ROXY Collaborates on Exclusive Midnight Swim Collection with LA Artist Niki Livingston

Lookout & Wonderland x ROXY

If you ask us, one-of-a-kind swim pieces, DIY crafts, tunes by DJ Love Fingers and artisanal cocktails are the perfect way to wrap up a busy work week and spend a Saturday evening.

Last month, Lookout & Wonderland’s founding artist Niki Livingston showcased her capsule collection of 100 one-of-a-kind, organic indigo-dyed bathing suits that were created in collaboration with Roxy swim designers.

We hosted a launch party at Shelter Half, a unique artisan marketplace in Los Angeles, to celebrate the collaboration complete with an indigo dye workshop, live music and craft cocktails.

The Midnight Swim collection blends shades of shadowy indigo – the perfect compliment for endless summer days and nights spent at the beach. We enjoyed a runway presentation of the new line and then snacked, danced and sipped on cocktails while having fun creating our own DIY indigo-dyed mobiles. Hemp string, dyed pieces of canvas and some sticks are all you need!

We spoke with Cynthia Son, a ROXY designer to get the inside scoop behind the Lookout & Wonderland x ROXY collaboration.

ROXY: What was the inspiration behind the collaboration?

Cynthia: The inspiration behind Midnight Swim was sparked from a concept from our swim designer Breanna Marston for our upcoming swim line. The underlying themes were a late night swim that evokes blue & black indigo inky patterns that feel like a summer night! Based on the beautiful hand dyed shibori technique used by Niki Livingston, we knew that her dynamic style mixed with indigo dyed patterns would be the perfect collaboration for ROXY!

ROXY: Will we see more collaborations like this for ROXY Swim in the future? Will indigo dyed product be available in larger quantities in the future?

Cynthia: For now the collection is a one-of-a-kind run of 100 pieces that will only be available  exclusively at Shelter Half. There are a couple upcoming collaborations we’re pretty excited about! Stay tuned to see what we’re planning for Spring 2015!

ROXY: We know what indigo is a hot trend right now. What other trends do you see taking off with swimwear in the next few months?

Cynthia: Indigo is definitely a BIG trend right now. Our design team is  currently focusing on experimenting with different textures, space dyed fabrics, cut outs & seamless details.

Roxy and Quiksilver Celebrate International Surfing Day with Kind Surf

On Friday, June 20th, Roxy and Quiksilver teamed up with Kind Surf to host a beach day for disadvantaged kids in Valencia, Spain at Port Saplaya beach who would otherwise not have had an opportunity to enjoy International Surfing Day.

International Surfing Day with Kind Surf

Kind Surf is an international non-profit organization that helps disadvantaged kids through the practice of surfing and environmental education.  It was founded by Almudena Fernandez, an international model, eco-activist and OCEANA Ambassador who is passionate about sustainability and preserving the earth’s natural resources for generations to come.

The ISD celebration started at 4pm on Friday 20 June with 15 kids in disadvantaged situations, consisting of two different groups and a dedicated Kind Surf instructor for each participant:

– 8 kids from Adisto Fundation, which help those with Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Down’s Syndrome
– 7 kids from NovaVida Fundation, helping those at risk of social exclusion
– 12 Kind Surf members, 5 volunteers, and Quiksilver team rider Aritz Aranburu

The Kind Surf team started the day off with an environmental class, teaching the importance of respecting all of the ocean’s creatures and keeping the beach clean from plastics and trash.  After a quick beach clean-up, the kids warmed up for their intro surf sessions.

The conditions were perfect for some fun waves! After lots of laughs and some happy tears, the day ended with a group photo and new Kind Surf tee shirts for all of the kids.

In addition to the activity hosted in Spain, Roxy and Quiksilver donated a  portion of sales from every boardshort and swim piece bought on Roxy.com and Quiksilver.com worldwide on International Surfing Day as an additional contribution to Kind Surf. This not only helped make a special day a reality for the 15 kids in attendance, but will help ensure others can enjoy special events like this in the future as well.

