Breathtaking View from the Top of Mammoth Mountain |
It is a beautiful day at the Roxy Chicken Jam. The sun is shining, the snow is powdery and fresh, and the superpipe qualifier is off to a great start. We snapped this picture from the top of the mountain. Almost looks like another world…

The Chicken Has Skills…Mad Snowboarding Skills |
Even though the qualifying events of the day were postponed it didn’t stop the Chicken from brushing up on his mad snowboarding skills for the mascot superpipe competition tomorrow.

The flying Chicken. Go Chicken Go!
Right after leaping superman through the air, the chicken decided to take a breather.
Good luck tomorrow Chicken!
Folks at Mammoth say…Weather should be better tomorrow but not significantly. "Less windy and snowy."
Saturday: Superpipe Qualifiers/Superpipe Finals
Sunday: Slopestyle Qualifiers/Slopestyle Finals
Welcome to the Roxy Chicken Jam! |
Good morning from Mammoth Mountain, California! Hope you brought your goggles! It’s windy and you’re gonna need them.
All the snowboarders are excited to get on the slopes and start the competition but mother nature isn’t quite cooperating yet. High winds have delayed the slopestyle qualifier. We snapped this picture looking up at the slopestyle qualifier course.

Hand Painted Roxy Surfboard |
Check out this beautiful board in our art director’s office. It will soon be on its way to Tahiti where Roxy models and team riders will ride it during the next photo shoot.
Shaped by Donald Takayama, (who also shapes all of Kassia’s boards) and hand painted by artist Greg Lamarche this board is truly one of a kind, an original piece of art. According to Roxy’s art director, they want to use relevant art on products that will actually be used in the photo shoot.
Greg Lamarche is one of Roxy’s studio artist. This New Yorker is a renown graffiti artist and uses collage and mixed media to create his works of art. For Roxy, Lamarche creates graphics and designs which are then incorporated into Roxy products and marketing materials. You can find some of Lamarches other designs on hang tags and Roxy wraps. Be on the lookout for the board in the next years photos from Tahiti.
Torah Bright and Kjersti Buaas Claim Top Titles at 2008 US Open! |
We had some great news this weekend at the 2008 Burton US Open! Two of our Roxy team riders, Torah Bright and Kjersti Buaas claimed top titles! Read this press release about the event:
ROXY SNOWBOARDERS CLAIM THE TOP TITLES AT 2008 US OPEN
TORAH BRIGHT TAKING HOME $100,000; THE LARGEST PRIZE PURSE IN SNOWBOARDING HISTORY FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. March 23, 2008 Roxy team riders Kjersti Buaas and Torah Bright secured two first place results in Women¹s Slopestyle and SuperPipe at the 2008 Burton US Open in Stratton Mountain, Vermont over the weekend!! The US Open finishes off the series of Open events hosted all over the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Japan, and Europe, and is the event where the Global Open Champion is announced.
The US Open started out early on a blustery morning for the slopestyle event. The athletes had to deal with heavy winds and hard pack snow conditions. Roxy’s Kjersti Buaas was the first to drop, and laid down a perfect run straight away. Styling out her frontside 3, combo-ing into a front seven, and finishing with her signature backside 180 Kjersti scored the highest run of the day for the women."I hadn’t planned to throw the frontside 7 in my run, but dropping into the jump I just went for it. It worked out perfectly!" an excited Buaas said after placing first.
Leading into the Women’s SuperPipe on Saturday morning, Torah Bright needed to finish no lower than in first place to secure her chance to again take the 2008 Burton Global Open Series Championship in order to edge out Jenny Jones (UK) and Kelly Clark (USA) both ahead of Bright and in close points contentions for the title. "Coming into the superpipe event, I wasn’t even sure if the overall championship was still a possibility. I knew I had to ride well in pipe, but didn’t realize it hinged on me taking first place overall for the series," spoke Bright later that day. Riding Torah’s signature banana-traction (BTX) Eminence snowboard, Torah was able to gracefully take on this challenge by posting a solid 83.7 score on her first run in the pipe, landing both her switch backside 7 and her front seven.
This score would hold as the rest of the field continued to struggle with less than ideal pipe conditions solidifying Torah’s win in the superpipe event and the overall Global Series Championship.
Bright will now turn her attention to securing another major title when she competes at next weekend’s series-ending Roxy Chicken Jam. Results at this event will decide the Ticket-To-Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Champion for 2008.

Walk for Water! |
WORLD WATER DAY ’08 IS MARCH 22ND!!
For many of us living in the US clean, safe, drinking water is something that we take for granted. When we’re thirsty we go to the tap, or pull that bottle out of the fridge, and take a drink. But for 20% of the world’s population this is not an option. Not having access to safe, clean drinking water is estimated to kill 4,000 children a day!! In 1992 the UN General Assembly designated March 22nd as "World Water Day" to draw international attention to the critical lack of clean, safe drinking water.
