Haut Surf Shop throwback from our Santa Cruz photo shoot

Haut Surf Shop throwback from our ROXY Santa Cruz photo shoot

Today we’re throwing it back to our ROXY Fall shoot in Santa Cruz, California, where stands HAUT Surfboard Shop and where we scored our newest ride (hang on we’ll tell you more about our fancy board shortly).

Consequentially, HAUT is a throwback in itself, making its home in a one-story old building with a graveled driveway dating back to 1969.  Its quintessential surf charm cannot be mistaken…fin adorned windows, resin filled rooms, plastered walls chronicling tales of times past, and of course, Doug, the shop’s main man and legendary west-coast shaper, who brought out one of his mini-gun designs to make a special board for the girls.

Our new board is perfect for bigger, hollower waves that we see in CA in the Fall and now is part of our collection for road trips and secrets spots around the world.

Enjoy a glimpse into Haut Surf Shop! Also, Doug wanted us to tell you to follow HAUT’s Facebook page!

Beach braids are a thing of envy, especially when you can master them like the ladies of Paul Mitchell.

Luckily for us, the entire team was on hand at the Roxy Waikiki Classic to show us that fish and tails aren’t just synonymous with the water, and a little luck with your locks is easy with some Paul Mitchell SUN (especially the Sun Shield Conditioning Spray).

Watch this short how-to and have fun creating your own beachy-hair-do while protecting it from the sun!

Katie McLean dares herself and takes her next adventure to El Salvador

Roxy's Katie McLean #LetTheSeaSetYouFree

A self proclaimed ‘connoisseur of right point breaks’, likely embedded in Katie McLean by her birthplace, Santa Barbara, Ca., had her eyeing El Salvador’s similar surf setup all her life. On June 1st (Katie’s birthday!) she fueled her constant wanderlust and finally made the journey to what the natives call Cuscatlán, The Land of Jewels.

early morning stretches for #ROXYOutdoorFitness ambassador Katie McLean in El Salvador

Our Roxy Let The Sea Set You Free winner struck gold, scoring the opening south swell of the summer. For two weeks, 4 boys, 4 girls, and I traveled between the pristine, tropical East of Las Flores and the ‘Wild West’ of La Libertad where the city sits right on the shore.

Katie surfed at the edge of a floral jungle resting on a sparkling black sand beach, trekked to the opening of an untouched valley covered with cows, barefooted through a city to surf an urchin-infested rocky point peeling off a cemetery, and boated to an empty barreling break up the immaculate coast.

El Salvador’s air was hot, humid, and electric and the water was warmer than any pool. She basically lived in here Roxy bikinis and Roxy Outdoor Fitness shorts and sports bras. While traveling, I keep up my fitness routine by spending just 10 minutes a day doing pilates and yoga.

#ROXYOutdoorFitness ambassador Katie McLean loves trail running in El Salvador

As a huge fan of trail running, Katie reveled at the chance to run through the lush terrains of Central America. She ran through thundering downpours in a rainforest blooming with mangoes to waterfalls where they leapt off into cascading swimming pools.

An adventure wouldn’t be complete without seeing some sights, doing some shopping, and learning about the local culture. The group explored tiny town squares, never-ending tent markets, beachfront huts, and piers selling shrimp ceviche and buckets of fresh caught fish.

Roxy's Katie McLean taes a daring adventure to El Salvador #DAREYOURSELF #LetTheSeaSetYouFree

Only 20 years out of a brutal civil war, a country plagued by poverty, gang violence, and drastic natural disasters, El Salvador’s history of danger kept Katie on my toes.

Katie McLean dares herself and immerses herself in El Salvador's rich culture #DAREYOURSELF

Katie’s heart was opened by the kindness of the country’s people; They were intrigued by visitors and excited to show their waves, way of life, and most importantly, Pupusas (El Salvador’s signature dish).

Katie McLean puts her own spin on the classic El Salvadorian dish, Pupusas! #LetTheSeaSetYouFree

During the last lightning-filled nights and stormy days, Katie drew in her journal and helped a local artist paint a mural at AST Surf Hotel. Katie believes ‘Connecting and sharing your passions wherever you go is what makes travel memorable.’

