Hays, Kansas

passing through Hays, Kansas
Originally uploaded by Official Roxy Photos

On our way back to Colorado I couldn’t resist to stop at a good friends house in Hays, KS. This town is so much fun! The people who live their may not agree but the many visits I have had to this town in my lifetime have always been full of good memories, so I had to show a little Roxy love. I guarantee it was a big deal to have the Follow Your Heart tour bus in town. We were greeted by the VonLintel family with sooooooo much enthusiasm, we know how bummed they were that we weren’t staying for the night. We took them out to the buffalo, and had some local flavor pose in some pics for us. Ft. Hays state university is in town so we are sure we generated quite a buzz. Thanks for the hospitality as we passed through Hays, even though it wasn’t for the night!! Soon we will be home sweet home.

Much LOVE,
Samantha and Carissa

How to Crochet a Hat for Your Cat

Cat_hatCalling all cat lovers! Here’s a good project for ya. Learn how to crochet a hat for you cat.

How to Crochet a Cat Hat

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit
With these instructions, you can crochet a charming hat for your kitty. You’ll probably spend a lot more time making this hat than your cat will spend wearing it (unless your cat likes playing dress-up), but it’s still a fun, easy project for a beginning crocheter (and avid cat lover). To follow these steps, you’ll need to understand crochet patterns.

  Steps

  1. Cat_hat_finished Make a slip knot, and crochet 4 Ch (Chains); Slip stitch in first ch made.  This will make your ring that you’ll crochet into.
  2. Crochet 7 sc (single crochet) into the ring, use slip stitch to join sc into first sc made: 7 sc.
  3. Ch 2, work first hdc (half double crochet) in same stitch as the ch 2; work 2 hdc in each stitch around in circle; Slip stitch in first hdc made: 14 hdc.
  4. Ch 3, dc (double crochet) in same stitch as ch 3, 2 dc in each stitch around, slip stitch in first dc made: 28 dc.
  5. Ch 1, 8 sc in circle, ch 13, skip 4 stitches, re-attach using slip stitch. (This will create the first ear hole.) sc 10 more stitches in circle, ch 13, skip 4 stitches, re-attach using slip stitch, sc 3 more stitches, slip stitch in first sc made.  By now your hat should start to curve a little bit, which is what you want.
  6. Ch 1, 7 sc in circle. Note: You will be working into the ‘ear hole’ now, so you will be working in the space under it, but it’s basically like working a normal stitch. 16 sc in the ‘hole’, sc in in each stitch until you hit the next ear hole, 16 sc in hole, 3 sc, slip stitch in first sc made; cut yarn and tie off.  Weave in yarn ends with yarn needle.Alternate explanation:Ch 1, sc in next 7 sts.16 sc around ch of 13.Sc in each st up to next ch.16 sc around ch of 13.Sc in next 3 sts, slst in 1st sc made.

  In Other Words

  1. ch 4, slip stitch to first ch to form a ring.
  2. ch 1, 7sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (7sc)
  3. ch 2 ( this will be the first hdc) hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, join with sl st in top of ch 2. (14 hdc)
  4. ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in ea st around, Sl st in top of ch 3. (28 dc)
  5. ch1, sc in same st and in next 7 dc, ch 13, skip 4 dc, sl st in next dc, sc in next 10 dc, ch 13, sk 4, sl st in next dc, sc in next 3 dc, sl st in first sc.
  6. ch1, sc in same st and next 6 sts, 16 sc in ch 13 loop, sc in ea st around till next loop, 16 sc in ch 13 loop, sc in last 3 sts. Sl st in first sc. Fo weave in ends

  Tips

  •   You can make a chin strap but this is only for the most patient and mellow of cats, and definitely not recommended if there are children who’ll be trying to put this hat on the cat. Cut a 6 inch piece of yarn, and tie it onto the middle of the ear hole, try the hat onto your kitty to determine how long the chin strap should be, hold the spot and cut off the extra yarn, but leave an inch so you have room to tie it loosely. If the cat is clearly stressed, tying the hat on with a chin strap is not a good idea–it’s rather cruel!

  Things You’ll Need

  • Size H 5.00 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn
  • Yarn needle

University of Miami, Ohio Ladies Show their Schick Quattro For Women Totes

University of Miami, Ohio

We made it to our third destination! The University of Miami at Ohio.

It was a great campus full of friendly students who waved and greeted us with smiles. Students could be seen sitting outside sipping on refreshing beverages and cheering, “the Roxy girls” as we drove by.

There was a lot of energy on campus because it was senior week and the students only had one more week of classes left. It seemed that school was the furthest from their minds. We heard them all night as we tried to get our beauty sleep. Being a former college student myself I can relate to their enthusiasm. We found a convenient location to park Bessy and set up camp for the evening.