Meet the YKPA Kids of Bali, and be inspired by their spirit

YKPA Kids Bali

Giving back and getting involved with the local community during Bali’s Big Eco Weekend has been an incredible experience! Even better, connecting with the communities we visit is always the icing on the cake.

Inspired to continue giving back to the Bali community, we discovered the story of YKPA kids through some of the items they sell locally. YKPA “Yayasan Kasih Peduli Anak” is making an impact by offering opportunities, giving loving support, education, health care, and skills for disadvantaged children.

Kelia Moniz, Rosy Hodge, Bruna Schmitz, LeeAnn Curren and Sally Fitzgibbons spent an afternoon getting to know the kids and learning about the organization.

As we toured the home, a group of kids were practicing some of their dancing. Initially shy, they showed us their moves- a beautiful mix of contemporary and traditional Balinese dancing.

YKPA Kids Bali

It wasn’t long before they were pulling the Roxy team up for a few lessons!

Laughing at our lack of rhythm for the Balinese style, the kids took over the dance floor with another choreographed performance.

With the dance lessons over, the kids took us out into their courtyard. Communication wasn’t easy with the language barrier but laughter and a soccer ball were the perfect tools for translation.

YKPA Kids Bali

It was a special afternoon, to spend time with the children who have so little when it comes to possessions but so much when it comes to passion and spirit.  We enjoyed all of the laughter we shared and won’t forget this day in Bali.

Bali’s Big Eco Weekend: Educating, Protecting & Conserving Bali’s Beaches…One Sea Turtle at a Time!

Roxy and Quiksilver team riders and legends kicked off Bali’s Big Eco Weekend with ateam signing at Legian Beach. A huge crowd gathered for the chance to meet their heroes and grab an autograph and a photo or two. The team loved sharing the mutual stoke from the fans! Plenty of smiles all round!

Bali Big Eco Weekend 2014

Getting ready for the beach clean up, we rolled up our sleeves and joined the dedicated clean up crew of local community members and visitors to help clean up Legian Beach.

With non-degradable waste as the by-product of not just the local environment, but also from the rapidly growing population of Indonesia, raising awareness of the alarming issue was the driving force of the weekend.

Bali Big Eco Weekend 2014

Despite picking up trash, we still managed to look stylish, as clearly demonstrated by Bruna!

As the cleanup efforts were tallied, we joined the crowd and headed to the presentation. We were welcomed by a traditional band and beautiful Balinese dancers, the excitement drawing people in as they came in from the surf. Given a brief presentation of the initiatives beginnings, we all pledged to continue the clean up efforts in Bali and to take the message home to share with others.

As the formalities finished up, the Bali Sea Turtle Society announced it was time for the turtle release! Over 1,000 hatchlings were ready to be released into the ocean.

Rosy, Sally, Kelia and Bruna each gave their turtles a few words of encouragement before setting them off into the wild, hoping they would not only survive but come back to Bali’s beaches to mate in the future.

It was a great moment to share as we watched the tiny turtles make their way towards the water then swept into the ocean to begin their new life!

Bali Big Eco Weekend 2014

As the day drew to a close, competitors of the Uluwatu Challenge were invited to partake in a Balinese Hindu ceremony.

Dressed in traditional sarongs, we took our place on the sand as the blessing was given by the local temple priest. Showered with sacred water and blessed with the customary rice placed on the forehead for good fortune, we watched the sun set over the ocean.

Get Ready for Bali’s Big Eco Weekend!

We believe that every ROXY woman wants to do her part to help protect and care for the environment on and off the beach. The Quiksilver and ROXY family has teamed up with Coca-Cola and Garuda International to host a weekend dedicated to educating the public about the environmental challenges facing Bali and how we can work together globally to protect our beaches both near and far.

Bali Big Eco Weekend

This year, Bali’s Big Eco weekend will be held at Legian beach with environmental and beach activities for everyone.  Since 2008, the Bali beach clean-up program has employed a crew of 75 locals who help keep Bali’s beaches clean everyday—from the Kuta, Kedonganan, Jimbaran, Seminyak, and Legian beaches. Due to the efforts of volunteers and the local community, over 24 million tons of trash has been collected and 80,000 sea turtle eggs have been protected!

