Results from Slopestyle Semis

Monday morning the Slopestyle competition went off. 35 riders competed in the main event. Each rider got two runs to qualify for the finals. The Roxy girls were all there: Alexis Waite, Amber Stackhouse, Erin Comstock, Lisa Wiik, Tania Detomas, Robin Van Gyn, and Kjersti Buaas. Lisa Wiik had a really good run and qualified for the finals.

Below are the top 12 moving onto the finals:

1. Janna Mayan-Weatherby
2  Spencer O’Brien
3. Silvia Mittermueller
4. Cheryl Maas
5. Raewyn Reid
6. Chanelle Sladics
7. Jenny Jones
8. Tara Dakides
9. Thea Stenshagen
10.Isabelle Lalive
11.Hana Beaman
12.Lisa Wiik

I caught up with Amber Stackhouse after her run. This was Amber’s first contest and last contest of the season, she has been busy filming for next season’s Podcasts. Amber’s favorite part of the course were the jumps but she doesn’t have a favorite jump per say.

“The conditions out here are the best they’ve been all week actually” said Amber, “the course is really fast. It’s firm but in a good way you can put solid runs together. There isn’t any grabby snow or runts to get caught in so it’s really good.”

Stay tuned for the results from the Slopestyle finals and the TTR World Champ.

ROXY Interns Take Over Mammoth Mountain

Hey guys, just wanted to give you a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a ROXY intern.  My name’s Tivoli and I intern in the ROXY Marketing department.  I’m here in Mammoth helping out for the Chicken Jam doing a bit of everything- meeting fans at the ROXY booth in the sponsor village, checking in athletes at registration, placing ROXY banners throughout the Slopestyle course, and most importantly… having a blast!  Here’s some footage of me cruzing up the mountain with fellow intern Natasha, courtesy of our new friend Patrick…

The Skinny on the Slopestyle Course

The slopestyle course is sick. Wanting to know more about it, I interviewed our friend Oren Tanzer again to get the skinny on this course:

“Slopestyle course is really fun this year, that was the goal when we were building it,” said Oren, “Not to build huge scary jumps that the girls wouldn’t feel comfortable on. The progression has more to do with the style and being able to land the tricks rather than stressing over the sizes of the jumps.

It’s not the largest but it’s definitely unique in a couple of ways. First, it starts with a hip jump, which is different from most slopestyles. Then you get into a couple of high speed jib features: a flat down rail and next to that is a down box. They’re over a short gap so there are some consequences there. After the jibs you go down into the jump section of the course. They’ve got three jumps in a row: first ones measures into the knuckle of about thirty five feet, the second one measure into the knuckle at forty feet and the third one at about forty five feet. After you clear those you have the Zumiez wall ride and then another feature they call the planter box at the bottom of the course.

For a lot of these competitor that are riding slopestyle, probably to them, one of the more difficult features would be the hip because they’re not used to training necessarily on a hip. It’s also the trickiest thing to build and maintain from a park’s standpoint.”

Cool, thanks Oren. Due to strong winds this morning, the Slopestyle event has been postponed. Hopefully we will be able to start the main event today at noon and see the competitors tackle the course.

Santigold and Cold War Kids Rocked the Village

Santigold and Cold War Kids Rocked

Santi On Stage with Her Dancers

The Santigold and Cold War Kids rocked 5,000 fans last night at the concert in the Village.

Santigold had the crowd dancing and singing along to her pumping melodies. I absolutely loved what she was wearing – a big leopard print furry jacket, giant gold earrings, and black pants. She was amazing. Joining her on stage were her two gold-clad back-up singers/dancers. Security couldn’t seem to keep fans off the stage…everyone wanted to dance with Santi! To help appease zealous followers, Santi invited up one fan to dance with her ladies on stage…she chose this guy wearing a Panda hat and he rocked it (following along with her dancers perfectly).

After Santigold’s performance Cold War Kids took the stage and played an amazing set. Fans enjoyed the tunes from the beer garden, up above the village from the Gondola station or right next to the stage. The entire village was pumping. I loved the Roxy heart ice sculpture. It looked really cool all lit up. Behind the sculpture you can see Cold War Kids playing. Good times!