In Katie’s words, “I dared myself to explore El Salvador’s untamed beauty, and was rewarded. I’ve returned home refreshed, inspired, and ready for my next adventure.” #DAREYOURSELF

ROXY Outdoor Fitness: Sayulita, Mexico with Let The Sea Set You Free winner Katie McLean

Roxy #LetTheSeaSetYouFree winner & #ROXYOutdoorFitness ambassador Katie McLean

We caught up with Let The Sea Set You Free winner and Roxy Outdoor Fitness ambassador after her recent trip back down to beautiful Sayulita, Mexico. She went down south to continue her community work with Project Save Our Surf and attend the Roxy Stand Up Paddle in her and Longboard competition where she met up with fellow team riders Izzi Gomez, Vanina Walsh and Chloe Calmon and Jen Smith.

In Katie’s words:

Although we were all of different ages, from different places, and with different ways of surfing from shortboarding to longboarding to SUPing, we all immediately clicked. As soon as we anchored at the surf spot Burros, all in our Roxy bikinis, we jumped out of the boat into the pool warm water and paddled into the line up. Our local female water photographer flippered behind us capturing our snaps and smiles on every wave. After we sat by the crystal clear waters and stuffed ourselves with fresh shrimp ceviche, guacamole, and chips. Nothing tops Mexican food post-surf, except that post-scarfing siesta. Sleepily we drove back to Sayulita, stopping in San Pancho for a quick surf check and street vendor shopping. Then we performed a minor Cola-Loca surgery to the fin cut on my ankle (AKA we super glued it shut!).

The next day, I was reunited with Coste Verde International Elementary School. I was stoked to see my mural, students from last summer, and the progress the school had made with Project Save Our Surf’s contributions. We had blast reading to them from the books that PSOS brought to donate. After that the school, PSOS crew and I, built a playground by reusing old tires. To step it up from observation to interaction, provides a whole other level of learning and experience.

After a long, rewarding day at the school, I raced off to join the Roxy girls for some autograph signings at Puerto Vallarta’s two Roxy stores. We were then let loose to raid the store and shop till we dropped, literally. We all passed out on the hour drive back to Sayulita and barely made it to the PSOS benefit dinner at a beautiful estate tucked away on a private beach past the point.

In the morning, we donned our favorite new Roxy Outdoor Fitness swimsuits for a shoot at the beach cabanas. We hung in hammocks, sipped from fresh coconuts, and sat in the sand while snapping shots. After, I walked down to the surf contest to participate in a PSOS beach cleanup. I shared a trash bag with a few little Roxy-loving surfer girls I had met at the school last summer. It was awesome connecting with the kids and showing them what a difference we could make.

Let The Sea Set You Free: Katie McLean takes a trip to Mexico

Roxy Let The Sea Set You Free Americas Winner, Katie McLean, recently became an Ambassador for Project Save Our Surf. In August she traveled to Sayulita, Mexico to paint a mural at Coste Verde International Elementary School, clean the coast, and teach local girls surfing, yoga, and environmental stewardship. Check out her trip!

In August, I traveled to Sayulita, Mexico for PSOS to paint a mural at Coste Verde International Elementary School, clean the beach and teach little local girls surfing, yoga, and environmental stewardship. My heart flutters with anticipation and the wonder of unknown lands. My 3-day, 5ft Mexico mural created for Project Save Our Surf called Sayulita Sea Saint: a blue-haired sea saint with an Aztec-inspired halo of ocean animals.

I began volunteering for Project Save Our Surf in July by putting on art projects for little girls to do at the beach clean-up surf days. Preparing my first art project for Project Wahine in Goleta, Ca, I strung and glued tons pearls in shells for them to paint.

Catalog Countdown: National Forest

The Winter catalog makes its online debut tomorrow and in grand anticipation we’re pulling back the curtains to give our readers some insight into the collaborative graphic genius behind our 2012/13 Roxy snowboards.

As much as we’d like to say they’re just really cool boards (because they are), there’s a whole lot more heart, thought, tech and creative energy that goes into the boards that are ecologically handcrafted in the USA at the Mervin Factory in Sequim, WA. Today we’re giving you a brief glimpse into the collaboration between Roxy’s own designer Yuhei K., Kyre M., Roxy team riders (including Kjersti Buaas pictured below), and Thomas Sullivan and the rest of the design crew from the LA based design firm National Forest.

We caught up with National Forest and asked them all the tough questions.

As an artist, how important do you think a board’s graphic is, and why?
National Forest: A great graphic can be very important. Snowboarding is about expression, having fun, and feeling great. Being stoked about the look of your whip is a good step in the right direction.

