We here at Roxy are suckers for quality boy-girl pop, so it’s no surprise that we’ve taken a liking to Wye Oak. Featured Artist: Braids

Album: Native Speaker
Featured Track: Plath Heart
Record Label:Kanine Records
Myspace: /braidsmusic
Twitter: @braidsmusic

Braids was formed by four best friends in their last year of high school in Calgary, Alberta. Convincing one another to delay their first year of college, they stayed in the garage all year and practiced obsessively before eventually moving to the more artist-friendly city of Montreal. Work soon began on their self-recorded, self-produced debut Native Speaker, which is set for release in January. Braids’ sound is sophisticated beyond their years; imagine a thick soup of beats and breathy female vocals that’s unlike anything you’ve heard before. We’re expecting big things form this Canuck combo.

Download of the Week: The Babies “Run Me Over”

Available 12/15-12/22: The Babies “Run Me Over”

Back in 2008 Kevin Morby, who plays bass in Woods, and Cassie Ramone, who sings and plays guitar in Vivian Girls, moved into a small Brooklyn apartment, wanting to start a new band. They both missed the sweaty loft shows they used to play before their bands moved on to larger venues and longer tours. So they wrote some songs, and when their other bands had enough time off from touring, they recorded an album as The Babies. Not surprisingly, the result is a mix of the droning progressive sounds of Woods and the girl-group pop of the Vivian Girls, but more danceable and fun. You’ll have to wait until February to hear the whole album, but you can download the first single right here.

Time For Tights

The temperature is dropping, but that certainly doesn’t mean we’re seeing any less leg. The all-fashionable tights are making their mark on the fashion radar this season with dressy looks and trendy street frocks alike. The options are vast so don’t be afraid to try a pop of colorful tights under some jean cut-off shorts or go for a pair of lacy patterned tights that will instantly add texture and a bit of fun to any outfit! It’s time to add a brand new twist to that Little Black Dress or be daring and layer those tights with some fun knee highs or over-the-knee socks. Legwear is being reinvented so it’s your turn to make your mark. Our favorite go-to tights are Roxy’s very own Havilland Tights. The small bow design adds that unexpected cute factor to any ensemble!

Featured Artist: Grouplove

Album: Self-Titled
Featured Track: Colours
Record Label: Canvasback
Myspace: /groupmusic
Twitter: @grouplove

Hannah Hooper met Christian Zucconi late one evening on the lower east side of Manhattan. Just a few days later Hooper was invited to an art residency on the Greek island of Crete and she invited Zucconi to join her, saying that it seemed like the natural thing to do. While on the island they met Sean Gadd, a songwriter and guitar player from London, Andrew Wessen, a pro surfer and musician from Los Angeles, and his childhood friend Ryan Rabin, an accomplished drummer and producer. The fivesome decided to form what would become Grouplove, and eventually convened at Rabin’s studio to record some songs. The resulting self-titled EP is an exciting, challenging debut that’s already being hailed as one of the must-listens of 2010. Look for a full-length from the band in February.
