Hi y’all! We had a hot and stickyDear and Yonderpremier in Galveston, TX this weekend.
This area was greatly affected by the hurricanes and everyone there was so grateful that we came all the way there to show the movie.
Many people had driven all the way from Houston to join the crowd of over 200 people to watch the movie premiere.
Kassia Meador was on hand, signing tons of autographs at the premier, visiting local shops and even teaching at a surf camp with us the following day. Here are a couple pictures of the event.
I hope y’all can join us for one of the upcoming Dear and Yonder premiers!
Holy Ghost released their ubiquitous song ‘Hold On’ on DFA in 2007 and it quickly became one of the biggest crossover tracks from the New Disco genre. The catchy dancefloor anthem works in the New York hipster underground, LA hip-hop ‘hot spots’, everywhere in between, and has been on heavy rotation in my sets since it’s release. Nick and Alex from Holy Ghost have been keeping busy producing dioscofied remixes for the likes of Phoenix, Cursive, Cut Copy, and MGMT, among others, but have been slow to share their original material with the world. The boys linked up with Green Label Sound and last week released a new single “I Will Come Back” (free download www.greenlabelsound.com/holyghost) to wet our appetites for their 2010 full-length album. Below is a video where Holy Ghost talks about how the song was produced. Saturday night I had the pleasure of playing the dubplate (first pressing of vinyl/ only one in existence/ yes I am bragging ) of ‘I Will Come Back’ at the DFA afterparty in downtown LA and watched as the disco glitter spread across the floor. This five and a half-minute dance floor epic, featuring the angelic voices of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus is dynamite and Holy Ghost have struck gold (again) with this layered and intelligent hit.
We are really excited about a special collection of eco fashion accessories that we created just for the Roxy Jam Biarritz. Check them out now! There a great collection of tees, sunglasses, and watches.
They will be available only online from July 10th. You can buy them online then (if you live in Europe).
Like many of you, we were shocked yesterday by the unexpected and sudden death of Michael Jackson. As a memorial to the King of Pop, today MTV has turned into the Michael Jackson music channel.
[MTV] The original cable channel for music, which grew successful in part as a result of Mr. Jackson’s groundbreaking videos, reprised its early days by showing the singer’s biggest hits beginning Thursday evening.
MTV says the marathon will continue through 8 p.m. Eastern on Friday. The channel is showing Mr. Jackson’s music videos, news updates and a highlight reel of the performer’s career. It is showing statements from artists and fans on the bottom of the screen. An updated news special will be shown at 6 p.m.
Sometimes we feel the need to swoon and plug into entrancing melodies that take us to that safe and carefree warm musical haze. It isn’t everyday that a band can melt your melodious soul, but Mason Proper has found a way to do just that. The Michigan born band released their second album, Olly Oxen Free in 2008 and has been touring endlessly ever since. Their summer tour with Stellastarr* is currently in the works and coming to a city near you. Check them out, and they’ll take you on a journey to pure unadulterated bliss.
Rip currents have been a major issue in Daytona Beach, Florida this summer. Orlando News reported that over three day, about 500 swimmers had to be rescued in Volusia County. Be sure to stay safe when you’re surfing this summer!
Our newest artist to watch proves musical wisdom beyond her years with the re-release of her 2005 debut album, Maybe Tomorrow. Molly Jenson’s style is along the lines of a mellow Kelly Clarkson, but shows the versatility of her creativity with edgy tracks like “Wednesday” or the occasional poppy number, “Thinking Of You“. Her eloquence and lyrics encourage listeners to be persistent and hopeful, despite the tough times. So pop her in when times are cloudy and let the music uplife you, she’s sure to earn a permanent spot in your CD collection!
I like Passion Pit’s debut album ‘Manners’ A LOT. I have been a fan of the band since their EP came out late last year and even included the track ‘Sleepy Head’ on my best songs of 2008 list. ‘The Reeling’ is the first single off ‘Manners’ and it is everywhere right now. It’s a catchy indie electro-pop gem and was given the 80s dancefloor treatment by British cutie Calvin Harris. I like this remix because it retains the feeling of the original while tactfully bumping up the energy. Calvin Harris has a gentle hand in comparison to the aggressive electro remixes that I keep hearing but his style really works for me. As his remix of the Ting Tings song ‘Great DJ’ did last year, I expect this reworking of ‘The Reeling’ to be a staple of my sets this summer. I had the opportunity to hang out with Calvin when Boom Bip (Neon Neon) and I DJed his album release party in LA.
Remember back in the ’90s when Blink 182’s childish yet addicting music and lyrics caused adolescents everywhere to simultaneously jump up and down and sing along? Well there seems to be a new age successor upon our hands, and he is Totally Michael. Armed with only a keyboard and a computer, his catchy caffeinated poppy bounce touts an ‘electro punk’ feel with songs about living forever and having fun. What better way to soothe your ADD and satiate that nagging sporadic urge to simply dance and have a good time? Check out one of his most popular songs, “Casual Satisfaction“, its outrageousness just might electrify you.
