Southern California has a lot in common with the sunny, sandy environs of Sydney, Australia. So it’s no surprise that we were immediately taken with Deep Sea Arcade. Hailing from Sydney and working from a pastiche of influences – everything from ’60s psychedelia to ’80s British electronica – the band manages to sound both vintage and current at the same time. Friends since high school, Nick McKenzie and Nick Weaver experimented with various sounds before enlisting the help of drummer Carlos Adura and guitarists Simon Relf and Tim Chamberlain. With a string of buzzworthy singles and an increasing number of tour dates, we expect big things from this fivesome. Look for a full-length album early next year.

Download of the Week: La Sera “Never Come Around”

Available 10/21-10/27: La Sera “Never Come Around”

La Sera is the brand new project of Katy Goodman, who you might recognize from Vivian Girls and All Saints Day. Known for her flighty fingers on the bass and hazy vocals, Goodman started La Sera to showcase her own dreamy-pop concoctions. The band – which also includes Jenn Prince on guitar and Brady Hall on drums, vocals and keyboards – is playing a few shows this fall in advance of the release of their debut single next month (look for a full-length next year on Hardly Art!). We can’t wait to hear what they come up with!

The Refreshments are back!

Hi everybody! Winter is almost here, and to help everybody get in the mood for snow we’re kicking off a new season of Roxy Refreshments. I followed the girl’s all last season with a camera, so this new batch of Refreshments presents a snowboarder’s-eye-view of what really goes into “getting the shot”. It’ll be the same great action and music you’ve come to expect with some added behind the scenes fun, featuring the likes of Torah Bright, Erin Comstock, Kjersti Buaas, Robin Van Gyn and friends. The Refreshments will be dropping every other Tuesday from now until late winter. So until the snow starts falling, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. -Amber

Featured Artist: Eux Autres!

Album Name: Broken Bow
Featured Track: Go Dancing
Record Label: Bon Mots Records
Myspace: Myspace.com/EuxAutres
Twitter: @euxautres

Offering a classic mix of garage and pop, with husky female vocals and biting guitars, San Francisco’s Eux Autres (pronounced “Ooz-Oh-Tra”) originally consisted only of brother and sister Heather and Nicholas Larimer, on drums and guitar, respectively. After sibling rivalry threatened to turn their practices into shoving matches, they added drummer Yoshi Nakamoto and bassist Nathan Berlinguette to create a buffer and expand their sound. After numerous singles, EPs and two albums, the band’s latest effort, Broken Bow, will be released next month, and they’re planning a short series of dates on the West Coast to celebrate. Check out the band’s new single on their site!

ROXY takes the espnW retreat SURFING

ROXY in conjunction with Malibu Makos and Cola’s Surf Camp, set up down at Torrey Pines State Beach on Friday, to give the participants of the espnW retreat an opportunity to experience part of the beach culture that is embedded in Roxy. The surf sessions consisted of significant women in the world of sports including anchors, marketing executives and professional athletes such as Jennie Finch, Laila Ali, Marion Jones and Roxy pro surfer Lisa Anderson. The groups were a mixture of those who could surf and those who had never put on a wet suit before. The event resulted in a collaboration of fun, good times , laughing and an all around inspiring weekend with some of the worlds most amazing women.

Download of the Week: The Weepies “I Was Made for Sunny Days”

Available 10/12-10/13: The Weepies “I Was Made for Sunny Days”

Sometimes a change of location can speed up success – just ask the duo of Deb Talen and Steve Tannen, commonly known as The Weepies. They met nine years ago in a sleepy club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, but it wasn’t until they moved to the dry forest hills of LA’s Topanga Canyon that their catchy folk rock really took off. Drawing upon the realities of Real Life – getting married, having kids – they’ve managed to record three well-received albums and land a slew of song placements (including several popular commercials). Their deepest, most accessible record yet is the newly released Be My Thrill. Give a listen to their new single, “I Was Made for Sunny Days”, and catch them on tour this month!

Featured Artist: The Corin Tucker Band

Album Name: 1,000 Years
Featured Track: Doubt
Record Label: Kill Rock Stars
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Corin-Tucker/
Twitter: @corintuckerband

You might recognize Corin Tucker’s unmistakable voice from her years fronting the enormously influential Sleater-Kinney, but now she’s off on her own, leading the Corin Tucker Band, and reinventing herself in the process. No longer a Riot Grrrl (she helped found that movement), Tucker has evolved into what can only be called a Riot Woman – a wife and stay-at-home mom who also happens to rock your face off. The Corin Tucker Band’s debut, 1,000 Years, was just released this week on Kill Rock Stars (swing by their site to download a free mp3 of the lead single “Doubt”). On it Tucker proves that you can grow up, have a family, and still make time for your art. Our hats go off to this truly inspiring sister.

Kenny Did the Ride Thing!

Back in July we blogged about Kenny Livingston’s  trek across America on his beach cruiser. His mission:

To inspire my fellow Americans, through example, in making a commitment to change the way we approach our personal health, nutrition and lifestyle choices. (From Kennydoit.org)

Kenny’s since reached the Kitty Hawk pier and made it in 67 days total from start to finish from the Hermosa Beach Pier. He even was stuck in Austin, TX for 11 days also with something called ‘Valley Fever’, which is basically an illness you can get from being exposed to the Arizona desert climate too much.

Now he’s currently riding even further to Washington DC in the pouring rain to make a bigger statement to the country’s lawmakers about healthy school lunches and cancer research. He’s estimated to arrive in DC on Thursday, 10/7.

He’s also having a contest to win the Nirve beach cruiser he’ll have ridden about 3,500 miles to the person who raises the most money for KennyDoIt.orgdetails here.

People are still encouraged to bike along with Kenny for anything from 1 mile or 100 to show their support, especially during the last bit into Washington, DC.
