Torah Bright: Kennecott Copper Mine

Kennecott Copper Mine

Since I’ve been on lock down in the US without my green card, Jake and I have been getting a little creative with things to do locally. Last week, we went to the Kennecott Copper mine in Copperton, UT in the western foothills of the Salt Lake Valley. It’s a massive structure that produces enough minerals in 41 days to make all the pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters in a year. We checked out the whole structure and all the machinery that goes into making this a smooth operation and their environmental stewardship program that runs the cleanest smelting process in the world. I totally loved it and had a blast with all the trucks and the enormity of it all. Fun fact, the mine is the only other man made site visible from space next to the Great Wall of China.

on our way up to the mine!!

Look how big the truck wheels are!

Definitely worth the trip!

Cheers, Torah

What if you and your best friend had the chance to leave your jobs behind and go on a crazy, incredibly fun, sometimes stressful but ultimately mind-blowing two-and-a- half-year musical adventure across continents and time zones, racking up accolades from the likes of Rolling Stone, Spin, People and Pitchfork. Just ask Kate Cooper (singer/guitarist) and Damon Cox (drummer/singer) aka An Horse, who went from rehearsing after hours in a Brisbane record store to playing on The Late Show With David Letterman. For this duo, making their second album, Walls, was an opportunity to reflect on their fantastic journey, a pipe dream made thrillingly real. The new album just came out on Mom + Pop Records, and it hasn’t left our stereo yet!

Roxy Pro in Biarritz: Competition On

The Women’s World Champion could be crowned this week in France, but with the race for the Title in the hands of the two most competitive girls on tour it is still up for grabs by Roxy’s Sally Fitzgibbons or current ratings leader Carissa Moore. With sunny skies and clean two to three foot waves the Women’s World Top 17 took over the La Grande Plage and the battle heated up as both Sally and Carissa were eliminated in Round 1 and sent to the Round 2 Repercharge. They both safely made it out of the Repercharge and onto Round 3 with some nail biting final second points exchanges between Sally Fitzgibbons and Sofia Mulanovich in her Round 3 heat – Sally moves on to the QuarterFinals as Carissa now faces another Repercharge in Round 4 against young assassin Tyler Wright. If Tyler takes out Carissa she will leave her with a 9th and the World Title chase will carry on to the next and final event in Huntington Beach. Stay tuned to Roxylive.com for updates on who will win the 2011 Women’s World Title. GO SALLY!!

With consistent clean waves at both event venues the Roxy Pro Womens Longboard Event was also in the water battling out the points for a potential World Title that will be crowned in September at the Swatch Girls Pro in China. With a do-or-die format, 32 girls in 16 woman-on-woman heats showed their style and grace to the large crowds at Biarritz gathered to watch the best female surfers In the world, here on Bastille Day. Roxy’s Jennifer Smith and Kassia Meador both move on to Round 2 after dominating their Round 1 heats.

Stay tuned to www.RoxyLive.com for the next call. Event will most likely be ON tomorrow as waves are expected to pick up and glassy conditions to remain.

Download of the Week: The Deer Tracks “The Smallest Cube”

Available 7/13 – 7/20: The Deer Tracks “The Smallest Cube”

Hailing from the small Swedish town of Gävle, the Deer Tracks are David Lehnberg and Elin Lindfors, each a veteran of other musical projects (Leiah, Ariel Kill Him, Twiggy Frostbite). The duo has earned significant acclaim in their Scandinavian home and beyond for their whimsically melodic electronica over the last few years. The lovely Aurora served as the Deer Tracks’ debut in 2008, with a couple of EPs following, including The Archer Trilogy: Pt 1, a five-song collection released earlier this year. Lehnberg and the misty-voiced Lindfors are just releasing a full-length follow-up, and we’re excited to share a track from it, “The Smallest Cube.”

Summer Sale Please

There’s nothing like a good sale. The feeling that you scored something big or got extremely lucky and found something you’d been eyeing for awhile never seems to get old (EVER!)- Especially when you love what you’re buying!

Browsing through the selection of Roxy’s annual sale I stumbled upon so many classic silhouettes that are perfect for a closet in desperate need of an update. The first of a couple dresses is the Turquoise Bay Dress shown here in black. This strapless number with zipper detailing also comes in several print options, but black will go with everything and give you the option to take it on the beach or out on the town…and with a $27.65 price tag you might just wanna snag 2! Another gorgeous dress is the Surf Roots Dress. Why? Because this Hot Lava color is, well, Hot! Not to mention the ties can easily convert this dress into strapless and look fantastic with a cardigan!

To stay toasty through the cool summer nights and carry you right into Fall try a burnout style hoodie like the Endless Days. It’s beachy, retro, and has some phenomenal detailing. Or for some extra color go for the Wanderer Hoodie. It’s fun serape-style look is chic and super soft! The perfect accessory to complete any look is the Daydream Scarf for only $14! It’s versatility makes it the perfect layering option. Back to shopping…

Remember the Sale ends July 14th!!! (free shipping!!!)

Featured Artist: The ACBs

Album: Stone Rosa
Featured Track: Be Professional
Myspace: /theacbs
Facebook: /theacbs

Kansas City’s ACB’s have improved steadily since releasing their self-titled debut in 2006, becoming better songwriters, more proficient musicians, and – naturally, given those first two points – substantially more popular in their hometown. Now with their latest release, Stona Rosa, the band is looking to stretch its horizons beyond the Midwest, and the album’s strong hooks and sharp playing could accellerate the group’s rise. Stona Rosa is full of smartly constructed songs well-suited to warm summer days and nights; judge for yourself by visiting the ACB’s Bandcamp page, where the album is currently streaming in its entirety.

Sally Fitzgibbons: Quest for the World Title!

A shakedown in women’s surfing is happening now..we’re shakin’ people, Sally Fitzgibbons and Carissa Moore are battling out points in a race to the finish of the Women’s World Tour. With only 2 events left on the schedule the competition is heating up! In all five event’s of the Women’s Tour this year it has been either Fitzgibbons or Moore that have taken the event title. The two girls have met each other in three Finals so far, and Sally has taken Carissa out on two of those occasions. Total event win tally this season: Carissa: 3, Sally: 2.
The Battle now moves on to the Roxy Pro Biarritz, France and one of the biggest stories in modern women’s surfing will again be at the forefront of surfing news. If Sally can manage to hold Carissa off the winner’s podium, the race will end in 2 weeks at the last stop in Huntington Beach, California. GO SALLY!!

Here is the breakdown of possible outcomes:

If Carissa gets 1st in France, she clinches the World Title.
If Carissa gets 2nd or 3rd in France, Sally needs to win to still be in the running and World Title in Huntington Beach
If Sally gets 2nd she is still in the running for a World Title
If Carissa gets 5th in France, Sally needs a 2nd or better to still be in the running.
If Carissa gets 9th in France, the title decision goes to the US Open.
