Chicken Jam Update: Contest is on!

The Contest is on! Half-pipe qualifiers/semi-finals  are scheduled today from 11:30–1pm. If conditions are good, the contest is going into finals immediately after. Slopestyle has been delayed until tomorrow due to the wind.

The riders woke up to inches of fresh powder! Everyone’s having so much fun with all this record-breaking powder at Mammoth & and the riders are excited to get out there. Above, some of the riders took a pic to commemorate Mammoth getting ready to break their snowfall record! Currently they are at about 576″, and once they hit 578.5″ they will have broken a record! We can’t wait!

Torah Bright: Chicken Jam Day One

I finally made it to Mammoth for the Roxy Chicken Jam, canceled flights and a long late night drive from LAX but I’m here and just in time for another huge storm. Heaps of snow and 100mph wind gusts are not exactly ideal conditions for my first contest of the year (I’ve been in the backcountry all season filming for my new movie project) but it’s good to back in the scene and hanging with the Roxy girls for the week. So far, day one’s been canceled and if we get the 7 feet of snow they’ve been predicting, this year’s Chicken Jam might be a powder contest. I’ll keep you posted as the event/storm unfolds.

Cheers, Torah

Roxy Chicken Jam Bound…

Greetings from the Roxy bus!  We have a packed vehicle this year as the crew makes their way up to the 2011 Roxy Chicken Jam at Mammoth Mountain.

The bus made a pit-stop in Lancaster this morning to get chains.  Conditions up in Mammoth are absolutely unbelievable.  According to the Mammoth Mountain website there is an additional 6-7′ of fresh powder (yes, FEET not inches!) expected by Monday.  Wow!  Hopefully this means soft landings and not weather delays.

Stay tuned to all the latest right here on the Chicken Jam blog.

Double X Games Gold for Sarah burke this season

Last week in Tignes, France, Roxy skier, Sarah Burke, won her second Winter X Games gold medal for 2011 and proved that she is the leader in women’s skiing superpipe. With huge airs, a corked 900, ally-oop flat spin 540 and a 720, Sarah earned her place at the top of the podium. This comes hot on the heels of Burke’s gold medal finish in January at Winter X 15 in Aspen, Colorado.

What makes this double gold extra impressive is that due to a shoulder injury and subsequent surgery, Sarah had been forced off her skis from April to December 2010. Now, fully healthy and back in business, Sarah has her sights firmly set on the inaugural skiing superpipe event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Things are looking very good for this Olympic hopeful.

Congratulations, Sarah- we’re so proud of you!!

Shooting Star winner of week 3

Holy cow, there are a lot of good girl snowboarders out there! Seriously, I used to be a pro, and the game is getting fierce. Just check out all of the action going on over at the Shooting Star Youtube page, it’s pretty impressive. It was really hard for us to select a winner this week because the girls are all riding so strong. But after much deliberation, the winning video of the week belongs to Alice Gorton of Richmond, British Columbia. She impressed us with her skills and pushed it over the edge with her smooth style.

Shout-outs are also due to Danika Duffy and Zoe Mayers, who both tied for a close 2nd. We’ll be sending them extra swag to commend their efforts. Because we’re so stoked on all of the video submissions, in addition to the $1,000 and Roxy snowboard and bindings set up that will go to the overall winner on April 5th, we’ve come up with a bunch of more Roxy product to give away to runner ups. So don’t be afraid, keep those videos coming and we’ll hook you up with fun Roxy goodies! Enter here now.

Kjersti Buaas is on a roll

Last week in at the U.S.Open of snowboarding at Statton, Vermont Kjersti Buaas solidified her reputation as the most well rounded woman in snowboard competition. She finished top five in slopestyle and half pipe and won the rail jam. That’s right, I said she won the rail jam. To any of you who are familiar with Kjersti’s career, she’s never actually been that into riding rails. But this was no ordinary rail set-up, Stratton brought out the big (snow) guns and built a four story architectural wonder, complete with 4 rail set-ups, 2 quarter pipes and a massive hip– so for a girl who excels in both pipe and slope, this was a dream situation. Kjersti threw down rail combos, big air-to-fakies on the quarters and a huge and and stylish frontside 540 stalefish on the hip to put her the top of the podium.

Kjersti’s versatility also landed her on one more podium last week. She garnered 3rd place in the overall 2011 Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour. Way to go Kjersti, we’re very proud of you!

In related news, 11 year old Roxy team rider, Maddie Mastro won 2nd place in the U.S. Open Junior Jam. This was Maddie’s first trip out east, traveling all the way from Wrightwood, CA, and it was well worth the effort.

See both Kjersti and Maddie ride next week at the Roxy Chicken Jam in Mammoth, CA!
