Cocoa Beach, FL Ron Jon surf shop

EPIC! Ron Jon surf shop in Cocoa beach FL, takes the number one spot for most attendance. We had a record breaking 150 girls show up to our casting call. This may have been one of the toughest decisions yet. Our judges were given so many options because so many Roxy lovin ladies showed up for the sixth spokes-model search stop. Ron Jon’s was flooded with beautiful talent. If you were a single male in Cocoa beach on Saturday, I can assure you Ron Jon’s was the place to be.

We had ladies lined up at the door starting at four in the a.m. These ladies weren’t playin a fool it was all business. The length of the line blew Carissa and me away at 8 a.m. when we arrived for set up. It was rad to see such enthusiasm for the Follow Your Heart tour!

Although it was a struggle we had to narrow it down to three girls to participate in the fashion show.  Amy Oberbeck, Katie Neff, and Heather Parrish. All three showed a lot of enthusiasm and love for Roxy, and impressed our judges with their answers to some pretty difficult questions. They all did such a stellar job modeling the latest back to school fashions.

The hardest part of the whole day was narrowing it down to one. It’s a dirty job   but it had to be done. Our winner was……………….. Drum rolls please, Katie Neff!

Katie is a 17 year old from Kissimmee, Florida. She’s 5’ 8” and enjoys modeling. Katie says, “Fashion is a god sent way to express yourself.” Katie thinks it’s fun to experiment with fashion to see what trends you like, and a fun way to express your beauty.  What a talented and bright young lady. Congrats! Supa duppa baby!

We sure couldn’t have asked for a better time in Florida, we saw that little rodent they call Mickey, spent some time with family, and finally got some shred time in on those things they call surf boards!

Were headed north (once again we will be driving by our favorite tourist trap south of the boarder) on our way to NYC! Neither Carissa nor I have ever been there and are really looking forward to it.  It’s our last stop on the Follow Your Heart tour so we hope to see another record-breaking crowd in Long Island!!! See you soon…

Torah Bright Lights up Mt. Hood

**All words by Torah Bright

**Check out Pics to the blog and more on Torah’s HCSC Signature Session at Go211.com (under Torah’s profile) …

Salt lake City, UT
Wednesday
25th June
Day One

Today is arrival day for all campers of session 2 at HCSC.
I flew from Salt Lake Cit, UT to Portland,Or, rented a car and drove to Mt. Hood when i got into hood, Preston and the Frends boys met me and showed me where we were staying.

It was then soon time to meet for the 7pm welcome meeting where everyone met down at the ramps to go over all rules and the way things run at camp. Myself and the frends crew were all introduced, and then we went on our way.
I was so beat that i did a little shopping for food in the morning and read my book before going to bed.

Thursday
26th June
Day Two

9am all the campers meet in the skate street course to get in there groups for the day and collect lift tickets. As soon as the words "on the bus" are yelled it is like a stampeed, with every kid running to get on the busses, in just a few seconds the street course is cleared!
For some reason that morning i was so excited to learn how to skate again, it had been about 6 years since i have done anything on a skate board. So i made plans with jamie from Roxy and Katrina from HCSC to have a session after i got down from the hill, before all the campers were aloud in. I had so much fun that i went out and board my self a skate board!
We had the Roxy party also that night,  Jess and jaime from Roxy had brought up a flip flop maker, so all the girls got to make there own flip flops!
Also I am doing an activity on sunday and its called Torah’s project runway! So all the girls were split up in there house groups and they chose 10 items that they could alter and make into what they would show of on the cat walk! I think this should be a fun activity that the girls will get into and have a ton of fun!
Before dinner there was also a dodge ball tournament… it was hillarious!
Tomorrow is an all girls skate night, so i can not wait to get in with all the other girls who are learning and use my new skate board!

