Available 4/13 – 4/20: Joan As Police Woman “The Magic”
Joan as Police Woman, aka Joan Wasser, is a bonafide indie music survivor, a talented artist whose eclectic songs have been bubbling just under the surface for years. But on her newest album, The Deep Field, she’s swinging for the fences. The incredibly soulful and gorgeous single “The Magic” will instantly hook you with its funky drums and keyboard, not to mention Wasser’s inspired vocals. The Deep Field was just released this week, so look for Joan at a venue near you.

The Dashing Suns are a four-piece from Oakland, California that takes inspiration from everyday life, translating tiny but important moments into catchy indie-pop songs. The band liberally appropriates 60s garage, 70s power-pop, and 80s post-punk to forge toe-tapping gems like those on their debut full length, The Dashing Suns Really Like You. Our favorite track from the album is “Future Thunder” – its acoustic, laid back feel explodes into classic surf rock.
When Elly Jackson – lead singer of LaRoux most famous for her infectious hook on Bulletproof-walks into our greenroom, the first thing you notice is her all black dress-code. She wears layers of loosely fitting black tops, tailored pants, and slicks back her famous strawberry short crop in a way only SHE could make look this cool. Her jewelry is minimal, and still manages to look edgy. She plops down on the sofa in front of the bright lights to start our interview and right away it’s apparent that she’s friendly, sharp, and best of all – wickedly funny.
Since we know all of our Roxy fans would have loved to ask her questions, we invited everyone to post questions on our Facebook page. See below to see if your question made it & check out the video to see the interview!
Here are some excerpts:
These 3 Roxy fans from all over the world happen to have all asked the same kind of question.
Tannia Lilivette Apodaca, Patrícia Caldeira Bernardo, Chelsea Dixon: What is your Inspiration?
“Obviously we’re inspired by […] 80s music, 80s performers, 80s pop stars,…Joni Mitchell. It comes from a lot of different places; you pick up little things from different places and it rubs off on you but you’re maybe aware of it.”(more…)
Here is a long overdue congratulations to Corinne Pasela for winning the Roxy Shooting Star video contest. If you haven’t checked out her winning video take a look at the clip below, she’s got some super impressive rail riding, handplants and a back 3 out of down kink rail to finish it off.
As SUMMER is inching closer I’ve been trying to switch gears into my warm-weather clothes…but I cannot help but wear my comfiest sweaters and jeans still. After a good day at the beach, my friends and I ended with the best coffee around at Alta (I swear, I’m there WAY too much…). Threw on my favorite Roxy Beach Daize Shirt over my bikini and shorts and I was good to go! On a side note, I found a pair of Roxy jeans I forgot I had and was so stoked to wear them again! The boyfriend/slouchy jean is my new obsession, and paired with some ankle boots and a leather jacket…I love!!
COACHELLA is this weekend!! And I have honestly never been this excited for anything in so long! I’m most looking forward to The Strokes (my all-time favorite band EVER), Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, Best Coast, Yelle, and tons of others. It’s supposed to be super hot (as always) so I’m planning on going down to my local Roxy store to pick up the Surf Island Top. The bright colors and floral print screamCoachella, right?! I’ll hopefully have tons of pictures soon!
Amateur And Professional Female Snowboarders Compete In The First Ever Roxy Powder Jam in Record-Breaking Snowfall Conditions at Mammoth Mountain, CA
Huntington Beach, CA (April 13, 2011)
The Seventh Annual Roxy Chicken Jam is the U.S.’s only all-women’s professional snowboard competition bringing the world’s best female athletes to Mammoth Mountain, CA.
Record snowfall at this year’s festivities resulted in the cancellation of the slopestyle event but in true Roxy form, that didn’t put a damper on the competition. Creative minds at Roxy put together a brand new competition format that would allow the riders to showcase the epic riding condition all over the mountain at Mammoth. The Roxy Powder Jam with cameras provided by GoPro took advantage of the 600+ inches of snowfall by tasking riders to capture the true joy of snowboarding through their eyes.
Teams consisted of three riders divided into invited pros and qualifying amateurs demonstrating their creativity and all-around ability to shred the entire mountain. The competitors were each asked to execute a line, a jib and an air in the video. After submission, the videos were judged on technical difficulty, execution and overall impression and creativity by the official Roxy Chicken Jam judging panel. The panel included Christian Sieverts, Mauricio Natario, MJ Bourgeois, and Jeff Brushie. In keeping with the spirit of Roxy, an extra award was given to the team who submitted the funniest bonus footage.
It was perfect weather for the Science Hawaii Womens Pipeline Pro, at the Banzai Pipeline, on O’ahu’s North Shore. As the whales played offshore, waves were solid in the 4-8 foot range with light trades, and just a little rain. 42 of the best womensurfers and bodyboarders from Hawaii and around the world competed for $3000 in prize money and the chance to surf uncrowded Pipeline for a day. Team Roxy dominated the Shortboard division, with 13 year old Tatiana Weston-Webb Winning the event over teammate Brianna Cope in the final.
Congrats to both girls for a strong showing at the world famous Pipeline!

Phantogram’s music sounds like it’s made in a bustling metropolis. There are electronic loops, hip-hop beats, shoegaze, soul, pop. So imagine our delight at discovering that this impressive duo (comprised of Josh Carter and Sarah Barthel) hails from the very sleepy burg of Saratoga Springs, NY (population 26,186 at last count). Recording and practicing in a barn piled high with cutting edge gear, these two blend both natural and cosmopolitan influences to create beautiful, beat-driven, dreamlike pop songs. And as if that’s not enough, Sarah’s got style for days. You can hear “When I’m Small” in this Fall 2010 vibe spot.
