Surfer Kelia Moniz’ First Time Snowboarding!

She surfs, she’s beautiful, she’s our quintessential Roxy girl…but she can’t snowboard…yet! Team Rider Kelia Moniz – and pro Longboarder – dropped by our 7th Annual Chicken Jam in Mammoth Mountain this year. We quickly found out that she had never snowboarded before! Of course, we had to put this natural athlete into Roxy Snow Gear and send her up the mountain for some amazing fresh powder. Never one to say no to a challenge, Kelia braved the slopes with an instructor to show her the way. Like a true champion, she got out there and learned to carve. Surprise surprise, the next day…she was ready to do it all over again!

Kelia sittin’ pretty before her very first snowboarding lesson.

A Mammoth instructor lends Kelia a helping hand.

Nice!!!

Torah Bright: Chicken Jam Over and Out

The 2011 Chicken Jam is over and done with. Not exactly the weather we’d hoped for but I had so much fun to riding powder with the girls. The last night we went out to see Trouble and La Roux play up at Canyon lodge and ended up dancing the rest of the night away at The Hyde Lounge. Not a bad way to end an amazing weekend. Here are a few photos from some of the weekends adventures!

Autograph signing with Kjersti and the Wolf pack!

Dinner with Robyn, Ty, Erin, Aimee, Basa, Lesly and Amber.

Cheers, Torah

Featured Artist: Love is All

Album: Two Thousand And Ten Injuries
Featured Track: Kungen
Record Label: Polyvinyl Records
Myspace: /loveisall8
Twitter: @loveisall
Facebook: /loveisall8

The new album from Love Is All, Two Thousand And Ten Injuries, is an eclectic collection of pop melodies anchored by classic punk rock rhythms, and produced, recorded and mixed at the band’s home studio in Gothenburg, Sweden. Though this is the band’s third album (and their first for indie rock powerhouse Polyvinyl Records), it manages to be their most adventurous and, dare we say, accessible effort yet. You can hear the band’s track “Kungen” in the first episode of our Roxy Refreshment series.

Congrats to our Half-pipe winners! Despite difficult weather conditions, which turned out to be the largest snowfall  in Mammoth Mountain history,  some of the best female boarders in the world came to Mammoth mountain. The girls competed against one another showing off incredible talent. In just this past week alone, snowfall totaled between 12-15 feet!

Kelly Marren from Hiillsborough CA took the top spot in the halfpipe competition on Friday, March 25th winning the $15,000 prize purse. The event belonged to the newcomers as Leslie Glenn from Breckenridge CO and Chloe Kim, a ten-year-old phenom, from La Palma CA came in second and third.

Torah Bright: Chicken Jam Day Three

Today was another snowy white out day at the Chicken Jam. So, we decided to turn the slopestyle into a team filming competition to see who could get the best air, line and jib. Not a bad idea but harder than you’d think given the blustery conditions. Chanelle Sladics and Celia Miller were in my crew so we cruised around filming each other with Go Pro’s getting creative with the wind and snow. Roxy’s going to announce the winners and post the videos on April 11th, so be on the look out for some crazy vids. I can’t wait to see what the other girls came up with!

When we weren’t battling the elements and filming all sorts of fun stuff, we spent the rest of the time cruising around in our spirit hoods, these things are amazing! Check me out I’m a snow leopard battling a lobster claw!

Cheers, Torah

Chicken Jam Update: Powder Jam 2011

Last night Mammoth Mountain saw another 3-4″ of snowfall. Bad news is that the Slopestyle contest was cancelled. The great news is that there is tons of fresh powder.  With so many talented riders all in one room, we didn’t want to miss this opportunity. In celebration of all this fresh powder we introduced the Powder Jam 2011 video contest. Riders were teamed up in groups of 3 and were equipped with Go Pro cameras. Teams will be judged on style, creativity and skill. We gave them the following tasks: air&style, line and jib.

The teams that come back with the best footage will be awarded on an individual and team basis. The winner will be announced on April 11th,along with the purse prize and featured on roxy.com! Best of footage will also be posted! Good luck everyone!

Torah Bright: Chicken Jam Day Two

Today all the girls at the Chicken Jam got to enjoy the 36 inches of snow that fell last night. We spent the morning lapping chair 3 getting face shots on the way down and sprayed by people on the way up. So much snow and so much fun! As far as my first pipe contest of the year, Kelly Clark, Elena Hight and I decided to sit this one out and let the younger riders shine and despite the whipping wind gusts, these up and comers rode so well. Tomorrow is the Slopestyle so cross your fingers the wind dies down and the sun comes out!

In other news, I decided to give myself a haircut last night, what do you think? Not too bad considering I used a pair of toe nail scissors for the trim! Check us out tomorrow from 10-2 on the Webcast www.roxy.com/chickenjam!

Cheers, Torah
