeks
Grizzly Bear
Veckatimest
I can’t really say anything that has not already been said. Great band. Great song.
17. Heavy Cross (Fred Falke Remix)
The Gossip
Music For Men
My friend Billy reminded me of this song today. Fred Falke scores my Moroder inspired dreams.
18. Your Disco Song
Vitalic
Disco Terminateur EP
Dark and throbbing & ‘made for me’.
19. Keep The Streets Empty For Me
Fever Ray
Fever Ray
Dark and lovely & made for me.
20. Empire State of Mind (feat. Alicia Keys)
Jay-Z
The Blueprint 3
This is not my favorite Jay-Z song (his body of work is far too awesome) BUT this is still one of my favorite songs of the year.
21. Tightrope
Yeasayer
Dark Was The Night
I think Dark Was The Night is one of the best compilations that I’ve ever heard. there were so many amazing collaborations and songs. This one stood out. More new music for Yeasayer is coming any day. Can’t wait!

22. Walkabout (Feat. Panda Bear)
Atlas Sound
Logos
Bradford Cox had this to say about the track in the lengthy press release for Logos:
“I toured for a period in Europe with Animal Collective, whose band dynamic was very inspirational to be around. On the bus, we often played improvised iPod games. We would take turns formulating a theme or unifying concept and then play three songs. The goal would be for everyone to try and figure out the theme. During one of these games, someone played ‘What Am I Going to Do’ by the Dovers. I was amazed at the hook– a weird organ thing with drums and electric bass. I mentioned to Noah [Lennox] that someone should really sample that riff. He agreed and he taught me a little about sampling and matching
up beats. This ended up as the collaborative effort ‘Walkabout’.”
Here’s the audio for the Dovers track on which “Walkabout” is based:

23. You’ll Disappear (Jacques Renault Remix)
The Phenomenal Handclap Band
15 to 20 / You’ll Disappear Remixes
I was torn between including ‘15-20′ or ‘You’ll Disapear’ on this list. Then I was torn between the Prins Thomas remix or this one. It is all very very good. I included this song on my ‘Disco Dancing Keeps Me Warm’ Mix.

24. 40 Day Dream
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros
From Below
Alex Ebert makes me want to buy what he is selling. I too want to join an eleven person musical commune and play tambourine with my lover.

A Day in the Life of Totally Talented Tevis
By Jennifer Andrews | Published January 5th, 2010I was so excited to talk with Tevis, our Fashion Art Director, because she has such a cool job and all of the creative images that you- our consumers and fans- see are a direct result of her (and her team’s) vision. Check her out below.
Job Title/Description of what you do:
My role as the Fashion Art Director is to basically manage the creative team. I oversee all the fashion related projects and make sure they are consistent with the overall creative direction for following brands: Roxy, Roxy Girl, Teenie Wahine, Raisins, Leilani, Radio Fiji, and Quiksilver Women’s.
It all starts with our team looking at the product for the season and developing a brand appropriate concept that we then apply to all seasonal creative. Once the concept is created and the direction is established, we put together our dream team to make it happen. The designers will start the layout and graphic design process while I work with the Marketing Department to organize the photoshoots: casting the models, choosing locations, stylists, wardrobe and photographers for shoots. The goal is to capture the concept exactly as we presented on film (or digitally now).
When all the graphics and photography are created, we then apply it to all our different consumer facing mediums. This includes advertising, pop, catalogs, websites, labels and packaging, product designs etc.
Time worked at ROXY:Â
10 months
Â
Defining moment at Roxy:
The first time we saw all the new Spring 10 imagery come together and be consistent for our sales meeting stage, linebooks, etc. it was pretty amazing. It was great to see how all the work the team had put together paid off and looked like it was going in the right direction. I felt that we had our creative all together and had established a modern look and feel to match the updated product.

Tevis's favorite image from the recent Spring photoshoot
Fav part of working for ROXY:
My most favorite part of working at Roxy is the great environment and awesome people. Working for a company like Quiksilver gives me a lot of room to explore many different types of projects from photoshoot direction to designing the look and feel for a headphone collaboration with JBL. It is never boring.
Â
Style Icon/Style Inspiration:
Katherine Hepburn (Classic and Forward), Cate Blanchett (A modern Classic), Zooey Deschanel (Quirky and Brunette and Pretty), Betty Catroux (A muse of Yves St. Laurent + Tom Ford – What more can I say?), Bianca Jager (Enviable 70’s Style – White Horse and all), Rachel Bilson (Modern Casual) , Vivienne Westwood (As an Artist not necessarily for basic styling. Always curious and pushing boundaries), Tavi Gevinson (Amazing eye and I can’t wait to see where she goes), Alexander McQueen (British Precision hits French Couture), Rachel Comey (Cute, simple, and totally nostalgic), Dries Van Noten (super clean and RTW), Anything to do with APC
Â
Go-To Fashion Outfit right now:
Boots, tights and comfy sweaters.
Â
Advice to Readers:Â
You can combine the things you love with your career in many different ways. Making sure you do will keep you motivated and dedicated. Whether it be design or accounting, there are many ways to challenge your interests and grow. Always strive to keep learning and absorb all that is around you because you never know where you inspiration will come from.
Â
Exciting Upcoming Projects:
Currently working on the new Fall/ Holiday 2010 concept direction for Roxy campaign, the Fall 2010 Roxy/JBL headphones, QSW Holiday Photoshoot Creative…
