Available 8/31 – 9/6: Active Child “Playing House”
Working under the nom de plume Active Child, Los Angeles’ Pat Grossi fuses a number of musical styles – everything from ambient to hip-hop – to manifest his sultry, enchanting soundscapes. The lead single from Active Child’s forthcoming debut, You Are All I See (out now on Vagrant Records), is the addictive “Playing House,” on which swirling synths combine with crisp electronic drum samples, phased handclaps, and distorted R&B-tinged vocals from How to Dress Well to create a distinctly after-dark vibe.
Last but definitely not least is San Francisco! Kassia Meador, Kelia Moniz, Rosy Hodge and Jenn Smith make their final stop on their Roxy California Trippin’ roadtrip. Fresh off a stop at Santa Cruz the girls headed north. About 90 minutes, 2 cups of coffee, and a couple replays of a Phoenix album later, the Roxy athletes pulled up to the famed bridge for a surf session. Just as they thought, the Golden Gate bridge surf was epic. It truly was the best way to wrap their road trip.

Botany is the catch-all title for the musical quests of Spencer Stephenson, a young Texan with a gift for turning recycled sounds into something entirely new and brilliant. Stephenson’s most recent release, Feeling Today (his first under the name Botany), is an EP-length collection of gracefully patchwork songs dedicated to his recently deceased mother, recorded in the house where she raised him. Delicate, bright, and joyful, the record acts as a celebration of life.
I’ve been back in Australia for a week and a half and have managed to do a million and one things. I spent some solid time at Perisher with Jake and the local crew there, had some sunny spring days riding the newly named “Bright’s Pipe” and we even lucked out with a powder day in the gum trees. Fun times!
Powder day and snowboarding amongst the gum trees!
Went to Sydney to shoot the cover for Women’s Health magazine and to Melbourne for the autograph signings and the Chalet Girl movie premiere. Which I highly recommend!! But my favorite part of this whirlwind trip home was hanging out up at Mt. Hothem with the Roxy sales reps and getting to teach Sally Fitzgibbons how to snowboard. It was so much fun and she totally rips! Hopefully someone snagged some video clips so I can share them with you. Legend! Can’t wait for our surf trip so she can teach me a thing or two in return!

Surf Action Update:
Thursday morning at The East Coast Surfing Championships was welcomed with warm, offshore winds and an increase if surf (great news for the contest!) The weather is hot and humid as Hurricane Irene is on it’s way, but as of now, the heats are still running today.
The surf is expected to pick up and is already cleaner and bigger than yesterday.
Currently in the water are the boys heats ripping waste high sections, and coming up this afternoon are the pro women’s heats at 5:30pm EST. Roxy team rider Chelsea Tuach from Barbados will be surfing this evening, and Alison Bowman, who is hanging out in the Roxy tent today, will be competing this Friday!
In the last three years, Nika Roza Danilova has gone from being an experimental teenage noisemaker to the internationally celebrated musician known as Zola Jesus. The diminutive, remarkably intelligent Danilova – she completed high school and college in a combined six years – was raised amid desolate Wisconsin environs to ultimately emerge as one of this year’s leading lights in electronic pop, as authoritative publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, The Guardian, NME, and The New York Times have championed her dark, yet increasingly grandiose music. Following a recent contribution to the new M83 album, Zola Jesus’ upcoming release, Conatus, represents another leap forward for the 22-year-old Danilova – get a taste of it with “Vessel,” the droning lead single lightly colored with industrial sonics.

Her delicate features may make her seem like a featherweight singer-songwriter upon initial glance, but St. Vincent’s Annie Clark is certainly anything but. The songs on St. Vincent’s third album, Strange Mercy – due in September on 4AD – have been stripped back to their bare essentials, with sparse arrangements that allow Clark to play them on her own, if necessary. The Texas-bred multi-instrumentalist worked this time around with John Congleton, known in indie circles for his powerful collaborations with Black Mountain and Explosions in the Sky, and the partnership drove Clark to push boundaries during the recording process as she sought new musical directions and different sounds throughout.
Over the weekend our girl Kjersti Buaas won 2nd place in the slopestyle event and 6th place in the halfpipe at the first stop of the Global Open series in New Zealand. This contest marks the beginning of the new 2011/12 winter competition season, so Kjersti is off to a great start! Here’s a few words from Kjersti about the event:
“My best run in the slopestyle event consisted of: 360 tap, 50-50 to backside boardslide, 50-50 to bs. 180 off the pole jam, cab 540 indy, fs. 720 mute and a fs 360 stalefish. The course and weather stayed perfect, actually the best conditions I have ever ridden here.
The next morning in the halfpipe event I tried some good old air-to-fakies in practice, but I was mainly focusing on pacing my energy, since I was running on fumes. The finals started and the first contest run that went down made everybody on the top go; wooohhhh! Spanish rider Queralt Castellet dropped in and did the biggest bs. 900 I have ever seen from a girl and set the standard for the rest of the day.
I was inspired by the American mafia, Kelly, Gretchen, Elena and Hannah, that did not disappoint! fs and bs 900′s, cab 720 and huge airs went down left and right. I aso surprised myself and landed a good run, witch earned me 6th place out of 8th riders in the finals. I also won the creative use of space award, for my air-to-fakie on the first hit, something that I feel very honored to win.
Big thanks to my sponsors, Roxy, Monster, DNB Nor and KAB for the amazing support. Special thanks to “coach of the week”, One Life team captain Chanelle Sladics for holding it down! -KJ”
