Last year’s Roxy Let The Sea Set You Free finalist & India’s first female surfer Ishita Malaviya has already taught numerous young girls surfing at her surf school – The Shaka Surf Club. She’s taking her dreams of inspiring women in her community a step further and is currently busy filming for the documentary film project #BeyondTheSurface. The film is set to depict Ishita and a group of talented young women creating change and bringing hope to the local community and people around the world. Together the group is traveling and documenting the ways in which surfing, yoga, and ecological creativity and a bit of determination can spark hope for those suffering and without a voice.
Ishita is a daring young woman continuing to inspire us to dream big like she did during the Let the Sea Set You Free contest.
We cannot wait to see this film and hope that it inspire you to get out there are #DAREYOURSELF.
We set off to the beautiful island of Oahu to meet up with Roxy Let The Sea Set You Free winners Katie McLean, Emilie Layla Lovaine & Madison Setiawan for their second life-changing adventure.
Day 1 Recap: In day 1 of their adventure, Roxy team riders Kelia Moniz, Bruna Schmitz and Monyca Byrne-Wickey greeted Let The Sea Set You Free winners Katie McLean, Emilie Layla Lovaine and Madison Setiawan on the beaches of Waikiki with a traditional Hawaiian welcome, followed by special VIP movie screening of “The Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau”.
Day 2 Recap: With sunscreen and bikinis in tow the 3 winners went down to the sandy beaches of Waikiki to soak up some sun, SUP and do a little shopping. Can you guess what they stocked up on? Bikinis—an essential for their Hawaiian Island excursions!
Day 3 Recap: After a late-night arrival into the North Shore, the girls surfed Chuns Reef, enjoyed a delicious Acai Bowl prepared by Katie McLean and took part in the Eddie Aikau Opening Ceremony at Waimea Bay.
Day 4 Recap: On day 4 of their Hawaiian island adventures, the 3 winners and Roxy team headed to the Eastside of the North Shore where they were greeted by an outrigger canoe fully equipped with SUPs and a poke bowl lunch.
Day 5 Recap: On day 5, the Let The Sea Set You Free winners meet up with the Lisa Andersen Champ Camp crew with 4x World Champion Lisa Andersen and Roxy team rider Rosy Hodge. In between sessions Katie McLean lead the camp with a yoga lesson followed by a delicious Hawaiian BBQ lunch and ukulele session.
Day 6 Recap: From pastry tasting, jewelry making and sunset surfing…day 6 was filled with nothing short of an adventure. The day began with a trip to Ted’s bakery where the 3 winners enjoyed some of Hawaii’s best baked treats. After a delicious morning treat the group headed to Pipeline to meet up with Mia Russi of “Washed Up Jewelry” to make their own beach-inspired jewelry.
Day 7 Recap: Cloudy skies & choppy waters didn’t stop the Let The Sea Set You Free winners and Roxy team riders from setting out on an adventure on their last day in Oahu. They ended the day with a sunset surf—the perfect last night on the North Shore.
Between teaching classes at her local yoga studio, running her own art gallery and surfing the best swells, we caught up with Let the Sea Set You Free winner, Katie McLean at her humble abode in Santa Barbara, CA where we treated her to a box full of Winter’s best including new favorites: The Elm Sweater (perfectly cropped!) and the Golden Hill jacket (one of Kelia’s personal favs as well).
Steps away from the sand and the best local surf spot in Santa Barbara is the residence of Let the Sea Set You Free winner, Katie McLean. In a warehouse turned home Katie’s residence sits in the heart of Funkzone, where a creative community of shapers, artists and surfers reside. Between touring her art gallery, snacking on some of her home grown tomatoes from her rooftop garden and following her around to her favorite local spots, made us want to permanently crash on her couch.
As we listened to Katie’s latest travels to Mexico, we couldn’t help but notice the huge collection of vintage and thrift store finds. We were particularly drawn to her collection of vintage swimsuits hanging in her closet.
As we wandered around her home, admiring everything from a handmade dream catcher dangling from the skylight over her bed to the hues of pinks and turquoise that colored the walls, it’s no wonder Katie’s space inspires her as much as it inspires us.
Head downstairs to check out her gallery, Latitude—which is actually attached to her home! From murals to wine bottle artwork to her work as a graphic artist, you have to ask yourself, is there anything this girl can’t create? Did we mention there’s a surfing museum and Mermaid vintage shop right next door?
Stay tuned! Katie McLean will be blogging about her adventures in Mexico next.
Fall back in style with Roxy and shop the best of back to school. Go behind the scenes of Roxy Headquarters and get a full style haul with our Let The Sea Set You Free winner Katie McLean@KatieGypsyeye of Santa Barbara, CA.
What’d she pack for her adventures abroad? Tons of bikinis, hats for coverage, and some easy shorts (we love the sun skippers).
When shopping for back to school we suggest choosing colors and patterns that work well together and sticking to those. That way everything looks great together with little effort.
The next stop for the lucky Let The Sea Set You Free winners? …the beaches of Hawaii!
