Download of the Week: Parlovr “Holding On To Something”

Available 9/21 – 9/28: Parlovr “Holding On To Something”

Montreal band Parlovr – don’t panic, it’s simply pronounced “parlor” – formed during the chilly Canadian winter of 2006, and the trio hasn’t stopped gaining momentum since through a combination of manic live shows and good old-fashioned Internet buzz. (Touring with high-profile acts such as the Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand hasn’t hurt, either.) Last year’s EP, Hell / Heaven / Big / Love, won the band additional fans with the stomping track “Hell, Heaven,” while this fall sees the release of the band’s second full-length record, Kook Soul, from which the circus-like “Holding On To Something,” featured here, is pulled.

Having first met in elementary school in New York’s Upper West Side, Alex Frankel and Nick Millhiser initially joined creative forces in hip-hop outfit Automato before opting for poppier pastures with their current dance music project, Holy Ghost! The pair’s self-titled debut album was released this past spring, and it’s helped the electro-pop duo steadily pick up fans of their cool-firing beats, keyboard breakdowns, and easy melodies all through this past summer. ROXY hearts NY! (Video)

ROXY and our team riders took NY by storm! Sally Fitzbiggons, Rosy Hodge, Lisa Andersen, Kassia Meador, Kelia Moniz, Monyca Byrne-Wickey, and Torah Bright came to NY for the Quiksilver Pro 2011.

A lot of fun times were had! Between the ROXY Beach House, Surf Camp, packed athlete signings, the Quiksilver Pro NY opening ceremony, the premiere of The Art of Flight, Fashion’s Night Out and the super session charity face-off between Sally Fitzgibbons and Quiksilver’s Steph Gilmore, we had a BALL! See our pictures here!

History was made, and we were happy to be able to bring a little bit of our west-coast surf culture to the right coast. Thanks Long Beach, NY!! <3

Watch the video, for our little love letter to NY!

Torah Bright: On The Road Again

One of the many highlights from the last few months…Art of Flight Premiere

People always think that summer is the “off season” for snowboarders but I feel like I’ve been on the go more than ever these past few months. From Australia to New Zealand to Mt. Hood to New York and finally home for a few days of chill time before I head back out for more photo shoots in LA and another trip down under. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind but heaps of fun snowboarding, photo shoots with the Roxy girls, The Art of Flight premiere, watching Owen Wright battle Kelly Slater at the Quik Pro and sitting court side for a Federe match at the US Open. But honestly, home is such a luxury these days that these past few days home has been the real highlight. There really is no place like home to recharge and reboot for another round of adventures. I’m hoping these last few days did the trick….here we go again!

Cheers, Torah

Download Of The Week: Fair Ohs “Baldessari”

Available 9/14 – 9/21: Fair Ohs “Baldessari”

Hailing from East London, Fair Ohs fuse all sorts of influences to arrive at their tropical, beyond-postmodern sound. Bandmembers Eddy Frankel, Matt Flag, and Joey Ryan craft songs that draw sonic hints from recent hitmakers Vampire Weekend, vintage groups such as the English Beat and the Police, and – if you listen closely enough – even a hint of George Harrison. The trio’s debut album, Everything Is Dancing, is out now and comprises a salvo of bouncy tracks perfect for the warm days of early fall.

Featured Artist: Malibu

Featured Track: “Yesteryear”
Album: Robo-Sapiens
Myspace: /MalibuJams
Label: Expansion Team

Malibu is the solo recording and remixing alias of synth wunderkind Roger Joseph Manning, Jr., also known for his roles as co-founder of 1990s California band Jellyfish, keyboardist for Beck, and collaborator with French pop outfit Air. While Malibu’s remixing talents have added color to recordings by everyone from Felix Da Housecat to Jamiroquai (as well as Beck and Air, naturally), it’s with the release of the all-original album Robo-Sapiens that Manning’s intractable Giorgio Moroder influence is fully exposed. You probably heard his song “Yesteryear” in Episode 5 of Roxy Refreshments.

Torah Bright Interviews Travis Rice @ The Art of Flight Premiere! (Video)

Travis Rice being interviewed by Torah Bright!

Travis Rice being interviewed by Torah Bright!

Friend of Roxy, Quiksilver rider Travis Rice, has a new snowboard movie due out September 2011. ‘The Art of Flight’ is a follow up from the producers of ‘That’s it, That’s All’ and features Travis Rice along with 8 of his snowboard buddies in a global trot from Jackson Hole, Alaska, Aspen, Patagonia and to British Columbia, to name a few. We asked (more like begged and pleaded) our brothers at Quiksilver to see if they could somehow help us get into this awesome premiere.

Apparently asking nicely worked for us, because we got our Roxy Team Riders into the premiere. Our very own snowboard queen Torah Bright, is a good friend of Travis. We armed her with a mic and sent her on the red carpet to interview T. Rice. Afterwards, we joined a very excited crowd in the Beacon Theater on Broadway, to watch this very-much buzzed about movie. One word: AMAZING.

Watch our video, as our ROXY Team Riders – who are in town for the Quiksilver Pro NY – get beautiful with Stila to walk down the red carpet for the Art of Flight premiere.