Friday
27th June
Day Three

Today i was ridding and hiking one jump for hours. We are in the middle of shooting a commercial for my signature outerwear line with Roxy, The Roxy Bright Edition.
We are playing with my last name for the commercial. Jake the filmer is using different light filters, so there will be some crazy light and rainbow looking shots, i think it will be really fun!!!
After ridding, i went straight to the all girls skate afternoon. There were so many girls out learning how to pump, drop in and ride bowls, it was awesome! We had some great times all the girls were picking it up quickly!
I was really happy because i dropped in on the big bowl and got round one of the corners!
Fun Days at summer camp!

Saturday
28th June
Day Four

Today i had a small jump clinic going on with the girls It was so much fun to be with a group of girls all wanting to learn new things. There was a 12 year old girl Haily that was doing huge backflips and trying 540’s! i was very impressed!
All the girls were at different levels, learning to straight air, do 180’s or 360’s. Alot of the girls improved and got closer if not got what they set out to do that day!
Iris, one of the coaches at HCSC added a little bit of her own fun flair to the day, wearing a ski racers suit in true 80’s style!
After the the clinic ended and the campers all went down the mountain, i stayed up to continue shooting the commercial. We had till 7pm to get what we needed.
While we were waiting for the right light we had our late lunch and took a photo with the shirtless diggers leaving the mountain for the day and went on with our
business.
We got most of what we needed, which was great, but we still have a little to do tomorrow. when we got down the hill we got the lifestyle we needed and did some funky stuff with lights when it was completely dark.

Sunday
29th June
Day Five

I am completely tied today, but we are heading up to the hill to get the last of what we need to complete the commercial.  It is very experimental what we are doing so i hope it all turns out and that we can make a really cool commercial for the Bright Edition! I just herd today that if these filters that are placed over the lens are not on properly and any light can get in, the film will be black, fingers crossed everything works out perfectly!
We went back to the half pipe, but i was not working out that well today, it was a little inconsistent, i would land of the deck or in the flats. So we did some fun slashes and finished the roll of film with some lifestyle.
while I was looking at the top of
Mt. Hood from the top the chair lift, i was reminded that it is an active volcano!!! I remember about 5 or 6 years ago when i was here there was a earthquake one morning, so nuts to be woken up shaking in your bed!
After ridding we went to the Lake, had a dip and bathed in the sun, it was beautiful!
Tonight;  ‘Torah’s project runway’ where the campers model there creations from the clothes that were given out on day two. They model these creations in a walk off… followed By a dance party! I can not wait!

Monday
June 30th
Day Six

The fashion show and dance party were so much fun last night!!! Everyone got so into it! the creations that came out of the clothing that were given to the girls were amazing! it was so hard to choose what group won, but i think myself and the judging panel chose the right group. They had put so much work into there collection, and i would have worn some of it, it did a great job!
Today Jessica and jamie left to go back to So Cal. Sad to see them leave, we had such a great time!  I went up the hill, hung out with some campers hitting a rail and then had a pipe clinic go on with a few campers. They all did super well, and took a few steps forward, which was great to see and be apart of!
i came down from the hill and went to the lake again with the friends crew, it was very entertaining! So all in all great day!

Party on Sally Fitzgibbons!

Sall7_lisaWe are so proud of Sally Fizgibbons! At the age of 17 she is the youngest MALE or FEMALE surfer to ever qualify for the World Championship Tour! We had a little party for her at Roxy Headquarters in celebration of all her recent accomplishments. Lisa Anderson was there and interviewed Sally a little bit. Sally is looking forward to the U.S. Open of Surfing this weekend and also Roxy Pro Hawaii coming up later this year. After the flowers and confetti, Sally signed some posters and we all had sSally_party_lisaome cupcakes.

Save Trestles Update

We received word from our friends at Surfrider that the UC Irvine Bren Center hearing has been postponed. Apparently UC Irvine is concerned that their facilities will be overwhelmed by the turn out.

