Check out the amazing snippet from La Roux’s Bulletproof performance. La Roux took to Mammoth and performed at the 7th Annual Roxy Chicken Jam on March 26, 2011. Their set was 50 minutes long, and it was incredible…ENJOY!
The Roxy Chicken Jam brings some of the most best female athletes to Mammoth, CA every year to compete. This concert is just part of the extravaganza.
When Elly Jackson – lead singer of LaRoux most famous for her infectious hook on Bulletproof-walks into our greenroom, the first thing you notice is her all black dress-code. She wears layers of loosely fitting black tops, tailored pants, and slicks back her famous strawberry short crop in a way only SHE could make look this cool. Her jewelry is minimal, and still manages to look edgy. She plops down on the sofa in front of the bright lights to start our interview and right away it’s apparent that she’s friendly, sharp, and best of all – wickedly funny.
Since we know all of our Roxy fans would have loved to ask her questions, we invited everyone to post questions on our Facebook page. See below to see if your question made it & check out the video to see the interview!
Here are some excerpts:

Tannia Lilivette Apodaca, Patrícia Caldeira Bernardo, Chelsea Dixon: What is your Inspiration?
“Obviously we’re inspired by […] 80s music, 80s performers, 80s pop stars,…Joni Mitchell. It comes from a lot of different places; you pick up little things from different places and it rubs off on you but you’re maybe aware of it.”(more…)
Amateur And Professional Female Snowboarders Compete In The First Ever Roxy Powder Jam in Record-Breaking Snowfall Conditions at Mammoth Mountain, CA
Huntington Beach, CA (April 13, 2011)
The Seventh Annual Roxy Chicken Jam is the U.S.’s only all-women’s professional snowboard competition bringing the world’s best female athletes to Mammoth Mountain, CA.
Record snowfall at this year’s festivities resulted in the cancellation of the slopestyle event but in true Roxy form, that didn’t put a damper on the competition. Creative minds at Roxy put together a brand new competition format that would allow the riders to showcase the epic riding condition all over the mountain at Mammoth. The Roxy Powder Jam with cameras provided by GoPro took advantage of the 600+ inches of snowfall by tasking riders to capture the true joy of snowboarding through their eyes.
Teams consisted of three riders divided into invited pros and qualifying amateurs demonstrating their creativity and all-around ability to shred the entire mountain. The competitors were each asked to execute a line, a jib and an air in the video. After submission, the videos were judged on technical difficulty, execution and overall impression and creativity by the official Roxy Chicken Jam judging panel. The panel included Christian Sieverts, Mauricio Natario, MJ Bourgeois, and Jeff Brushie. In keeping with the spirit of Roxy, an extra award was given to the team who submitted the funniest bonus footage.

Skater, Olympic pro snowboarder, husband to Santigold, lead singer of Trouble Andrew, and 100% an artist, Trevor Andrews sat down with us at the Roxy Chicken Jam before his memorable performance. We got to ask him a couple of questions and learned that this soft-spoken yet assertive guy considers action-sports his community, wants to take up surfing and is a bit of a visionary when it comes to digital.

ROXY: We know you’re a skater, and an Olympic snowboarder. Is this why you always come back and perform at action-sports related events? Is that why you chose to perform at the Roxy Chicken Jam?
TA: Well, I don’t really feel like I am coming back, this is my community, you know what I mean? I grew up around snowboard culture and skate culture and obviously competed in it and took part in it in a big way. With the music it’s just a natural thing to stay in that community and that culture cause I live in it, you know what I mean? So the music is just kind of an extension of the culture and I feel like snowboard, skate, surf culture in general, like breathes so much art, you know?
ROXY: We read something that you’re also a bit of a graphic designer. Is there a career for you?
TA: Yeah for sure. I mean I have been doing graphic design for years now. I started really being involved with designing outerwear and stuff for Analog years ago and then just doing my own snowboard graphics and yeah. Any way that I can stay creative is just what I am about so, if I am not like making flyers for shows or writing music or making beats, or like designing a snowboard graphic or clothes or whatever. I just like to stay creative.

She surfs, she’s beautiful, she’s our quintessential Roxy girl…but she can’t snowboard…yet! Team Rider Kelia Moniz – and pro Longboarder – dropped by our 7th Annual Chicken Jam in Mammoth Mountain this year. We quickly found out that she had never snowboarded before! Of course, we had to put this natural athlete into Roxy Snow Gear and send her up the mountain for some amazing fresh powder. Never one to say no to a challenge, Kelia braved the slopes with an instructor to show her the way. Like a true champion, she got out there and learned to carve. Surprise surprise, the next day…she was ready to do it all over again!
Kelia sittin’ pretty before her very first snowboarding lesson.
The 2011 Chicken Jam is over and done with. Not exactly the weather we’d hoped for but I had so much fun to riding powder with the girls. The last night we went out to see Trouble and La Roux play up at Canyon lodge and ended up dancing the rest of the night away at The Hyde Lounge. Not a bad way to end an amazing weekend. Here are a few photos from some of the weekends adventures!

KELLY MARREN WINS HALFPIPE AT 2011 ROXY CHICKEN JAM DURING LARGEST SNOWFALL IN MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN HISTORY
Congrats to our Half-pipe winners! Despite difficult weather conditions, which turned out to be the largest snowfall in Mammoth Mountain history, some of the best female boarders in the world came to Mammoth mountain. The girls competed against one another showing off incredible talent. In just this past week alone, snowfall totaled between 12-15 feet!
Kelly Marren from Hiillsborough CA took the top spot in the halfpipe competition on Friday, March 25th winning the $15,000 prize purse. The event belonged to the newcomers as Leslie Glenn from Breckenridge CO and Chloe Kim, a ten-year-old phenom, from La Palma CA came in second and third.
Today was another snowy white out day at the Chicken Jam. So, we decided to turn the slopestyle into a team filming competition to see who could get the best air, line and jib. Not a bad idea but harder than you’d think given the blustery conditions. Chanelle Sladics and Celia Miller were in my crew so we cruised around filming each other with Go Pro’s getting creative with the wind and snow. Roxy’s going to announce the winners and post the videos on April 11th, so be on the look out for some crazy vids. I can’t wait to see what the other girls came up with!
When we weren’t battling the elements and filming all sorts of fun stuff, we spent the rest of the time cruising around in our spirit hoods, these things are amazing! Check me out I’m a snow leopard battling a lobster claw!
