Download of the Week: Aloha’s “Moonless March”

Download of the Week!

Available: 6/30 – 7/7 – Aloho “Moonless March”

Say hello to Aloha! Hailing a far cry from luaus and leis – Bowling Green, OH to be exact – this foursome is known for its extensive touring and intense, non-stop live shows (at which you can purchase their quirky, homemade T-shirts). Despite band members now living in different states, they’ve recorded their best record yet – the bouncy, fun Home Acres, just released on Polyvinyl Records. All of the band’s best elements have fallen into place – chiming guitars, hooky melodies, the trademark explosive drumming of Cale Parks (a great solo artist in his own right), and the endearing, emotional singing of Tony Cavallario. Download the new single, “Moonless March” and let us know what you think. Mahalo!

4th of July Countdown

If your 4th of July is anything like mine, you spend 99.9% of your day in a swimsuit- but still want to find a way to show your patriotic spirit. This year, I’m going to take a cue from the girls of “The Hills” and rock a little red bikini like this one. It will look perfectly festive on the 4th, but still be wearable year round when I hit the beach. So, tell me, what do you plan to wear for your Fourth?

Jen Smith To Throw Out First Pitch Tonight at PETCO Park!

Listen up San Diego! Come see Roxy Surfer, World Champion Longboarder, 3rd generation San Diegan and overall awesome girl Jen Smith throw out the first pitch tonight at Petco Park tonight at 7:05pm. Be there or be square!

Here is what Jen has to say about it…

“Some of my best memories as a kid were watching the Padres on TV with my Granny, a die hard Padre fan. I am stoked to have this once-in-a-life-time opportunity. I never thought I would actually throw out the first pitch at a Padres game.”

You better believe it Jen!

After showing her hometown some love tonight, she will head to Biarritz, France to defend her World Title at the ASP Women’s Longboard World Championships Roxy Jam 2010, which runs from July 10th – 14th.

Triathlon-ing for a Good Cause

This past weekend my friends Jen, Ally and Allison competed in a triathlon up in Ventura, CA called the Breath of Life Ventura Triathlon.

Swimming, biking, and running has never felt so  sweet.

This race was for a good cause!

The proceeds went towards helping kids with primary immunodeficiency and making sure the treatment facilities at Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA and Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City are legit.

Find out more about the race by visiting their website.

Roxy Attends The E3 Kick-off Party!

Our friends at Activision extended an invite to us to their annual kick-off to the E3 party held on June 14th, 2010 at the Staples Center. The morning of the party, blogs were already buzzing with rumors of who would be performing. Would it be Lady Gaga? Would it be Beyoncé? For the record, neither of those performed. However, the line-up they DID have didn’t disappoint, despite the fact that we wouldn’t see a Te-te-te-le-phone live performance.

The line-up included amazing performances by Usher, Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am, David Guetta, Deadmaus, N.E.R.D. (We LOVE Pharrell!), Jane’s Addiction (Hello Dave Navarro!), Chris Cornell, a drop-in from Tony Hawk, Travis Barker, and oh-have-you-heard-of Eminem? Just when we thought the show literally could not get more exciting, Activision previewed some of their most anticipated video games to the accompaniment of real-life pyro effects and explosions. The entire Staple Center gasped, ooed and aahed. Finally, Eminem brought out his special guest Rihanna. The two performed the new single “Love The Way You Lie”, and their performance was electric. Eminem brought the hyped crowd to its feet while closing his show with “Lose Yourself.”

Talk about an exciting night. See some of our pix below.

Featured Artist: Neon Trees

Neon Trees

Album Title: Habits
Featured Tracks: “Animal,” “In The Next Room.”
Record Label: Island DefJam
Website: http://fameisdead.com/

With summer fully open us, it’s definitely time for Neon Trees to help turn up the heat!  Barely a year into their career, this co-ed combo has already made a name for itself on the radio and on the dance floor. Guitarist Chris Allen, singer Tyler Glenn, drummer Elaine Bradley and bassist Branden Campbell formed the band in Provo, UT – not the likliest of rock hotspots. Bound by their love of pop rock,  from Bruce Springsteen to Michael Jackson, the band eventually landed a deal and has thus far released one EP and a full length album, Habits, that’s burning up the charts like the desert sun.

Catch the band this summer on the Bang the Gong tour with fellow buzz bands Civil Twilight and Paper Tongues. Should be a super  fun time.

Download of the Week: The Morning Benders “Promises”

The Morning Benders "Big Echo"

Available: 6/23-6/30- The Morning Benders “Promises”

The Morning Benders last record, 2008’s Talking Through Tin Cans, was named album of the year by iTunes. Not wanting to rush back into things, the band toured for a couple years and laid low before releasing its new record, The Big Echo, in March on Rough Trade Records. Recorded in just 11 days in San Francisco by band member Christopher Chu and Chris Taylor (of Grizzly Bear), the album doesn’t feel rushed. Instead it’s a solid, confident record that sounds like four friends having a musical conversation in their living room. The album comes with a tip from the band that it sounds especially good on headphones. So the next time you’re out for a run, or just listening in bed with your earbuds on, try this one out and see what you think. We bet you’ll be surprised…pleasantly, of course.

Great Bag: Wild Side

Every season here in the Roxy offices, there seems to be at least one item that every girl unanimously starts obsessing over and one day you look around and everyone is wearing this particular item…because it’s just so good! This summer season, without a doubt, the item that we are all wearing (and carrying in this case!) is the Wild Side Bag. It’s stripes are perfectly on trend and the variety of colors it is offered in suit just about any style.  So take it from us, whether you tote it to the beach or use it as your everyday carry-all, Wild Side is one great bag!
