Download of the Week: FAWN “Pixels (Arranged Marriage Remix)”

We couldn’t be more excited for this month’s release of Fawn‘s debut album, Coastlines. Combining the driving post-punk energy of Interpol and Editors with a vocal style similar to the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, this Detroit band is poised to make their mark on the national indie scene. The album’s title, incidentally, is a sly reference to North America’s overlooked third shores: those of the massive Great Lakes adjacent to Fawn’s Michigan home.

Let The Sea Set You Free: Meet The Winners!

We are proud to announce the winners of the Let The Sea Set You Free contest.  Though the winners are from different locales, they share a similar stoke and love for the water, arts and fashion. Americas winner Katie McLean describes herself as being “infused with a love for surf and street cultures and a desire to create [her] own path”.  Her expression spans from art to fashion to singing.  Also a musician, Roxy’s European winner Emilie Layla Lovaine sees life as “one great adventure.”  Roxy’s Asia-Pacific winner Madison Setiawan encourages girls everywhere to “dare to dream.”

All three girls will be able to express their inspiring vision through Roxy’s platforms and share their creativeness with Roxy’s social media fan base. We are so proud of all the amazing Roxy girls who entered and invite you to follow your winners on their first trip to Biarritz France for the Roxy Pro, starting July 9th. Check back soon!

Let The Sea Set You Free: Thanks for Joining Our Ride

We set out on a journey to Let The Sea Set Us Free, by learning what makes each of you a Roxy Girl.  Looking back on the countless videos, photos, quotes, faces, languages, and experiences, we’ve come out more inspired, more free, and more alive than we could have ever dreamed.

The Sea has given us all something to connect with, something greater than ourselves.  We met thousands of like-minded Roxy girls from around the world and we encourage each of you to reach out and share your love for the sea with each other. Your courage and dreams have inspired us beyond words,  and for that we are humbled, happy and forever inspired by every Roxy girl who we’ve connected with along the way.

Three winners will be announced tomorrow, June 19th,  and we are excited to share their amazing story with all of you.

Featured Artist: Passion Pit

Immediately catapulted into the spotlight when their “Sleepyhead” single made the rounds back in 2009, the boys in Passion Pit are back, just over three years later with a new album. They’ve taken a somewhat different path from their peers in bands such MGMT, becoming a little weirder but also a little more personal at the same time. Singer Michael Angelakos still rips with his falsetto and the beats still bang with equal parts sunshine and thunder. We’ve heard a couple songs off the new album – Gossamer, which drops on July 24th – and we think it’s going to be a great soundtrack for our summer. Check out the single “I’ll Be Alright” below to hear for yourself!

Roxy Waikiki Classic Athlete Spotlight: Vanina Walsh

What better way to kick to off the Roxy Waikiki Classic (happening this weekend), than to meet one of its local contenders? We caught up with Roxy Team Rider Vanina Walsh, who will be surfing in the Jr. Queens division and the wildcard spot in the ASP professional longboard division this weekend. At only 15 years old, Vanina is one of the youngest ASP contenders, and an inspiration for all the local girls in Hawaii.

“I’m looking forward to meeting and surfing with all the girls that are traveling here from all over the Islands and the mainland,” says Vanina. Not only is the Waikiki Classic fun with lots of stuff to do, but it is a great free event. With the state of the economy, it gives all the girls a chance to be part of the Roxy community and showcase their talent.”

Don’t be surprised if you find Vanina outside the lineup with her stand up paddle when she isn’t surfing her longboard heats. Vanina is just as talented and well-known in the stand up paddling arena. She just placed 2nd on the SUP World Tour event, and has won numerous SUP surf and race contests.

Vanina is an all-around watergirl and artist. She could even teach you a thing or two about bikini-making and painting. Come down to the event this weekend, and be sure to stop by and say hi to Vanina and our professional athletes Kelia Moniz, Lisa Andersen, Jen Smith, Rosy Hodge, and Monyca Bryne-Wickey.

See you there, and be sure to purchase your event tank at our stores in Waikiki!

Team Rider Jen Smith Shaping for International Surfing Day

As we are fast approaching International Surfing Day on June 20th, team rider Jen Smith, who happens to be one of the most down to earth surfers and skateboarders around, mentioned she was getting ready to shape a surfboard and let’s just say, we were nothing short of speechless after seeing what she came up with…

When Jen and photographer Drew Martin, of Drew Martin Photography teamed up, they captured what surfing is all about; It’s those creative moments shared both in and out of the water and this is where it all starts!

In Jen’s own words, “Surfing is one of my greatest passions and I’ve been riding waves for about 19 years (well over half of my life). recently I picked up a planer ad started shaping boards. It’s an amazing challenge and a new way of exploring ad expressing my love for the ocean. It’s all about finding the board you want to make within the blank you are starting with. For this project, I decide to make a board for international go surfing day. What better way to celebrate go surfing day than to make a new board to slide across a wave on.”

We hope you all enjoy watching this video of Jen shaping a one-of-a-kind surfboard and inspires you to get a little creative (in or out of the water) on International Surfing Day.

Featured Artist: Lotus Plaza

Although he’s best known at this point for his role as guitarist in Atlanta indie rock juggernaut Deerhunter, Lockett Pundt’s solo records under the Lotus Plaza moniker are starting to turn more and more ears. His latest Lotus Plaza LP, Spooky Action At A Distance, is full of chiming guitars and reverb’d vocals, and we’ve had it in constant rotation since its April release. If you’ve ever wondered what Deerhunter might sound like as a half-remembered dream, here’s your answer.
