K. Meador Wetsuits: For All You Fancy Footwork Fanatics

Look Groovy, Feel Rad and Shred Hot – That basically sums up the Kassia Meador wetsuit collection, designed by Kassia Meador with fit, form and fashion in mind, and more importantly designed by Kassia for women and fancy footwork fanatics like her everywhere. Between the neoprene, neon, and cuts, we’re sure that these are more than just your average surfing suit. We dig it – don’t you?

For more behind the wetsuits, we suggest you check out Kassia’s slideshow where she details the inspiration behind her 4th wetsuit collection for women, her drawings, designs, and the color inspiration behind the suits.

Here’s a snapshot taken this morning of USA Olympian Lolo Jones getting ready to paddle out in her K.Meador wetsuits. We’ve got a major crush!

Want even more? We’ve been obsessing over our Pinterest boards and have dedicated an entire board to all things Kassia. Trust us, there’s plenty to pin if you combine her wetsuits, her fancy footwork in the water, photography and friends. Get on board…

Download of the Week: Opossum “Blue Meanies”

Kody Nielson spent almost the entire decade of the ’00s with his brother Ruben in the Mint Chicks, one of New Zealand’s best-loved experimental noise pop outfits. After the brothers took that band as far as they felt it could go, they went off in their own creative directions, with Ruben moving on to put together the Unknown Mortal Orchestra while Kody formed Opossom with former Mint Chicks bassist Michael Logie and celebrated Kiwi singer-songwriter Bic Runga. Featuring brilliant snatches of 1960s psychedelic pop mixed with doses of modern indie rock, Opossom’s upcoming album Electric Hawaii is a fully immersive listening journey — and we’re into “Blue Meanies” best. (After all, any reference to the animated film Yellow Submarine is fine by us!)

Roxy helps celebrate the 50th Annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championship

Roxy had a great time in Virginia Beach last week for the 50th Annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championship.

We played spin the wheel all weekend long, giving beach goers a chance to win the perfect beach essentials including beach balls, Roxy sunnies, and screen printed Roxy beach tanks of their choice. On the menu of options they could pick from: ‘Stoked’, ‘Hot Beach’, and of course ‘I Heart Surfer Boys’.

Beyond the games on the beach, there was plenty of action in the waves. Team riders Chelsea Tuach of Barbados took 1st and Nikki Viesens of Florida took 2nd in the Women’s Pro, meanwhile Vanina Walsh of Hawaii made her mark in the SUP Division taking 2nd place. It was a great week in Virginia Beach for Roxy, sea ya’ next year ECSC!

From Cardiff to Costa Rica The Lisa Andersen Champ Camp charges on

From camping in Cardiff to Costa Rica, some of the best amateur girl surfers from Latin America and the US came together for a Lisa Andersen Champ Camp at Playa Negra to push each other and learn from the best.

Judging from a selection of online video entries, 4x World Champion Lisa Andersen identified the top surfers and gave these “future champs” a one of a kind experience. Special guest Sofia Mulanovich—Latin American legend and previous World Champ—joined Lisa Andersen in Costa Rica to provide hands on coaching, instruction, and video analysis that helped advance the girls’ surfing.

The girls scored head high waves everyday, but this surf trip was no vacation. A typical day of camp training included 5am wakeup calls and 6am surf sessions with video and one-on-one coaching from Lisa and Sofia. Breakfast didn’t come until 9, and was followed with more surfing and technical analysis and feedback. In the afternoon came cross-training—the future champs practiced yoga and learned the importance of stretching and surf exercises. The daily video review allowed Lisa Andersen to break down everything for the girls and play-back waves and help critique the girls’ surfing. Lisa and Sofia also provided the future champs with media training and interviewing, preparing them for their career as a professional surfer.

Keep your eye out for these future champs: Nikki Viesins (FL), who claimed 2nd place at the East Coast Surfing Championships in the women’s pro division shortly after the Champ Camp, Tatiana Weston-Webb (HI) Surfing America National Champion, Lucia Cosoleto (Argentina), Melanie Guina and Vania Torres who surf for the Peruvian National Team, Leilani Aguirre (Peru), Adela Recordon (Chile), and Leilani McGonagle, who claimed two national titles in Costa Rica just 5 days after the camp!

Featured Artist: We Became Actors

We Became Actors have been power-popping away in Minneapolis for the last several years, and their most recent record, Something Major, is packed with the sort of melodic, handclap-fueled rock that’s never gone out of style as far as we’re concerned. The quartet’s “Knights Of The Bright Side” provides backing to one of our recent “Let The Sea Set You Free” clips filmed in Biarritz, France — check it here!

Let The Sea Set You Free winner Emilie Layla Lovaine in Nylon Mag

Every month we look forward to picking up the latest issue of Nylon Magazine and this month we were stoked to see the beautiful and talented brunette Lea Michele on the cover – everything about her auburn hair screams Fall…a lot like our Coastal Cove Pinterest Board.

Flipping through the pages we were even more excited when we stumbled upon another brunette and artistic beauty who happens to be near and dear to our hearts – Emilie Layla Lovaine, who as you may know is our European Let The Sea Set You Free winner who hails from Wales and runs her own inspiring blog Flock.

On her recent trip to the Roxy Pro in Biarritz, France with the other Let The Sea Set You Free winners, Emilie wowed us with her voice, overall coolness and big heart (lots of hugs).

Here’s a short behind the scenes video of Emilie singing at the recording studio at Roxy Headquarters in France. Don’t forget to grab the latest Nylon Mag on stands now!

Download of the Week: Seapony “What You Wanted”

It’s not much of a shock that we’ve had summer on our minds a lot lately…but when we listen to Seapony‘s newest material, we can’t help but hear the sound of autumn. On their 2011 debut, Go With Me, the Seattle trio summoned the sunny spirit of summer days with its twee-influenced dream pop. However, their upcoming follow-up, Falling (out in, naturally, September), possesses a more brisk and robust sound that reminds us of crisp leaves under our feet and sunlight shining down at a sharper angle. We can’t say we ever eagerly await the end of summer, but at least Seapony gives us something to look forward to this time!

Featured Artist: Oaklynn

Formed a couple years ago in the northern Georgia city of Dalton, Oaklynn have since migrated to South’s music capital, Nashville. Oaklynn is no country act, though. Rather, this double-pair of brothers — Josh and Seth Smith; Tripp and Tate Howell — craft super-catchy electro-pop in the vein of a less bombastic M83. They’re in the process of releasing a handful of singles on Tennessee label Regenerate Music Company, and our favorite so far is “Everytime,” with its restrained verses and positively soaring choruses.
