Friends of Roxy: Kelly Connolly and Everyday Surfboards

Our Roxy friend Kelly Connolly stopped in Roxy headquarters last week, board in tow, and a basket full of organic goodies from her “Little Santa Anita” canyon Sierra Madre, CA, where she resides with fellow shaper, Richard Wisz, their dog Mona, six chickens (Nell Mrytle, Heisenber, Bra bra, Flo, and Koko), and their 3 rabbits (Lil Mo, John Muir, and Darla).

A passionate person who loves to create things, among one of her many creations is a 5’8” blue board quad with handmade fins and a unique resin tint epoxy glass job by Greg Mungall…a beauty she shaped herself out of 100% recycled GreenFoam (pretty cool) for Roxy’s VP of Marketing Danielle Beck.

Kelly spent her childhood years in the likes of San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles which likely plays a key role in her undying affinity for adventure and love of water, because, let’s be real…she was never far from it…traveling to the likes of Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, the Caribbean Islands, Scotland, England, Ireland, Italy, France, and Spain!

It was inevitable that someday she’d find herself shaping boards and being one with nature, something she’s mastered in her now full-time job shaping surfboards! A process that usually takes a couple hours but not without a break in between to give it some ‘fresh eyes’. She always considers “who will be riding it, where…and what the riders expectations are”.

We HEART Kelly and know you will too! Have a look at the Everyday Surfboards Facebook Page or their blog and become inspired. We are!

Download of the Week: Brendan Benson “Bad As Me”

If you recognize Brendan Benson‘s voice, it’s likely from hearing the Raconteurs, the band he co-founded with fellow Michigander Jack White in 2005. His solo career, however, dates back to the mid 1990s, so it’s hardly surprising that his new single, “Bad For Me,” sounds so remarkably assured and well-crafted. The song – and its soaring choruses that seem plucked straight from Elton John’s 1970s songbook – is pulled from Benson’s upcoming record, What Kind Of World, due this month on Benson’s own Readymade Records. If the rest of the album is as brilliant as “Bad For Me,” it’ll turn out to be one of our favorites of the year, hands down.

Featured Artist: New Build

The two lead singers from Hot Chip usually get all the credit for that band’s hit songs. But credit is definitely due for the incredible rhythm section, who have taken time out from their main band to form New Build. Wriggling and writhing with the same infectious beats and soulful melodies of their day job, the songs of New Build sound familiarly awesome! Their first album, Yesterday Was Lived and Lost was just released and we can’t stop listening to it.

Congratulations Sally Fitzgibbons, on Winning the Womens Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach!

Congratulations Sally Fitzgibbons, on Winning the Womens Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach!

Last year, Sally faced 4-time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore in the semi-finals at Bells. Then she took out current World Champ Carissa Moore in the finals and captured her first WCT victory.

Today, Sally met Carissa Moore in the semi-finals at Bells, determined to ring that bell once again. She made it one step closer with her powerhouse turns and critical maneuvers in the pocket of the hard-to-read waves, taking out Carissa once again. Stephanie, just as fired up, took out rookie Tyler Wright in the semis.

Stephanie and Sally were neck and neck in the final, battling it out back and forth every minute. In the last few minutes, Sally took the lead after bettering her top scoring wave. Stephanie managed to catch one last wave, but was unable to top Sallys score. Sally Fitzgibbons wins the heat!

Congratulations Sally on your win at the 2012 Women’s Rip Curl Pro at Bells for the second year in a row!

Sally is well on her way to that world title!!
