ToRoxy Artist: Meet Andy Holder |
Meet Andy Holder (pictured left). His art is featured on the Bender tee, one of Roxy’s studio series tees. Roxy’s studio series is an exclusive line of premium tees featuring artwork from our studio collective (which includes Andy as well as other artists). I had a little chat with the Andy to learn a bit more about the artist behind the graphic.
Did you know that your art was being made into a limited edition shirt?
AH: No I didn’t. Not until this interview anyway.
How do you feel about your art being featured on the Roxy t-shirt Bender?
AH: I never know how or where the images I create are going to end up. So it is really cool to see things in there final form
.
What type of projects are you currently working on?
AH: I just finished up some illustrations for Arkitip magazine which will be focusing on the hotelier Andre Balazs. It is a really well designed magazine that really supports the arts and I am happy that I have a part in this upcoming issue. Right now I am getting started on work for a solo show at Subtext in San Diego that will be happening at the end of March. Which means at this point I am doing a lot more contemplating than actually making anything.
What inspires you?
AH: I get inspired by almost anything or at least I am open to being inspired by almost anything. I try to get out and expose myself to things outside of my daily routine as much as possible.
Where else can we find your work?
AH: I have two pieces in American Illustration 27 which I think comes out in the beginning of February. You can always check my website for current and upcoming shows and projects.
How did you get started in art?
AH: Both of my parents are pretty creative people. So I was lucky to be around art in some form or another whether it be music or crafts. But I think I have always had a passion for creating in general. For as long as I can remember I have been making things with what ever I can get my hands on. When I was younger a rubber band, a shoelace and some paper clips could hold my interest for a while. They probably still would now that I think about it.

Australia day 4 thru Leeanne Curren’s eyes |
Hi friends~ Wanted to share with you the Roxy girls road trip day number 4 through Leeanne Curren’s eyes. enjoy!
"After we painted our masterpiece tent, we really needed to have a good surfing day. We woke up the next day early and checked the waves in front of the camp as the sun was coming up. The conditions were really clean and there were no clouds in the sky, which was a pretty big surprise because its been raining so much lately. It was so amazing what this trip has brought us. The whole beach was empty and we went out and surfed all day by ourselves, and when we were finally surfed out we cane in and had the idea of making a campfire. The boys went to pick up some wood in the forest while we cooked dinner. We grabbed the guitars, Jen’s "hard-core"-Dion, and made a nice big fire to keep ourselves warm on the beach. We hammed for a little while and then Millertime told us the craziest surfing stories that he knew, it was interesting…He is a good story teller. That was really a nice evening, and we decided to sleep on the beach under the moonlight….Which sounded good, but the sand wasn’t that comfortable and we were all paranoid by all of the bugs and the spiders just waiting for us to fall asleep to start eating us. The fire didn’t make it through the night either and we were pretty much frozen on the beach when we woke up. But that was a good experience not to go though again, except falling asleep while watching the stars.. –Leeanne Curren

Roxy Girls Road Trip through Australia, Day 3 |
Hi~ Check out the Roxy girls day 3 traveling up the coast of Australia.
"We saw the potential for the waves the day before so we got motivated and set out alarms to get up early. We woke up at 6am ran down the forest to check the surf, before having tea or breakfast, but the onshore winds and rain sent us all back to our sleeping bags! Kassia and Leeanne decided to go brave the victory at sea and surf the beach break down the street in the meantime Jen, Lyndsay and I headed to the hardware store and bought 5 cans of spray paint with the intentions of getting creative back at the camp. We all met up back at the house, and we decided to to get all CRAY CRAY on the tent, and some random pieces of canvas, so we spent the afternoon making stencils and transformed an average tent into a masterpiece. Then we decided to head to the movie store and have a movie night inside our masterpiece. This day was great to have a lay day, it gave us an opportunity to show off our individual creative skills. I was pleasantly surprised with Lyndsay’s stencil skill. Fingers crossed that we get fun surf in the morning.. — Candice O’Donnell
Roxy Girls Road trip thru Australia day 2 |
Hi~ Here is another great video of epic surf from the Roxy Girls road trip through Australia. The girls love those wetsuit variations and so do I!
"We decided to pack up our stuff and check out of the campsite to head back on the road, with yet another early start having heard of swell up the coast.
We made and executive decision to stop and check into a campsite ASAP. To our surprise we found a mini Mundaka, with some perfect nose riding conditions for those of us with longboards. Jen, Kass and I were just gagging to get out there on those magical left peelers. While the short boarded girls surfed the right, the left was just pure magic, with glassy conditions, friendly locals and loads of waves for everyone. Eventually Leeanne and Lyndsay joined on the longboat magic and Kass jumped up on her Stand up Paddle. We were having so many "party waves" and it was nonstop smiles and laughs. Just a magical session!" –Candice O’Donnell
A Heart Warming Story |
I love this heart warming story about two unlikely best friends, a dog named Bella and an elephant named Tara.
Roxy Girls road trip thru Australia day 1 |
Hi Friends~
On their first road trip up the East Coast of Australia, the Roxy Girls; Kassia Meador, Sally Fitzgibbons, Jennifer Smith, Leeanne Curren, Lyndsay Noyse and Candice O’Donnell first stopped in Torquay and Bells Beach. Check out the footage from their first full day of surfing….
"Road Trips are the ultimate adventure, you are doing nothing but trekking around for the best waves. You don’t really know what waves you are going to find around the corner. Sometimes you score when and where you expect it. Here is a great late afternoon session where we really just enjoyed the wave, the scenery, and Jen really had too much fun toying with her skill on the buoy! Surfing new waves everyday really improves your surfing, as you consistently adjust to something new..And it is always nice when a cool local shows you a thing or two at their break; like what waves are the good ones and where to sit in the lineup" — Candice O’Donnell
