ToRoxy Music Club: Stellastarr* “Graffiti Eyes”

stellastarr01

If you’ve been scrounging around for a fresh new adaptation of the post punk and college rock era back in the ’80s and ’90s (reminiscent of The Cure, The Pixies and the Talking Heads), look no further.  Our consideration is bound for Stellastarr*, an indie rock band based out of New York City.  Their third album, Civilized, is set to be released on July 7th, which includes their newest single, “Graffiti Eyes“.  Their infectious songs thrive and will make you want to just get up and dance.

June 20th: International Surfing Day! Come to Roxy’s Beach Day

This Saturday, June 20th,  is International Surfing Day!

Come celebrate with us!

There are events across the globe (not limited to JUST beaches, check out the events in the midwest!) on the USA West Coast, USA Midwest, USA Islands, USA Gulfcoast, USA Great Lakes, USA East Coast, and International locales.

The goal:

take the day, or at least part of the day, to go out, catch a wave or three and — while you’re at it — help clean up your favorite beach. In conjunction with the Surfrider Foundation, we’ll be organizing a handful of offical beach cleanups, but that doesn’t stop you from beautifying your own stretch of sand

from International Surfing Day

Roxy is joining in the fun at Bolsa Chica State Beach
and you’re invited!

DATE: June 20th

TIME: 7:00 AM – Noon (7 – 9 AM complimentary parking if you mention Quiksilver beach cleanup)

LOCATION: South parking lot at Bolsa Chica State Beach, look for the Quiksilver and Roxy buses.

SCHEDULE:

7:00am – Open Surf Session

9:00am – Beach Clean-Up (bags and gloves provided)

11:00am – Lunch

Parking is FREE if you show up between 7:00am and 9:00am. Make sure to mention at the gate that you are with the Quiksilver Foundation Beach Day.

Do not worry if you don’t have a board, Surftech is bringing their quiver of the latest Surftech surfboards and SUP boards to demo.

Also, Taco Bell is rolling up in their brand new taco truck to give away free lunch. Sambazon will also be on hand to serve up their special blend of Acai smoothies (first come first served). As an extra special thank you, the first 300 volunteers will receive a Quiksilver Foundation tee-shirt. Make sure to check-in at the Quiksilver Foundation tent.

Song of the Week: Lissy Trullie “Boy Boy”

off Self-Taught Learner

I first met Lissy while she was DJing at the Beatrice Inn. We were
wearing the same hat and she was playing one of my favorite bands – Television.  Like everyone else, I was immediately smitten with this downtown darling and eager to hear her original music. I love the EP (out now on American Myth Recordings) and “Boy Boy” is a fantastic lead single. Photographer Cass Bird directed the video, part of which was filmed at Lit, where Harley Viera-Newton and Cassie Coane (who played the ROXY JBL launch with me) host their rad Wednesday night party. Harley and Cassie even have cameos along with one of my favorite actresses/style icons Chloë Sevigny. This song reminds me of my New York friends and I hope you dig it as much as I do.

ToRoxy Music Club: Tim Williams “Murderous Air”

timwilliams

If you’re in the mood for some soothing infectious tunes for a summer by the pool, be sure to listen to our newest addiction, Tim Williams.  His first single, “Murderous Air” off of the upcoming album, Careful Love, was featured on the season finale of One Tree Hill.  You can find that little indie pop spark within his poignant lyrics complemented with breezy and relaxing melodies reminiscent of Ben Kweller.  Summer rays never felt and sounded so good!

ToRoxy Music Club: Port O’Brien “I Woke Up Today”

portobrien

If you didn’t like your grandma’s version of folk music, you need to check out Port O’Brien!  They take the best parts of folk music and blend it with a little bit of rock to get their own sound that we like to call ‘foot stomping folk rock’!  They have toured with bands such as Bright Eyes and Nada Surf, and are currently on a west coast summer tour with the Papercuts!  Listen to I Woke Up Today, the single that was recently featured in Roxy’s Design A Bikini promotion, its fresh perspective is one that will brighten up your summer!

ToRoxy Music Club: Chromeo “Bonafied Lovin’”

chromeo3600m3

The electrofunk duo that has shamelessly brought us back to the sex saturated synthetic pop premise reminiscent of the eighties has been recently brought to our attention.  After being declared MTV’s artist of the week in October of 2007, Chromeo has graced us with several singles: Momma’s Boy and Bonafied Lovin’, and the latest being Fancy Footwork, making an appearance in CW’s Reaper.  If you’re in LA or San Diego be sure to check them out live this summer!  David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel’s smooth beats will fleetingly rewind your mind state to a simpler time.