From Surfrider:

Big News!! Toll Road Hearing Possibly Postponed

We
were informed this weekend that UC Irvine’s Bren Center will NOT play
host to the Commerce Department’s public hearing on the 241 Toll Road
on July 25th. They feared that the turnout from supporters of San
Onofre State Beach and Trestles would overwhelm the facilities at UCI,
estimating that over 10,000 of you would show up.
Clearly
there is strong community opposition to this destructive highway
project, and those voices need to be heard. Unfortunately no other
venue has been identified, and the Commerce Department has made no
definitive decision on how or when to move forward with the hearing. We
will keep you informed as the situation develops, but for now we are assuming there will be NO Hearing on July 25th at the Bren Center.
In
the meantime, make sure that the Commerce Department knows that you
still want the opportunity to be heard. Send an email to Commerce
Secretary Carlos Gutierrez demanding that they reschedule the hearing
so that he can hear from the community on this issue. Copy and paste
the text below or write your own letter, and send it to gcos.comments@noaa.gov
Dear
Secretary Gutierrez, You previously promised to hold a hearing in
Southern California to gauge the public’s feelings on the proposed 241
Toll Road through San Onofre State Beach. The venue you chose for this
hearing felt that the expected crowd was beyond their abilities serve
properly. This intense public interest is even more reason for you to
follow through on your promise and reschedule the hearing to an
appropriate venue at a later date. As a member of the public I deserve
the opportunity to have my voice heard on this issue. Please do not
silence my voice on this important decision.
Sincerely, Your Name and Address
We will keep you informed about any changes. Thanks for your continued support to protect Trestles and San Onofre!!

Three Canadian Nominees

What a wicked time we had in Canada, eh. It was such a blast to be there for a few days and experience the true culture and say, eh, a lot. Oh and even brush up on some French while in Montreal. If you’re like me, you may not know but it’s all-French in Montreal, they stick to their roots. Bonjour!

We began our journey crossing the boarder in our, not so small whip making it necessary to take a little extra time, those Canadians aren’t messin around. Shortly after we found ourselves in central Toronto, in the heart of the city. It was a slight challenge to find parking, especially when you’re dealing with a vehicle of such caliber.  However we’ve learned there is no task to great for Carissa and I to handle. Carpe Diem, right?

After adjusting to our new surroundings we realized we should be celebrating Canada Day! Sweet! We weren’t able to be in the states for our independence day but we sure helped Canada turn 141 years young. We enjoyed watching the traditional fireworks, but I have to say, they don’t get down for their independence like we do. We get diggity, down, down for our independence, that’s a fact.

Our actual model search was held at the boat house in Toronto. It was interesting to have the model search conducted in a retail store rather than a huge mall. We enjoyed the ambiance. It was a little more intimate as well, holding the actual runway show inside the store. We also were accompanied the entire time with our Roxy Canada marketing crew!!! Really stellar set of ladies, who even brought along two kick ace female DJ’s who played all of the latest tunedge at all of our events!

We had a rad turn out as we usually do, and found three really incredible ladies. Nicole Frade, a fourteen year old from Ontario, Canada. Sarah Wayne, a nineteen year old, who traveled all the way from Montreal on an eight hour train ride, and our winner Maddy McGowin from Ontario.

Maddy is fifteen, and enjoys fashion. Maddy says, “It is a way to be unique and show your own personal style.” Maddy also loves accessories and shoes and most of all loves Roxy! Maddy had some impressive moves on the runway and spoke truly from her heart. Congrats Maddy, you were a true sweetheart.

Our second main event in Canada wasn’t a model search. It was held in Montreal to really encourage the Roxy Follow Your Heart tour. Our event was at the local Quiksilver store where we were greeted with open arms and even were lucky enough to be thrown an after party, “party your HEART out.”  We were back on the tee shirt press giving away some more cool tees. Our set up was in such a high traffic area I think we informed the whole city of the contest to win the $10k!!!  Which reminds me, we still want those videos ladies keep em’ rollin!

Shew, that was a lot. Hope your still reading, we’re in Florida now recovering from the twenty-two hour drive. We definitely plan on hitting up that little rodent who lives somewhere around here, when we do we’ll be sure to share some pics with all of you. See you in Cocoa beach in a few days!

