Backstage with N.A.S.A.

Saturday night N.A.S.A.  set the stage on fire with a performance which included dancing shark costumes (yes!), a guest performance by Barbie Hatch, a sick hip-hop set, and multiple stage-dives. We were even treated with a Kanye “appearance via satellite”…ok fine, maybe that wasn’t a real satellite feed, but nonetheless the N.A.S.A. performance of “Gifted” featuring a pre-taped Kanye was a definite crowd favorite, and our personal highlight of the evening.

Before getting the crowd hyped up with their amazing performance, Sam a.k.a. Squeak E. Clean and DJ  Zegon, chatted with Fuel TV. Sam shared that he met DJ Zegon while training as stuntmen for a film as certified sky-divers on a trip in Bali. It was in Bali they decided to start doing music on the side which turned into a full-time gig.

Wait, Sam are you for real? We have a a feeling he was pulling our leg. But I guess with this much talent, does it matter?

Fun Times with The Bravery

The Bravery being interviewed at Roxy Chicken Jam

This year’s Roxy Chicken Jam free concert featured The Bravery and N.A.S.A. We had a chance to sit down and talk with our friends The Bravery, before they went snowboarding with Torah Bright.

We found out these guys were active, love Journey and Prince, enjoy nature and want to award Torah a gold medal in dancing. This indie-rock band proved that they didn’t need their city digs to have a good time.

ROXY: First things first, what do you think of Mammoth so far?

TB: Cold!

ROXY: Besides being cold, seeing you guys are from the city, how do you like playing this venue?

TB: Our favorite shows are those we can do right next to activities that we like to do. If we’re playing on a mountain, we can go snowboarding. If we are playing on the beach, we  can right after.

ROXY: What’s been the most unreal, most memorable venue you’ve played?

TB: Times Square, hands down. You can’t top playing, while looking down on 1 million people.

ROXY: How was your last album “Stir The Blood” different from making your previous two albums?

TB: For our last record “Stir The Blood”, we kind of went back to a lot of the aesthetics of the first record. It was a little more do it yourself. We recorded a lot on the road again, used laptops, and we kind of made things more electronic, a little bit darker than things we were putting out right before that.  Now it’s shooting up the charts!

Lastly, we asked The Bravery the most important question of all.  Mariah Carey or Beyoncé?

The answer was a resounding “Beyoncé!” from the group, except Tony. He prefers Mariah. “I just love her voice!”

IMG_1423

The Slopestyle finals this morning were amazing.

Jamie Anderson came in first and took home $15,000. Janna Weatherby came in second for $7,000 and Jenny Jones in third for $3,000.

Jamie Anderson’s winning run was a back 5, switch back 5 and a cab 5. Boardside 720 off rail. It was really clean, really big, and with great style.

“The surprising thing was how difficult it was to judge because everyone did so well,” Phoebe Mills, head judge.

One of the best tricks of the day was by 4th place Cheryl Mass, a corked backside 7 off the first hit, truly massive and really styled.

In the Superpipe competition, Kelly Clark came in first and took home $15,000. She threw down a major frontside 9 and frontside 7 to cab 7. She had the highest amplitude and the most difficult run of the group. Rana Okada came in second for $7,000 and Elena Hight in third for $3,000.

Rana had huge 5’s and very good amplitude. Her backside hit was massive. She did very well in this competition, making it all the way from the qualifiers to the finals! Her first hit was over 10 feet.

In a surprise move, 2010 Olympic gold medalist in snowboard halfpipe Torah Bright did a demonstration run at the end of the event to show her support for the many amazing riders at the Roxy Chicken Jam.