NF designed the 12/13 Roxy snowboard line, can you briefly walk us through the process?
National Forest: Sure thing. The process begins with a lot of “What if we did this?” conversations. We dig up favorite books, posters, pop culture references, old photos, etc., and pool them together for a big mind- -meld of intuitive concepting. We formulate abstract ideas and begin drawing, setting type, or designing with the conversations, references, and specific snowboards in mind. In the beginning we make intuitive marks; then we step back and ask ourselves, “Where is this going? Is this new? Is it good?” We’ve found that this is the best path to create a new vibe that we know we want but can’t quite describe. Our rule of thumb is if we’re uncomfortable with an image it’s good because it’s new and uncharted. As the images take form we meet with Roxy and the snowboarding team, via our friends at Mervin to discuss the progress and invite them to add their contributions to the pool of ideas. We collectively decide which creative paths to follow and then fine- – tune the images. We tweak and refine until the pictures are done and ready to send off to the factory. We all meet at Mervin HQ, located in Sequim, WA (near Seattle), for one final multi-day press check followed by high-fives and beers.

Where do you get your inspiration for the graphics? Do the Roxy team riders contribute inspiration?
National Forest: It is important that each design has a heartfelt expression at its core. We think this level of sharing, risky as it may be, is what allows visuals to resonate deeply and communicate with other folks. These expressions come from the Roxy team, outside artists, or our personal experiences.

Do you think a good board graphic can make you ride better or make your day better, and why?
National Forest: Yes ma’am! I’m stoked on my current set-up and as lame as it may sound, when I feel cool, I ride cool. If you roll to the disco knowing your steez is just right you’re going to strut like a king, look girls straight in the eye, and crush it on the dance floor. The same goes for a day on the mountain.

NF works on a lot of very impressive, national and international campaigns for big brands, are there any similarities in how you approach a national campaign and how you approach designing a snowboard line?
National Forest: There sure are. We work on a lot of self-initiated projects and, as you mention, some big global ones. With all of our projects, big and small, we try to share the same message: “It’s important to experience and share joy, it is important to find time to be in the present, and we can collectively create a ‘cool’ that everyone is invited to enjoy.” We find the message important to remember in our personal lives and are excited when we can help steer big companies (Roxy included) to spread the word.

A few of the 2012/13 designs feature work from prominent artists, can you tell us a little bit about the artists and why you chose them?
National Forest: Sure. There are three contributing artists who collaborated with NF on the 2012/13 line. Two of the artists, Imants Tillers and Michael Nelson Jagamara, are friends of Torah Bright, a shredder on the Roxy Snow team. Torah suggested the two collaborate to create the key image for her signature Eminence C2 BTX board. Thomas, one of the crew here at NF, suggested we reach out to Theo Altenberg for a collaboration on the Banana Smoothie. Theo is a great German contemporary artist who has been making amazing work since the ’70s. He’s also a cool-ass dude.

Do you have a favorite board from the 2012/13 collection and why?
National Forest: I dig the Inspire. I like the simple irony of a rainforest jungle scene with rainbows and tropical birds slashing through the snow. It’s a silly notion but I appreciate the gag. Can you get me one in a men’s 162 wide?

Have any of National Forest’s employees ridden a Roxy snowboard?
National Forest: Not yet. But I’m happy to say we have a new shredder with us who will surely be taking some turns on a Roxy whip come first snow.

Missed our last two countdown posts? Sneak a peek at the catalog press check and get your winter wardrobe fix with the girls from Peepshow Films.

Team Rider Jen Smith Shaping for International Surfing Day

As we are fast approaching International Surfing Day on June 20th, team rider Jen Smith, who happens to be one of the most down to earth surfers and skateboarders around, mentioned she was getting ready to shape a surfboard and let’s just say, we were nothing short of speechless after seeing what she came up with…

When Jen and photographer Drew Martin, of Drew Martin Photography teamed up, they captured what surfing is all about; It’s those creative moments shared both in and out of the water and this is where it all starts!

In Jen’s own words, “Surfing is one of my greatest passions and I’ve been riding waves for about 19 years (well over half of my life). recently I picked up a planer ad started shaping boards. It’s an amazing challenge and a new way of exploring ad expressing my love for the ocean. It’s all about finding the board you want to make within the blank you are starting with. For this project, I decide to make a board for international go surfing day. What better way to celebrate go surfing day than to make a new board to slide across a wave on.”

We hope you all enjoy watching this video of Jen shaping a one-of-a-kind surfboard and inspires you to get a little creative (in or out of the water) on International Surfing Day.