Hot Dog Wins 2009 Mascot Superpipe Competition

Mascot Superpipe Winners!

In front of cheering fans rookie Hot Dog beat the defending champion Woolly for the Mascot Superpipe gold. Hot Dog is Mammoth Mountain local Luke Wynen. He got to take home $3,000. Second place went to good old Mammoth Woolly taking home $2,000 and third went to the Raccoon Patrick Reddy who won $1,000.

Over thirty mascots competed in the Mascot Superpipe Competition at this year’s Chicken Jam. The youngest mascot was a little 6 year-old ripper dressed up in a shark costume. He was a Mammoth local and totally had the crowd cheering. For him, the 18 ft superpipe was more like 50 ft tall! Joining him in the competition we had two different Chickens, a Racoon, a Sandwich, a Gorilla, Alf, and two little pieces of Sushi among other loveable creatures. The judges for the competition were the official judges for the Superpipe and Slopestyle competition and they took judging the competition very seriously.

This is the second year that we’ve held the Mascot Superpipe competition. It’s open to guys and girls of all ages. The only requirement is for you to wear your costume from head to toe.

After the awards ceremony I interviewed the Hot Dog to see just how someone becomes champion of the Mascot Superpipe Competition:

MH: “How did you train?”

HD: “I gotta eat a lot of hot dogs and do a lot of push ups. I spent a little bit of time trying to figure out how to stick my head out of the hole in the front. There’s not a lot of space to see, it took some faith and some good luck.”

MH: “Ummm, doesn’t eating hot dogs kinda make you a cannibal.”

HD: “It does, doesn’t it? maybe we shouldn’t say that I eat them.”

MH: “Nah, it’s okay. Do you plan on competing next year at the Chicken Jam?”

HD: “I do, I think this could be a fun thing for me every year to try to take down Woolly.”

Cool, thanks Hot Dog! Good luck next year and great job to all of our Mascot Superpipe competitors.

The 2009 Superpipe Winners!

Congratulations to Kelly Clark! She took home the gold at the 2009 Roxy Chicken Jam Superpipe Competition. This is the second consecutive year that Kelly has won the Superpipe at the Roxy Chicken Jam, taking home the $15,000 prize purse. Kelly Clark’s winning run consisted of a frontside air, backside 540 mute, frontside 540, method, front 720 Lein, and a Cab 720. Kelly is excited to compete tomorrow in the Slopestyle competition and is hungry for the TTR World Championship.

The Canadians had a strong showing, taking home both the silver and bronze medals in the Superpipe. Mercedes Nicoll’s silver run consisted of a frontside air, backside 540, frontside 720, Cab 360 backside grab, and a backside 720. She brought home $7,000. Sarah Conrad took home the bronze. Her winning run consisted of a method, frontside 540, backside 540, air to fakie tail grab, a cab 540, and a switch alley oop 540. She brought home $3,000.

The energy in the Superpipe was infectious. These killer ladies tackled the Superpipe in front of a huge crowd. Spectators lined up at the base of the Superpipe and on the balcony at the Main Lodge.

Results from Superpipe Main Event

The Superpipe

This afternoon, the Superpipe Main Event session was full of amazing tricks, stiff competition, and great camaraderie as the riders competed for the top twelve spots in today’s Superpipe finals.

Lisa Wiik from Norway put through two inverts in her run in the 18 ft Superpipe and qualified in third place for the finals. She is currently ranked number two for the TTR Top 5 Women. Depending on the rest of the competition, she is in the race for the TTR Champ.

Cheryl Maas had an incredible session, she is mainly a slopestyle rider but managed to qualify for the pro finals against the pipe savvy competition.

Kjersti Buaas took a big jump in the superpipe on her first run. She landed flat and unfortunately injured her hamstring. Right now she is working with a physical therapist to see if she will be able to compete tomorrow in the slopestyle competition. Anything can happen tomorrow with the TTR Championships up for grabs.

Conditions on the mountain were perfect, warm 47 degrees. Stay tuned for the results from the Superpipe Finals.
