Welcome to Tahiti Summer 2013 #DAREYOURSELF

It’s Summer…time to heat things up in French Polynesian fashion! Tahiti called and your wave is waiting, so let’s ride (we did!).

The Roxy team including Sally Fitzgibbons, Kelia Moniz, LeeAnn Curren, Monyca Byrne Wickey, Justin Mauvin, and Bruna Schmitz boarded an easy 8 hour plane flight on Air Tahiti Nui from LAX and arrived to a warm flower-filled welcome at the Intercontinental Resort in French Polynesia (PS we can’t wait to show you our Polynesian Lei DIY vid).

What we woke up to was nothing short of a Roxy dream. We quickly boarded a boat and drifted off to the secluded island of Moorea, with bikinis in tow and sandals in hand, we got ourselves ready for a swim with some friends. After that, we dove right in with a lagoon full of stingrays (Kelia’s little buds), sharks and other sea friends that were welcoming and waiting.  Fast forward and we’re living on Tahiti Yacht catamarans a short ride away from one of the biggest and best offshore breaks in the world – Teahupoo. In true Polynesian fashion, we got the lay of the land with Raimana (aka the mayor of Tahiti) who showed us the best breaks, pineapple groves, sunset points, coral reefs, and most delicious Poisson Cru in town (yum!).

This is the Roxy way of life and we’re just starting to heat things up…Here’s some of our favorite pics from the beautiful Polynesian Island. #DAREYOURSELF to keep dreaming big…

The Roxy Body Slam by Sally Fitzgibbons

Roxy team rider Sally Fitzgibbons and Laura Enever earned double interferences in Round 3 of the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.
Both girls saw potentially high scores as they vied for position and ended up in a collision instead, sending them both to Round 4 heats for their last chance at a Quarterfinal slot, but only Sally advanced #GOSally. Watch Sally’s upcoming semifinal heat live here.

Cool Down

Take a break in the shade of Lilikoi Garden Cafe’s caravan with fruit juice and homemade ice cream.

Carry On

Shop the markets near Gallieni Quay ferry dock in downtown Papeete.

Take It In

Buy a ukelele. Eat firifiri doughnuts. Hug a manta ray. Charter a private cruise aboard a modern sailing catamaran with Tahiti Yacht Charter out of Raiatea.

Don’t Miss Out

Throw a motu picnic, French Polynesian’s answer to the preppy clambake.

Maldives Uncovered with Stylist Tal Kohen

How did the trip to Maldives inspire your own personal wardrobe or styling for the shoot?
The designers at Roxy do such an amazing job bringing out the personalities of their surfers and customers in their clothes. The Maldives was the perfect location to compliment the Roxy Spring ’13 collection. The vivd colors and fun patterns in the pieces worked great with the culturally rich and bright, beautiful surroundings. To complete the look and achieve the ultimate Roxy girl vibe, I incorporated bold colored and organic jewelry.

Where do you get your best inspiration from as a stylist?
Besides movies, television, fashion books, and magazines, my strongest inspiration comes from the people who surround me in the places I call home: New York City and Los Angeles. NYC is home to some of the most unique, creative, and fashionable people, while LA’s relaxed warm weather breeds more comfortable, confident, and free-spirited people.

How long have you been styling and how did you get into it?
I’ve been styling professionally for about 7 years now, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve been styling my family and friends.
I was born and raised on the west coast, but I always knew I wanted to live in New York, the fashion capital. After graduating college, I decided to make the move. I got very lucky early on and was given the opportunity to assist a stylist on a commercial. She took a chance on me given that I had no real professional styling experience of my own. After that, I was hooked. Through contacts and acquaintances, I went on to style TV shows and photo shoots, and within a short time, went off on my own.