Bali Big Eco Weekend

Our team riders Sally Fitzgibbons, Kelia Moniz, Bruna Schmitz and Rosy Hodge will be joining us in Bali, helping us clean up the beaches and educating the public about the environmental challenges facing Bali.

Tune in to Facebook, Twitter & Instagram this weekend to see what we’re doing each day and what you can do to help keep Bali’s beaches clean! #KeepBaliClean

ROXY Outdoor Fitness: Sayulita, Mexico with Let The Sea Set You Free winner Katie McLean

Roxy #LetTheSeaSetYouFree winner & #ROXYOutdoorFitness ambassador Katie McLean

We caught up with Let The Sea Set You Free winner and Roxy Outdoor Fitness ambassador after her recent trip back down to beautiful Sayulita, Mexico. She went down south to continue her community work with Project Save Our Surf and attend the Roxy Stand Up Paddle in her and Longboard competition where she met up with fellow team riders Izzi Gomez, Vanina Walsh and Chloe Calmon and Jen Smith.

In Katie’s words:

Although we were all of different ages, from different places, and with different ways of surfing from shortboarding to longboarding to SUPing, we all immediately clicked. As soon as we anchored at the surf spot Burros, all in our Roxy bikinis, we jumped out of the boat into the pool warm water and paddled into the line up. Our local female water photographer flippered behind us capturing our snaps and smiles on every wave. After we sat by the crystal clear waters and stuffed ourselves with fresh shrimp ceviche, guacamole, and chips. Nothing tops Mexican food post-surf, except that post-scarfing siesta. Sleepily we drove back to Sayulita, stopping in San Pancho for a quick surf check and street vendor shopping. Then we performed a minor Cola-Loca surgery to the fin cut on my ankle (AKA we super glued it shut!).

The next day, I was reunited with Coste Verde International Elementary School. I was stoked to see my mural, students from last summer, and the progress the school had made with Project Save Our Surf’s contributions. We had blast reading to them from the books that PSOS brought to donate. After that the school, PSOS crew and I, built a playground by reusing old tires. To step it up from observation to interaction, provides a whole other level of learning and experience.

Roxy #LetTheSeaSetYouFree winner & #ROXYOutdoorFitness ambassador Katie McLean

After a long, rewarding day at the school, I raced off to join the Roxy girls for some autograph signings at Puerto Vallarta’s two Roxy stores. We were then let loose to raid the store and shop till we dropped, literally. We all passed out on the hour drive back to Sayulita and barely made it to the PSOS benefit dinner at a beautiful estate tucked away on a private beach past the point.

In the morning, we donned our favorite new Roxy Outdoor Fitness swimsuits for a shoot at the beach cabanas. We hung in hammocks, sipped from fresh coconuts, and sat in the sand while snapping shots. After, I walked down to the surf contest to participate in a PSOS beach cleanup. I shared a trash bag with a few little Roxy-loving surfer girls I had met at the school last summer. It was awesome connecting with the kids and showing them what a difference we could make.

Let The Sea Set You Free: Katie McLean takes a trip to Mexico

Roxy Let The Sea Set You Free Americas Winner, Katie McLean, recently became an Ambassador for Project Save Our Surf. In August she traveled to Sayulita, Mexico to paint a mural at Coste Verde International Elementary School, clean the coast, and teach local girls surfing, yoga, and environmental stewardship. Check out her trip!

In August, I traveled to Sayulita, Mexico for PSOS to paint a mural at Coste Verde International Elementary School, clean the beach and teach little local girls surfing, yoga, and environmental stewardship. My heart flutters with anticipation and the wonder of unknown lands. My 3-day, 5ft Mexico mural created for Project Save Our Surf called Sayulita Sea Saint: a blue-haired sea saint with an Aztec-inspired halo of ocean animals.

I began volunteering for Project Save Our Surf in July by putting on art projects for little girls to do at the beach clean-up surf days. Preparing my first art project for Project Wahine in Goleta, Ca, I strung and glued tons pearls in shells for them to paint.