The next morning we set up the event with help from our Schick Quattro for Women representatives (THANK YOU) and before we knew it, it was show time…

The spot where we chose to set up was so beautiful. The Crab trees were in full bloom and we were placed right next to a beautiful water feature that would permeate mist our way every so often. The weather was a nice seventy five degrees and the sun was shinning. We were all smiles because as you know we love the sun but the weather called for windy and rainy all day.

The girls at the University of Miami of Ohio were so adorable. I think I heard someone say they have a nickname of J. Crew U. It seemed very fitting, the campus looked like it was made for a photo-shoot straight from the catalog.

Carissa and I are so eager to see all your video submissions, get them goin! Aside from a few hiccups in the morning it was a great day, that went quickly. Were back in the RV now on our way to AZ. But not without stopping in COLORADO for a little TLC from our friends and family. We can’t wait to see you!!!

Much Love,
Samantha and Carissa

Two Students from Old Dominion

It is official! The Roxy follow Your Heart Tour came in strong to our second stop. Old Dominion University in Virginia offered Samantha and me a whole new challenge. The weather gave a bit of trouble, all news channels called for thunder storms and flash flooding. Thankfully we had a back up plan. We set up our exhibit in the Webb Center building. Thanks to all of our volunteers who were so much help we had a great turn out! Samantha gets an award for making the most tee shirts complete with green pain for earth day! Cool fashion tip for all girls out there rain boots are very much in style when flooding is in the forecast. The Webb building is the center location for all of the food on campus we would like to say thanks to all of the “lunch ladies” for being so excited about the Schick Quattro for Woman and Roxy product as they all had no time to stand in line but we were able to get these giveaways to them before the end of the day. We are looking forward to seeing some video entry’s from the ladies in Virginia as all of the girls we talked to had exciting life stories. Don’t forget to post your entry as soon as possible for your chance to win!

Beach Clean Up at Roxy

Matt_earth_2At Roxy we’re taking green to heart! This afternoon, in honor of Earth Day, Quiksilver Foundation along with Surfrider Foundation, sponsored a beach clean up at Sunset Beach in Huntington, CA. Over 200 Roxy and Quiksilver employees volunteered to help clean up the beach. Armed with gloves and re-usable canvas bags we hiked the beach, picking up trash left behind. It was a beautiful, sunny day and by the end of the afternoon Sunset Beach was spotless.

While our beach clean up day won’t solve global pollution problems, at least it’s a step in the right direction.

Roxy is doing their part one step at a time by sponsoring beach cleanups and introducing environmentally friendly product in a new eco initiative called Greenprint. Greenprint products, like the Mantra sandal, are made with suitable materials and processes.  The Mantra is made with all eco friendly products—100% natural linen, non-petroleum eva midsole, a natural crepe outsole, natural vegetable leather upper, and water-based glue.

Roxy, Follow Your Heart, Samantha and Carissa, Pedro at South of the Border

Roxy, Follow Your Heart, Samantha and Carissa, Pedro at South of the Border
Originally uploaded by Official Roxy Photos

Hola! Not too much to report from the tour today. It’s Sunday afternoon and the “sun goddesses” are bummed because we finally have time to ourselves and are close to a beach. The problem, the weather is sixty-five degrees and rainy! Yuck!!! We hope the weather will cooperate with us by Tuesday for our second tour stop at Old Dominion University.

On our drive out yesterday we ventured upon a place called, South of the Border. It’s a huge tourist attraction right on the boarder of South and North Carolina. South of the Boarder looks like it belongs in the middle of Mexico somewhere, hence the name. It had anything and everything you could imagine, ice cream, roller coasters, antiques, Mexican food, an Africa shop, flamingos, a great white shark, tee shirts, souvenirs, RV parks and a giant sombrero. The reason for our interest for such a strange place such as this was because of the 120 billboards for nearly 200 miles along the highway. We were so intrigued by all the signs we had to stop. And when we saw the 200ft. high sombrero from the highway we couldn’t resist. When we pulled in we noticed the reality of Pedro’s South of the Boarder right away, we fell for the biggest tourist trap on I-95, by far the strangest place we have seen yet. After finding a place to park our home, which is always a tedious task, we got out and walked around for a bit. We decided the only reason for stopping was for the photo ops that were all around us. We captured some precious moments and then quickly realized we were in a neon Tijuana and we were ready to get on the road again. We arrived to Old Dominion University in the early evening and decided to call it a night. (Gracias to Pedro and the South of the Boarder creators for making our day a little more interesting) Keep your fingers crossed for good weather.

Samantha and Carissa
