Download of the Week: Magic Trick “Torture”

A founding member of prolific San Francisco garage rockers the Fresh & Onlys, Tim Cohen has always found time for various collaborations and solo projects. After putting out several albums and EPs under his own name and his nom de guerre Feller Quentin, Cohen is set to release the second record under his latest alias, Magic Trick. The upcoming Ruler Of The Night was recorded quickly during bouts of inspiration, and we think its carefree, ramshackle sound suits its songs perfectly.

Featured Arist: Pepper Rabbit

Pepper Rabbit is the rare sort of band that you can’t help but like. Even though they don’t call Louisiana home, it’s no secret that the Los Angeles duo takes most of its inspiration from New Orleans, the city where they recorded their strikingly fun debut LP, Beauregard. And while multi-instrumentalist frontman Xander Singh and drummer Luc Laurent don’t play anything resembling zydeco or hot jazz, the Big Easy’s unmistakable vibe also permeated the sessions for Beauregard‘s excellent follow-up, 2011′s Red Velvet Snow Ball. Whether Singh is playing ukelele, clarinet, or whatever else he can get his hands on, he and Laurent manage to conjure and capture New Orleans’ joyous musical mojo every time out.

Sally Wins at Rio! GO SALLY

Congratulations on winning the 2012 Billabong Rio Pro, Sally Fitzgibbons!

After 3 solid ASP wins this season, Sally Fitzgibbons’s off-season training and hard work are in her favor, and she is stronger than ever.

Still coming off a win at Bells Beach, Sally came in fired up for the event full of energy and a solid mindset. In the final round against Coco Ho, the waves were meager and difficult to pull off a high score, but Sally took over with a solid 7.93 with just a few minutes remaining.

Sally is on a roll! Stay tuned for the next event in Biarritz, the Roxy Pro! Download the app on your smartphone to watch Sally live.

Frequencies: Reflections with Team Rider Kassia Meador

Longboard icon and Roxy team rider Kassia Meador floats serenely across the majestic waves captured by the lense of world renound filmmaker Sonny Miller. In Short 2 REFLECTIONS of Bruce Mullers FREQUENCIES. The visual meditation is the second of four shorts teasing the release this fall of Frequencies, an experimental documentary and visual essay by Muller shot at prime surfing destinations across Southern California. Starring Meador and with an original score from Los Angeles-based psyche-pop trio E.S.P, Frequencies aims to explore how man can find synergy with nature’s cycles. “Their are so many different frequencies all around us at all times: ocean waves, sound waves, light waves, infrared and many others outside our range, but all have an effect on us,” explains professional surfer and passionate photographer Meador. “There are many parallels we can connect between surfing and navigating life.” Having previously made the music video for Warpaint’s single “Elephant”, Florida-native Muller combined his love of surfing and the fantastical films of Ridley Scott, Andrei Tarkovsky and Akira Kurosawa in the upcoming feature. “We exist in a world that is vast and dynamic,” he says. “We’re using surfing as a medium to explore how we harness these energies and the effects they have on us.

Download of the Week: Sad Baby Wolf

Although he considered quitting music outright after his ouster from the Shins a few years back, Marty Crandall decided to keep at it by forming a new band with his brother Maury and a few old friends from their hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Naming the outfit Sad Baby Wolf, the Crandall brothers and their cohorts have been quietly releasing singles and covers – our favorite so far is their terrific take on Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Everything Is” – before their debut album hits the ground running later this spring!