TOROXY Artist: Michelle James

Mjcover_2

Art_showcase026 Michelle James (right) found inspiration for her record in a rather unexpected way. She was up in San Fransisco for the weekend and went to Berkeley for the afternoon.  While in Berkeley, she wandered into the basement of Rasputin Music and started going through boxes and boxes of records, collecting albums she found interesting, and ended up buying quite a few different ones…

Michelle’s artwork began with an entirely different album, a very ornate, Victorian one, but after starting she decided she didn’t like it and switched over to this one…Tom & Joyce Queixume – Revisited by Masters At Work

"I designed my album around these pink flowers. I had bought them for the album I started with, and realized they matched this one perfectly," said Michelle.

Sometime the unlikely matches are the ones we end up liking the most. Michelle glued bright, pink silk daisies onto the maiden’s cool flowing hair.

Katherine De La Fuente (left) is now the proud owner of this record. She bought it during the silent art auction at the Quiksilver Foundation Art Showcase. It now brightens up her desk. Although Michelle hasn’t listened to the record yet, Katherine plans on dusting off the old record player and giving it a whirl…

Start Off Summer Right with Roxy Surf Camps in Tofino, BC

Surfcamppostcard_2008_print
In my opinion, there is no better way to kick off summer than heading to beautiful Tofino, BC for a surf at anyone of their infamous surf spots.

Bruhwiler Surf School has been hosting Roxy Surf Camps for that last four summers. The all girls sessions are coached by Roxy surfer and Tofino local Catherine Bruhwiler. She grew up surfing the pacific coast of Vancouver Island and spends her winters surfing in Mexico.

At the camps, beginners can learn the basics of surfing; including surf etiquette and water safety, while intermediate surfers can improve their skills. Because the camps are all girls, it really makes the experience more intimate than a traditional co-ed camp. Joey Bruhwiler, Catherine’s sister in-law, makes the best chocolate chip cookies; if you are lucky – you might get some for a mid-surf snack. So good!

Canada_surf
The camp includes wetsuit, bootie and surfboard rental. Every girl goes home with great goodie bag too, not to mention new friendships and new surfing skills.

Each time I have been to Tofino and spent time with Bruhwiler Surf School, it has been nothing but the best times! Be sure to check them out this summer!

Roxy Surf Camp Dates:

July 12-13
July 26-27
August 2-3
August 16-17

Basecamp Roxy Cabin Gets a New Look!

Toronto_trip_2Not too long ago I found myself in the beautiful cottage country of Ontario, Canada – The Muskokas. There, I met up with the crew from Basecamp Wakeboard Camp to overhaul one of their cabins into the Roxy Cabin.

The first day began with Scott Duke, Basecamp founder and owner, picking Toronto_trip_5me up from the Toronto airport and heading to Ikea. We picked out a TON of bright accessories for the cabin. From Ikea we stopped by Scott’s neighborhood rec center for a serious game of dodge ball with his dodge ball team. Lets just say it was more than a fun "game" – there was some serious competition happening!

By the time we finished hashing
it out at dodge ball it was late and we had a two hour drive ahead of us to the camp and aToronto_trip_4 Ford Ranger full of cabin decor. We
headed straight to Basecamp located in the small Muskoka town of Minett, Ontario. The next two days was going to full of work, so it was time to get home and get some sleep.

Toronto_trip_6The following days saw us removing furniture, painting, cleaning and re-decorating the cabin. You can check out our before and after photos as well as the video on the entire renovation. The cabin hosts girls all summer that attend Basecamp. It also is the home of 10 girls during the Roxy All Girls Wakeboard Camp happening this week from July 13th to 18th. Take some time to check it out at the basecamp.ca

There is only 1 spot left out of the 18 for the Roxy week so if you feel like learning some new wakeboarding skills, getting tons of Roxy product and meeting new friends – come to camp! All info is available on the website. See you on the lake!Toronto_trip_3

4th of July Robot Parade

Robot Parade from Jared Foster on Vimeo

I love the idea of a robot parade. This should be much bigger.