What was your most memorable moment while styling the surfers in the Maldives?
The Roxy girls are pure fun – there is never a dull moment. Some of my most memorable Maldives moments are watching Kelia [Moniz]and Kassia [Meador] surf wearing the saltwater chinos, Bruna [Schmitz] swaying a little boat back and forth almost tipping it over, and Monyca [Byrne-Wickey] and Sally [Fitzgibbons] dancing at the bow on our way to a remote sand island. Oh and of course the day all the girls decided to jump off the top level of our 4 story boat into the water. Sorry, there are just too many, I couldn’t give you just one moment…

Any tricks of the trade that every girl should know?
Besides investing in fashion staples such as jeans, the perfect T, the “go with everything” bag…the best and most important thing to wear is confidence. If you feel great, you look great.

If you weren’t styling…what would you dare to be doing?
I love food and I love traveling. If I wasn’t a stylist, I would absolutely love to be a traveling food critic!

Thanks to Tal Kohen for answering our ‘need-to-knows’ and to all the girls looking to get a little inspiration in their own lives, remember to dream big and #DAREYOURSELF everyday. See all of Tal’s top picks for Spring!

Roxy Outdoor Fitness: Get out there Rain or Shine

Get out there, rain or shine. Here’s our favorite Roxy Athlete recommended workouts and a post-workout treat to get outside and enjoy the day, no matter what the weather:

1. Climbing under a roof when it’s raining so I can see the waterfalls – Roxy Outdoor Fitness Rock Climber, Sierra Blair-Coyle.

2. Surfing in the rain is the best because it’s less crowded and I get to use my new Roxy Outdoor Fitness wetsuits. I love breaking out the new suits each season – Roxy Pro Surfer, Rosy Hodge

3. SUP Yoga in the rain to be completely surrounded by water above and beneath – Roxy Outdoor Fitness Athlete, SUP Yoga instructor and owner of Paddle into Fitness, Gillian Gibree

4. Downwind paddling in the rain to feel the drops against my back. – Gillian Gibree

5. Running on the street after a good rain, I love the smell of rain on asphalt – Pro Surfer, Sally Fitzgibbons

6. Mountain biking in the rain because the dirt gets sticky and smooth.  I can hold my line better in critical turns – Roxy Outdoor Fitness Mountain Biker, Karin Kendrick

After your wintery workout, recover and warm up with our all-natural Ginger Mint Tea:

- Grab a handful of fresh mint leaves. Mint is one of the oldest and most popular herbs grown around the world. Its sweet flavor and cooling after sensation also soothes and cleanses the digestive tract, eliminates toxins, reduces blemishes, and keeps your breath nice and fresh!

- Grate about a teaspoon of fresh ginger. From the ancient Chinese to the Romans, ginger has been used for thousands of years to aid digestion and act as an anti-inflammatory. Perfect for a post-workout zing! Try a bath soak with ginger for those achy muscles, cramp prevention, and to soothe your cranky winter skin.

- Just a spoonful of honey…The benefits of honey go beyond its blissfully sweet taste. Honey is known for instantly boosting performance, endurance, and reducing muscle fatigue. Its also a perfect “pick-me-up on a spoon” when you pack it for that extra mile!

- Combine all the ingredients and boil in a full tea kettle.

- Drink hot after a chilly workout, or ice it for refreshing hydration. Feel free to add sliced lemon for extra tang! (Lemons are perfect for that immunity boost in the winter, and cleanse the liver for a great detox boost!

Maldives Surf Trip with Roxy

Playful right-handers and crystal-clear waters—the Maldives almost seems like they were made for our Roxy Surf Team. The tropical paradise has three key surfing zones spanning over 300 miles—that’s 300 miles of pristine point breaks as well as colorful, shallow reefs. Whether it was Sally Fitz slashing a front-hand right, or Kassia Meador dancing on her longboard, the Roxy girls were chasing dreams and catching waves just in time when spring fever set in. They grabbed their spring bikinis for single-fin cruises and reef explorations. Check out a snapshot of their Maldivian adventures.
